As Clacton was UKIPer Douglas Carswell’s seat I suppose Farage (rhymes with fridge) thinks it’s a safe seat for his eighth attempt to be elected — that’s unless the gammons of this faded seaside resort have realised his Brexit really screwed thdm over.

Arrived at Holyhead Port in good time for the Dublin Ferry, with 43% left in the battery after 118 miles. I’ve got free charging booked on the ferry but this is a swift topup to 80% so the onboard charger can deliver me to Dublin with 100%. That’s the train station in the background, where you can literally step off a train from London, buy a ticket, and be taken by bus to the ferry.

Notice you don’t see Kemi Badenoch campaigning on Britain’s trade — her principal ministerial bailiwick. It’s understandable. As Business and Trade Secretary she and her predecessors since Brexit have failed to deliver the trade deals we were promised. Exporting is now harder than ever and small businesses have given up trying. So she’s made up a problem that doesn’t exist and, whilst she thinks she’s found a form of words to pretend she’s not painting trans folk as predators, that’s the effect.

New restrictions on puberty blockers - GOV.UK

How can a drug be withheld from one specific group of patients for reasons of ‘patient safety’ whilst continuing to provide it to those already receiving it and anyone who needs it prescribed for anything other than being trans? And how is that even managed on the ground? How are pharmacists supposed to deal with scripts? Government has gone full mask-off.

Those of us with functioning memories will recall that this allegation was in wide circulation six years ago in 2018 but couldn’t be stood up because the owners of The Apprentice wouldn’t release the tapes. Now a former producer’s NDA has expired …

This morning Britain is running on just 2.09 gigawatts of gas-fired electricity (6.9% of generation). We inch closer to the first time the country runs without fossil fuels for the first time. https://grid.iamkate.com

Given that Royal Mail and POL were cut from the same tree I find it highly unlikely that RM’s management culture is any different to POL’s. If this takeover deal is allowed to go through then I can’t imagine the new owner wasting any time in clearing out the whole show and wanting to just build new off the brand and premises. That would be accompanied by changes to services, regardless of the promises made to get the deal through. Doing anything less wouldn’t address the loss making.

The speed of Starmer’s policy reversals is dizzying. Nothing changes the fact he lied though.

Every time I see reports of extreme temperatures with people having to shelter in any way they can to avoid heatstroke I immediately think of all the mammals and birds with coats of hair or feathers that they can’t take off. The animals will be the first to go. Humans will find themselves in quiet wastelands devoid of surrounding life. But I appreciate it’s important to some people to not suffer the inconvenience of changing how they live in any way.

Pope apologises over reported homophobic slur

This is how it starts. Give it a couple of years and he’ll be doing the full JKR.

Some describe this phenomenon as a ‘trial balloon’. You push the envelope and see how it goes down. If you get away with the ‘senior moment’ or whatever then you’re OK to shift your personal Overton Window.

Dear oh dear, I’m not at all happy with the reboot of Rebus streaming on BBC. I’ve watched all six episodes and the character of Rebus himself is entirely changed — and not in a good way. Ian Rankin’s an exec producer so he doesn’t come away with clean hands. Vintage Rebus may not go by the book but he’s a decent cop who does real detecting. This version is hard to distinguish from the gangsters and doesn’t seem to have much actual detecting to do.

Good news: One of the hotels on my touring itinerary has EV chargers in their FREE basement car park. Always nice to plug in overnight.

Bad news: Said chargers are on yet another network that needs an app or RFID card, the app was never tested properly and the domain for Passwords to store my credentials bears no resemblance to the brand name of the network OR the web site which I had to find to get around a bug in the signup verification process.

If you’d like to watch a lot of Tories losing their seats here is the BBC’s election night coverage from 1997. It’s a good way of deciding how long you’d need to stay up to see the same this year, or whether your best bet is to go to bed and just get up early instead.

How the BBC covered the General Election 54 years ago in 1970. This was the first time they used an exit poll to predict the result near the start of the programme. The wrap up at the end contains some quite prescient predictions of how the Conservatives would get by with a fairly narrow majority — plus someone mentioned how Ted Heath was going to be a better figure than Harold Wilson to negotiate joining the Common Market.

Happy twentieth birthday to the Gender Recognition Act — once groundbreaking, now overdue for an update to catch-up with legislation that overtook it, but hopefully at least safe from the unhinged extreme right of the Conservative Party. Read how we forced Labour to pass it on 25th May 2004. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00PB84AUM
