When was the last time you typed ATDT?

cs,
@cs@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@mrcool We used to do it for fun, just to hear it. There were also people around who had telephone accounts that would save like $2/month by not having touch tone. Touch tone still worked on their phone service, but if the telephone company caught you using it more than a few times a month they'd charge you the fee! 😆 Any way to make a buck. As if the touch tone was costing the phone company money to support. 🙄

@mrcool We had touch tone very early on, and it was widespread, but the local phone companies charged to use it. Even after touch tone was pretty much ubiquitous in the 1980s, you would often find the fee on our bill (very small) and if you were pinching pennies, you could tell the to take it off and use pulse. Eventually, they dropped the fee, probably in the early 90s.

Narrow win for file transmission protocols.

I kinda expected a few write-in candidates.

I should point out that I had a licensed copy of #Zmodem from #OmenTechnologies on 5.25 floppy that floated around for years. I think I eventually gave it to someone on #SDF

Recognizing that while kermit also was a protocol, it did a lot of other things as well.

Me (silently): No, their last names come last. Their surnames come first.

Texas Capital web site appears to be down until Monday, June 3. Does it always close for the weekend? Is it closed for maintenance? Just trying to look up some historical minutes.

Ah, title element says "Under Maintenance."

requires passwords to be between 12 and 16 characters. If you type a 17-character password, it silently drops the last character and sets your password to the first 16 characters to the password you've typed. If you miss that 16 is the MAX, later, it doesn't tell you that your password is limited to 16 characters, so you type in 17 to gain access, it doesn't truncate at that point, just refuses entry saying your password is incorrect. 🙄

Is there any outside commentary praising AI in search engines? Where is the positive feedback that is convincing big tech this is what users (or even advertisers) desired.

cs,
@cs@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@kashifshah I didn't see any really addressing search engines except the first I ran into was this: https://www.adweek.com/media/google-ai-search-engine-misinformation-glue-pizza-eat-rocks/
😆

I've seen lots of pundits saying it will solve this problem or that problem or whatevs, but (I think?) the argument has been that using AI keeps people on the search engine page because it answers the question people have rather than sending them to another site and this is good for advertisers. So far, if people lose trust in the search engines, I'm not sure...1/2

cs,
@cs@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@kashifshah ...what will replace them. We already have a problem with the vast majority of search results being crap either generated by regular SEO algorithms or AI, so much so that people have to tiptoe through the bad results to find the good stuff. Something that used to be relatively rare. 2/2

Are electric cars better for the environment than fuel-powered cars? Here's the verdict - ABC News
(At least for the Australian power market)
I’d also like to see these types of charts include battery replacement. And this doesn’t address the increasing issue of carbon use due to city structure caused by the reliance on cars as opposed to building and zoning for local & mass transit.
