After WWDC 2022 Federico Viticci was very loud in his advocacy that Stage Manager should be optimized to run on older iPads many of which had only 4 to 6GB of memory.

In his recent post "Why iPadOS Still Doesn’t Get the Basics Right" he’s complaining that Stage Manager should do more because new iPads are more powerful.

Which is it? Build features that take advantage of more powerful iPads or restrict features to accommodate older hardware?

Reading some iPad Pro reviews. What feels puzzling, troubling, and just off base is that the the complaints about iPadOS could have been written before and most were.

So I’m not getting the love/hate with the device/software. I don’t think anyone expected iPadOS to offer anything new at this point. If they did they were wrong.

If they’re hoping they’ll push Apple further at WWDC, that ship has sailed whatever it contains, so I don’t get the push.

Ok weird situation: got an iOS system alert on my devices yesterday that ‘a new iPad has been added to your Apple ID and has access to iMessage.’ But I haven’t added a new device.

Checked my account, there is no new iPad I don’t recognize there. But I did order a new M4 Pro. Could Apple have somehow preemptively added it to my account?

UPDATE: Apprently this is a bug going around triggered by updating a device with iOS 17.5, which I did do.

On M4 iPad Pro "bend protection":

"Apple's senior VP John Ternus reveals that Apple has added a new protective "cowling" over main logic board...not only helps with heat dissipation, but also "effectively creates a central rib that runs through the whole thing and tremendously improves the stiffness"

From M4 iPad Pro review by @joannastern

"iPadOS is far less capable than macOS"

"It's like having the power of a Ferrari, but driving it on a golf course"

Read the words, watch the video. My 2 cents, I wish I could run macOS on that M4 Apple Silicon, or get an iPadOS redo.

I saw this article on Hacker News, and I've never felt more seen in my entire life. I gave away my iPad this year and I forgot until I saw this article - I always end up using my MacBook or my Thinkpad to get stuff done as the iPad is just utterly restricted at the software layer.

: "Smartphones and tablets were invented to enhance our lived experience, to make it easier to leave the house and go to the beach and meet up with friends — just a good camera-computer combo that fits in your pocket.

Theoretically, our phones and tablets will become even more useful with AI, serving as virtual assistants that can do all the boring stuff we don’t want to, like summarizing all your new emails and filtering out junk. There’s a world in the not too distant future, according to AI proponents, where you can simply tell Siri or Google “order my usual breakfast from the coffee shop near the office, I’ll be there in 10 minutes to pick it up,” and the bot will do just that.

We’re not there yet, however. And so far, the consumer applications for AI are simultaneously underwhelming and dystopian.

Distorted images may be harmless social media fodder, until they become propaganda spread by bad actors."

CSS nesting is a bit tricky when it comes to progressive enhancement.

I’ve been bitten twice now by shipping some nested css and finding my layouts busted on devices that aren’t that old.

So I’m still doing a lot of non-nested CSS for personal projects. Maybe a few more years.

@jimniels same here! I've replaced the #sass syntax with nested #CSS and while it worked on all major browsers (latest version), everything was broken when using an older #ipad

: "On the one hand it is really wild to me that Apple would miscalculate on something so drastically — Apple prides itself on its marketing, which is as crucial to the company as any of its technologies — but on the other, I’m thankful. The ad has clarified some things: amid (yet another) week in which human writers and artists were watching their work degraded into content fodder, Apple came along and handed us a perfect visual metaphor for one of our most potent fears about big tech right now — namely, that it is crushing the arts and transmuting them into dull consumer products. And, I might add, they are so content with what they are doing, that they are more than happy to broadcast that intent explicitly via advertising — signed off on by the highest echelons of Apple, and Tim Cook himself tweeting it out — with an exclamation point in the title. “Crush!” indeed."

My last post on was a critique but now for some praise: It has truly transformed the way my daughter takes notes and studies (below: IB Bio exams). She can search her handwritten notes, make flash cards, add images. They never get lost and they are all always with her (using Goodnotes).

: "All that stuff — the paint, the piano, the trumpet, the arcade machine, the illustrator's table — do you feel any hostility toward it? Do you want to see it destroyed and symbolically turned into an Apple device? Does it give you any satisfaction to see record players annihilated, and cameras all squished, and crumbly, and exploding?

By signing up you agree to our Terms of Use and Privacy Policy.
And to switch things around a bit, take a look at your nearest Apple device and think about the last time you fantasized about that thing getting crushed. Was it yesterday? Maybe it was five minutes ago. In any case, you probably like it less than you like, say, your guitar.

Almost exactly 40 years ago, Apple released its most famous ad, "1984," in which a monochrome society of shambling drones is under the spell of some kind of computerized dictator. The prisoners of this terrible society are then liberated from their monotony by a hammer-throwing savior representing the Macintosh computer, and a glorious, colorful future is unleashed.

Fast forward 40 years, and Apple is the most valuable company in the world, releasing a commercial in which symbols of creativity, color, joy, human passion, and playfulness are piled into the center of a grey concrete void, and crushed by an industrial machine until they become a little Apple-branded rectangle.

The message is not playing well."

looking at these m series ipads (at the very least) ... i cant help but wonder, whats about the community there? this is os (in the analytics still iphone os i noticed xD). this means at some point (the soldered wear parts aside), they wont receive major updates and new apps wont install anymore. is there something starting to get in motion? these things are not only powerful, but can become quite expensive as well...
