I really like film photography, though I ignore all conventional photography wisdom. I also bake, because people can't say no to you if you have cookies.

I get paid to break things on computers a lot, and have a background in information systems, political science and accessibility.

mastodon admins: i'd like to make a small mod to my instance, and i don't know where to start.

back in the early 2010's there was movement towards stripping away www. from the url for web servers. it appears that mastodon does the same for the display of urls (it leaves the url intact within the link tag).

for reasons of luddite iconoclasm, i require www.dialup.cafe/~vga256 to always show the www prefix. does anyone know which ruby script I might modify, so it stops stripping the www?

update: found by @vyr
in app/lib/text_formatter.rb

@vga256 I think you can do it by setting the Local and Web domain in the server settings:

@kkarhan @bytephantom What year is it that we still say that emacs is bloatware??

ksaj, to linux

Hey folks who are using Wayland now (instead of X): Does ssh -X still do its thing, or is there another process I would have to do for running graphical apps across the network?

This will inform whether I update my systems to Wayland now, or some time next year instead.

crb,

@ksaj you can still use ssh -x for xorg applications, but if you want to forward Wayland ones you can use waypipe https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mstoeckl/waypipe

To any or shooters: What does your workflow look like?

I stopped shooting film 8 years ago, mostly due to workflow problems. Finding the time to do high-res scans and deal with the physical film just took away all the joy. I spent more time on admin than shooting!

Are you digitally archiving your film? Do you select the low-res scans from the film developer? Develop your own film? Do you keep the film once digitized? Do you archive it?

All input welcome!

@Topslakr Hi!

I predominately shoot film, though I am slowly moving to digital due to film prices. :(

I find the whole process part of film - from shooting, developing, scanning -> to editing.

I have an Epson v550 and I do a max scan in Silverfast - which isn't that highres, so it takes maybe a half hour for a roll of film - so at max a couple times a month. Then I have it backed up and edited as I want.

Though if I had $ I'd just dark room everything!

    @darth are you booting efi or mbr? Are your hard drives already formatted for Linux file systems? I've found that unless you reformat them (through Linux) to ntfs/fat, Windows has issues seeing them.

    Sure. A Sony is expensive if you just do BASIC phone things with it, but that really isn't the point of an XPERIA is it?
    Taking a quick tour through the External Monitor mode, it's crazy to think how little we're really tapping into the amazing compute power of our phones...

    @crb@mstdn.ca avatar

    @SomeGadgetGuy It is such a shame that Sony stopped selling XPERIA phones in Canada.

    As much as I would love to augment my Sony Alpha cameras with them as a secondary display, and use all their functionality - importing a phone is just not worth it.

    But I am so jealous of everyone who gets to combine the two. Its so fancy!!

    @SomeGadgetGuy After seeing how Xperia is integrating, it really is disappointing to see all the other manufacturers only integrate with superficial products like watches and earbuds.

    We should have a cohesive eco-system. At least Samsung is trying to turn their higher end stuff into computers too with DeX.

    But, for photography, all phones should be external monitors, it just makes sense - like my Pixel (disappointing as it is), has a fantastic screen!

    @ppatel It is three birds (I am not sure what type, cute though), they're spotted and a various dark blue-green colour on top of a wave-like metal roof on some sort of home-made red wooden box (probably bird cages).

    @crb@mstdn.ca avatar

    @rbphotographic I'm starting to see them come out of the wood work, its so nice!

    I've purposefully stayed away from LF, and limited my MF GAS so much. I try to stick to less known manufacturers to keep cost down. But, I can't argue that your setups must get some amazing results!
