I have been programming since I was 12 (born in '73 #genx), currently enjoy coding in #Rust. I use Linux every day; I prefer open to closed. I try to live and let live when it comes to people's tech choices.

I work in tech but am learning how better to separate that from my passion for programming.

I used to podcast, I plan to again soon.

I practice #zazen, #qigong, and #taichi every day.

In his latest, I think @pluralistic put his finger right on the problem with adopting LLM's to write code.

https://pluralistic.net/2024/04/01/human-in-the-loop/

Even if LLM's were far better at generating code, he's right that this is totally a reverse centaur situation. The nature of the technology means all generated code has to be reviewed. Code review is a net drag, even in the best of circumstances, meaning LLM's in the long run won't help developers but rather place even more demands on our overloaded faculties.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

Getting up was slightly easier so clearly starting to adjust to the time change.

Enjoying tea on the patio and waiting for the fire to catch.

I have two job interviews today then beer and pizza tonight with my son at a nearby farm brewery.

I am reading "Shape Up" in the sunshine out on our deck.

One editorial choice I noticed and like, preferring simple words and clear explanation over jargon. The author could have used the term, opportunity cost, but didn't. They pithily described it instead, in about six words.

I think that choice for plain language is making the book faster to read and easier to internalize.

I could complain about the lack of a BYOD policy at my new $dayjob but the brand new, well stocked Macbook they sent is a more than decent compromise.

All of my coding tools are terminal based. The rest is web based. My only real irritation is the difference in key bindings. Time to research options to either force macOS to behave or map something on my Launch to the command and option keys.

I am not going to die on the Linux hill for a $dayjob anymore. Life is too short.

Today is day here. I order one or two sets roughly monthly, either to expand my brick library or to add to my modest display.

@punkrockvader's search for a goat made me aware of and interested in the minifig series. I've added one or two to each of my last few orders. Now I also want to get the goat. :totoro:

I got my first duplicates today. I already had the e-sports gamer, now I have three. I am totally fine with that, they are an awesome minifig for that hair alone.

The second part of Rebel Moon...not so much. At best indulgent, at worst a slog. This man needs an editor willing to tell him no.

The sun has brighten considerably since I woke up. The temperature has warmed a little (10C/51F) so should be pleasant enough for some gardening. I think I'll start by mowing the back yard. The father-son pair who've been maintaining most lawns in our neighborhood have yet to show up for the new season. I have a simple, unpowered reel mower so also a good way to burn off post-interview nerves.

Good morning and TZAG, friends. :totoro:

I am feeling much less stress now that I've accepted an offer from a new $dayjob. I enjoyed some modest celebration yesterday, mostly by way of some delicious delivery meals but also by simply relaxing.

I have a little over two weeks until I start $dayjob2024. I've got the usual paperwork to get through but otherwise will be glad to resume the work I was doing to heal my burnout.

The weather is drizzly and gray so indoor activities it is.

Our son stopped by for dinner. He arrived early so we decided to play some Zombie Dice. Despite claims to the contrary, round one was a blow out.

The processing I've been doing over the past week has been super helpful. I have finally been able to connect several dots over the last few years. I am hopeful I can continue to make better choices in my career and thrive regardless of whatever happens at any future $dayjob.

I have a ton of specific insights and a way to help me remember them better, which might lead to being better able to use any of them in the heat of the moment.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

I am enjoying a slow, quiet morning . I am noodling on my laptop, listening to the rain and the birds out back at the feeder.

I think I will prioritize recharging today. I do have an idea for a simpler essay that I think I can distill from the one I've been working on for a few weeks. We'll see if I can find the appetite for some writing later.

I finished mowing the lawn despite the persistent drizzle. My cursory research suggested most of the problems with mowing a wet lawn are mitigated by my use of an unpowered, reel mower. I set the blades at their highest. I only wanted to stop the tallest stalks from going to seed.

The forecast is for rain most of the week. Our lawn folks won't come until it has dried out. My rough cut should be good enough until then.

I am remembering something I understood intuitively when I was very young.

I feel better when I move.

It isn't about sport or exercise, though they can work. Perhaps hard to explain other than by contrast.

I was super passive yesterday, didn't even do any qígōng or táijì. I felt low all day and even into this morning.

I just came in from an hour of yard work and now feel massively better despite it being a chore I have disliked so much I spent years avoiding it.

I am getting a little more comfortable with the pace of my new $dayjob. I feel like I have as much time to think about the problem as I do planning for and building the solution.

For the final eight months of $dayjob2021 I barely had time to implement what was needed let alone fully consider my approach. I got lucky as often as not and developed a knack for thinking very quickly in code.

I just spotted The Fifth Element on Hulu. A couple of weeks ago it wasn't available on anything we have. That was another Saturday where we simply wanted some pretty, dumb, and fun.

I guess my afternoon is sorted. Except maybe for a snack.

The code reading I've been doing these past couple of weeks would have broken earlier versions of me, even as recently as a few months ago.

The code is far from the worst I've seen. About what you'd expect of even its brief history. Past me would have struggled, questioning that history mercilessly.

I've achieved enough equanimity that my mind now ruminates more on my actual job: what to do with my findings. My challenge right now is holding to beginner's mind, to keep options open.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

Yesterday was a lot for me as an introvert. I am doing surprisingly well given how disrupted my sleep was last night.

The sun is out and although I have a lot on my plate for $dayjob, I hope to get several breaks to enjoy it.

I want to get out for my weekly visit to my fave local taproom but need to figure out if I have the reserves for more socialization.
