It's now possible to follow Threads accounts from Mastodon and see what they are posting. You can reply, but the replies aren't being imported into Threads, yet. So, I followed myself to see if it works. It does with a delay between when I post on Threads and when I see it here.

colomon,
@colomon@wandering.shop avatar

@bryanhansel How do we set that up?

@bryanhansel Do you have to have Threads account for the bridge, then?

iPadOS with a mouse feels like trying to play the harp with welding gloves on

Apple, you are SO CLOSE just stop trying to make fetch happen with Stage Manager. Just let me use this ridiculously powerful computer like a computer.

(this is one of a couple “family docking stations” that we share at our house for when the kids want to use a bigger display or have good audio for editing, etc. I’ll often leave my computer at one and drop my iPad in this one since it’s a sit/stand desk)

colomon,

@ethanschoonover I've got a docking station set up for my MBP, but have no idea how you're doing it with an iPad? Can you explain a bit more of this setup?

I've been considering moving off Gandi to a different domain registrar. Not anything specific but they stopped offering some services recently and it made me consider alternatives.

Two days ago Gandi sent out a shady looking alert email asking for all customers to change credit card info.

Yesterday to today they have an alert on a status page that credit cards cannot be added due to an outage.

None of this is on their billing information page OR main account dashboard when you login.

SO BAD.

colomon,
@colomon@wandering.shop avatar

@ethanschoonover Interesting. I assumed the change credit card info e-mail was actually someone else's hacking attempt. I've regularly gotten fake e-mails alleging to be from Gandi for years -- usually the tell is that they are in French, and Google actually automatically sends them to the spam folder.

Just reading your latest post @gruber over on Daring Fireball about loose parts on Alaska united boeing https://daringfireball.net/linked/2024/01/09/alaska-united-boeing-loose-parts

Reminds me of a story about wrong size bolts nearly causing disaster https://www.newscientist.com/article/mg13418180-300-wrong-bolts-sent-pilot-into-the-blue/

I wonder if might be a similar problem?

- do any of you use an external dvd or blu-ray player for your computers? Any good options out there?

colomon,
@colomon@wandering.shop avatar

@PlaneSailingGames I do have an external DVD drive, but it officially IS NOT a good option. Very interested to hear recommendations for ones that don't suck.

colomon,
@colomon@wandering.shop avatar

@PlaneSailingGames "Rodzon External CD Drive Type C USB 3.0 Portable CD DVD +/-RW Drive Slim DVD/CD ROM Rewriter Burner Writer” It's build is janky, and it has a surprisingly high rate of failing to read CDs.

Also guess I should put in a bad word for Apple's USB SuperDrive -- I had one that worked well for like half a decade, but it turns out they don't properly implement the USB interface (???), and I haven't been able to get one working with my (Mac!) setup for years now.

I’ve always wondered about Civil Defense in the Kaiju Universe. I mean, surely after the initial 1954 Godzilla attack on Tokyo, monster attacks would have become a top priority national security issue around the world (and Lord only knows the domino effect on Cold War politics). I could totally imagine Bert the Turtle giving lectures on avoiding Gamera by ducking and covering!

colomon,

@mc_frontalot If it were me, I'd hit up https://thesession.org (edited: fixed URL, got rid of previous note about it being down) to figure figure out what ITM sessions and events where happening over those two days, then plan on hitting up the Irish Traditional Music Archive for any spare time step one left.

Of course, if you were interested in that sort of thing you probably already knew to do it?

My 5 yo child has generalized the term "file" to analog games as well. So when we play DnD he asks to play either his file (Chop Downhouse) or my file (I think my character got lost on the moon? His DMing style is... confusing).

Anyway it's very cute

@benrobbins @chobbs My 15yo proposed adding a save point to our Sundered Isles (Ironsworn Starforged pirate spinoff in alpha) game earlier this week.

(Edited to add) Just realized my parenthetical might be unclear. Sundered Isles is Shawn Tomkin's latest Ironsworn spinoff, 15yo and I are just playing the game in its unfinished state.

Me: Command-T

Every App on macOS other than Apple Music: "RIGHT BOSS, NEW TAB COMING UP"

Apple Music: "Here's a music visualizer from 1990 that I just found in my pocket"

A pulsing sequences of particles and orbs floating around on a a blank field of greens and blues, presumably pulsing to some music track

colomon,
@colomon@wandering.shop avatar

@ethanschoonover I dunno what it is about the design, but while I usually like having keyboard commands available for apps, keyboard commands for Apple Music have caused me nothing but trouble. I very frequently leave the focus on the app (because I paused or unpaused what I'm listening to with the mouse) and so end up accidentally typing there when I think I'm in a different window. Somehow this seems to often result in the music being slower and/or pitch-shifted down, which I never want… 1/2

This is a find-your-people post for TTRPG folk.

Please respond by saying what sorts of TTRPG things you're pretty likely to either talk about or respond to if you see them.

This can be a list of games (D&D! Tribe 8! Fate!) or categories (the weirdest of indie stuff! NSR! Anything PBtA!), topics (Worldbuilding! Publishing!), stuff you're making, meta-commentary (The State Of The Industry), and so on.

Then maybe share, and if the replies are building up, check them for new people.

Anyone have a mac/ipad/iOS recipe management app that they like? My "dump a PDF into Notes" has worked well but I'm looking for something with a little more structure, more features, iCloud sync, and Family Sharing.
