I have been programming since I was 12 (born in '73 #genx), currently enjoy coding in #Rust. I use Linux every day; I prefer open to closed. I try to live and let live when it comes to people's tech choices.

I work in tech but am learning how better to separate that from my passion for programming.

I used to podcast, I plan to again soon.

I practice #zazen, #qigong, and #taichi every day.

Another day where my growing equanimity really helped me. This stage of my practice is still young, I will get to layering in benevolence soon enough. Judging from the reactions to my facial expression throughout the day, hopefully sooner rather than later.

I promise this experience is actually less distressing for me than it appears, either in my posts or in person. The feelings are the same as they've always been, how I experience and respond to them is changing.

One very clear positive is that more of the teachings I've been studying are now making more sense. This is the way of things. I've learned that a key to is direct experience. Even if what that means is a bit of a puzzle itself.

This is what my direct experience is like. I am not a poet, please forgive me if how I talk about it is a bit raw.

Adding to my generalized morning worries is the latest signs of just how badly my industry is degrading. No one is unaffected. Feeling crushed between the "Just switch to Linux" sentiment I'm seeing and the entirely understandable backlash of "Don't tell me just to use Linux". Now with search engines too.

I have no other answers to offer. There are no simple answers left. The options seem to be accept hot garbage or figure it out entirely for yourself. Neither are great.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

I woke with anxiety #today. I often do and am learning how better to deal with it. I have to lead a meeting with my new team later this morning. Could be simple social anxiety but may be connected with other concerns about being a new employee.

I've tapped into my equanimity and deployed some tools. I am good, if not happy or excited. At all events, I will feel better after the meeting. And hopefully have another experience to help tame that specific anxiety.

cmdln,
@cmdln@thecommandline.social avatar

To clarify, thanks to my deepening meditation and reflection practices, anxiety feels different to me now. Hard to explain but maybe less immediate or urgent expresses some of it. Still not pleasant but thanks to my stronger equanimity, I am able to simply be with it, examine it, and that is usually enough to start letting it go. #zen #zazen #buddhism

I have a coworker whose temperament I realized kind of reminds me of Ron Swanson in early seasons of Parks & Rec. I was struggling to be patient and this image helped me. I thought about Swanson's arc and imagined maybe this person may learn to soften a little. I almost laughed out loud when I realized I could also easily see myself as Ron Dunn, the wonderful foil played by the fantastic Sam Elliott.

I am working on my third experiment with these new to us eati meati brand mycelium cutlets. We don't cook with oil so getting them cooked and sliced without shredding took some figuring out.

I dredged and rubbed the strips with my spice mix and enough water to make a paste. I'm air frying the strips now and very optimistic based on the aroma alone.

cmdln,
@cmdln@thecommandline.social avatar

I am pleased with the results. The strips crisped up and the spice flavor comes through great.

I see you, Mara.

I heard a great interview with a dharma teacher who really identified and clarified the discomfort I have been feeling as my meditation practice has deepened.

https://www.tenpercent.com/tph/podcast-episode/vinny-ferraro

That unease has lessened or maybe I've gotten used to it. The interview also validated how I've been choosing to explore the unease and use new to me tools to work with it. #zen #buddhism

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

Yesterday was a lot for me as an introvert. I am doing surprisingly well #today given how disrupted my sleep was last night.

The sun is out and although I have a lot on my plate for $dayjob, I hope to get several breaks to enjoy it.

I want to get out for my weekly visit to my fave local taproom but need to figure out if I have the reserves for more socialization.

cmdln,
@cmdln@thecommandline.social avatar

I did not have the reserves to visit my favorite local taproom #today. I used the time well, to craft more guidance for my coworkers as we are seeking traction on our first project together.

I say spent well because I resisted pressuring myself. I realized belatedly my plan for the day would take longer than I had. I used some positive re-appraisal to figure out what I could accomplish that would still help with in a team meeting tomorrow.

cmdln,
@cmdln@thecommandline.social avatar

The extra time is because I usually end work early to increase the time I get to spend with the owner who usually heads home only a half hour after the end of my work day. And it takes me half an hour to drive there.

I am halfway through a day full of meetings, most of them 1:1s I scheduled to get to know my new team.

The conversations have been great and I am learning a lot.

I am catching what sun I can, a lot because the sun is so bright, before I get on with the remaining half of my agenda.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

The sun is out strong #today. I've already had a run by the creek. I even managed to improve my average pace by 15s/km. I am also proud that this is the first run in recent memory where I didn't drop to a walk even once.

I have a long day of conversations ahead, meetings and 1:1's for the $dayjob. My introvert battery is relatively charged. I will do my best to make it through without getting too ground down.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

I was hoping #today might start with some sun but woke to more gray. If the forecast is accurate, we should get some sun midday and all day tomorrow.

I missed my window for a run this morning. I hurt my foot last night, banged it into Ziggy's crate in the dark, so not sure I wanted to run on it anyway. I will still exercise, my non-running regimen. I do better when I get more exercise in each week rather than let it slide too many days.

cmdln,
@cmdln@thecommandline.social avatar

The sun did come out for quite a bit of and I did manage to enjoy some of it.

I found a bit of ease with my equanimity today as well.

I assembled our new rake and broke it in cleaning up all the wet, dead, grass clippings in the backyard.

Our old rake was long lost before finishing renovations last Summer.

The fescue is still too long in spots but hopefully won't keep dying back or encouraging mushrooms. I'm hoping 2-3 days of dry weather will help more now that everything is cleaned up.

cmdln,
@cmdln@thecommandline.social avatar

I also broke the new rake. I hatea Amazon, it is impossible to figure out how cheap and shitty most things listed are until they arrive.

The handle is a few segments fitted together with threads. One of the segments looks like when the threads were formed, it actually weakens or pierced the metal.

Thankfully the rake was a bit long anyway. I removed and discarded the broken segment. The shorter handle is actually easier to use now.

Good morning and TZAG, friends.

The gray weather has returned #today but the forecast for the week has shifted. We may get a few showers this afternoon but looks like the first half of the week may be clear.

I've assembled a new rake and plan to spend at least part of my morning working to get two trimmings worth of leftover, wet grass clippings bagged up so we'll be less reliant on the dry weather in case the weather shifts again.
