Is it weird that I'm a designer and want to read this book by @claresudbery? Not to do development this way, but to understand it better.

In my imagination, trunk-based development feels WAY WAY WAY more compatible and friendly to continuous research and design.

I could work more confidently — in real-time — with developers.

Not weird at all! Makes a lot of sense.

Just listened to @claresudbery's talk on compassionate refactoring. It's sooo good! I've seen it gefore but it's one of the very, very few talks I come back to every now and then.

And I saw her at some days ago ranting about getting an app into the Apple app store.

The combination of being engaging, entertaining and delivering profound knowledge and insights is great!

Also empathy (and emotions) in tech is one of my hyperfocus topics 🥹

Would you like to know more about trunk-based development (TBD)? Do you use feature branches? Are you practising continuous integration?

I’ve been having fun the last few months, writing a report for @‌OReillyMedia@twitter.com on TBD and CI, which was published 5th June.

You can read it if you have an O'Reilly learning platform subscription, or if you sign up for a free trial: https://www.oreilly.com/library/view/what-is-trunk-based/9781098146658/

On Wednesdays in July (starting Wed 5th), I'll be delivering an online quality code bootcamp for @OReillyMedia, focusing on refactoring techniques: https://learning.oreilly.com/live-events/quality-code-boot-camp/0636920086483/…

Also, it's worth noting that this run of the course is during UK working hours: 1pm-5pm BST on each Wednesday.

If you're signed up for the learning platform, you can attend live or catch up via video. Come join me!

I want somebody to create an app called "What just went ping?"

There is at least one thing on my laptop that is configured to go "ping" but not give any other notification, so I have no idea what just happened. It drives me crazy!

Edit: It's more like "ba-ding!"

Arrived at hotel in San Jose at about 3:30am UK time, stayed overnight, then were driven through hills via waterfall into the jungle!

There’s this prank I used to play when I was a lowly admin assistant in an open plan office. I would dial the extension of the desk phone on a desk within my sight. Then as soon as they answered, I would redirect the call to another desk also in my sight. Then try not to laugh my socks off as the two recipients both said, "Hello? Who is it? What do you want? But you called me! No, you called me!" etc.

I know. I was a bad person. But it did make me laugh.

@claresudbery@mastodon.social avatar

Refactoring shouldn't be something that happens after the fact - it can be part of every day development. But before we write good code we have to write bad code, and that's OK. As with most creative endeavours, if you insist on making the first draft perfect you'll never get anything done.

Every hashtag on every post on every platform should ALWAYS be pascal case (a.k.a. camel case). I made this to illustrate how screenreaders read hashtags depending on whether they are lowercase or pascal case.

It’s a small thing that all of us can do to build a more inclusive, accessible internet for all. Please take the time to use pascal case.

This is super interesting, thank you! But I find that your graphic doesn't help me as much as I think you hoped it would. Given that a screen reader will be outputting audio only, how does "ucksdesign" sound different from "ux design"? It seems to me that they would both sound the same? Unless the latter is read out as "U X design" rather than "ux design"?

claresudbery,
@claresudbery@mastodon.social avatar

@markwyner @onsman

Sorry, I'm not being deliberately awkward but I still don't understand?

I understand that "ucks" should be pronounced like "ducks" without the D, but that's not the boot that confused me. It seems to me that "ux" would also sound the same? As in, it would sound like "ucks"? So my question is, do you intend "ux" to be pronounced as "U X", ie two individual letters pronounced separately?

claresudbery,
@claresudbery@mastodon.social avatar

@markwyner @onsman

(I would find the graphic easier to understand if you wrote "U X design" or at the very least, "u x design", and the same for "U I".)

claresudbery,
@claresudbery@mastodon.social avatar

@markwyner @onsman

Again, apologies, I'm not trying to be awkward, just checking for clarity.

claresudbery,
@claresudbery@mastodon.social avatar

@markwyner @onsman

Oh dear, I am doing a really bad job of explaining myself. That also does not answer my question.

The point of your graphic is to explain to people that they should change the way they format their hashtags, because otherwise they will be read out by screen readers in a way that is unhelpful to people who have sight impairments.
