In case you missed it, the Canadian Federal Government is taking input on its 2035 emission targets. The input closes on 28 March 2024.

@johnefrancis Yeah, that's a problem. But we have to get to net zero before we start trying to remove CO₂ from the atmosphere.

@ap236 @ontariogreens @onpoli Automatic renewal is probably not a bad idea. It won't be renewed if there is no insurance or if there are any fines or tickets outstanding.

We might lose out on data such as distance driven, and there's a risk that purchased used vehicles won't get registered.

dan613,
@dan613@mstdn.ca avatar

@Auxonic @ap236 @ontariogreens @onpoli We can get remote gas metres attached to the axles. I'm pretty sure some computer in your car already has distance, though, so it's just a matter of reading that securely and cheaply.

A woman posted to the intactivist group that she couldn't find posts using the keyword episiotomy and that disappointed her. Where are the people discussing adult women being cut without their consent?

I pointed out that despite her claim to have been monitoring the group for posts about women, she missed my sharing (and subsequent discussion) of an article that addressed episiotomy as well as non consensual private genital exams which mostly affect women.

I was called a misogynist for that!

dan613,
@dan613@mstdn.ca avatar

@ttpphd One downside of a federated system is that if you are on a small instance, you might not see all posts on a topic if nobody on your instance follows the people making those posts. One workaround is to go to the site of a large instance and search there.

Edit: only one post on mastodon.social. They might have to go to a server that has more people interested in the topic.

What happens if you leave some 1980s glasses with a plastic frame in a box for 40 years?

Sometimes the plastic just shatters into zillions of fragments! We found a few other plastic items (like a vinyl purse) that had turned stiff, or even some that liquified leaving sticky residue on everything nearby.

I found a decent replacement for Apple Books, but unfortunately Apple uses DRM/encryption to store the XHTML in ePubs, and Kindle uses a new-fangled book format. It’s like they want you to buy books but never read them.

dan613,
@dan613@mstdn.ca avatar

@SergKoren They have to give you the encryption key so that you can actually read the books, so theoretically the encryption can be stripped. It might take some clever programming to access the key, though. I think Calibré can strip it from Kindle.

A few years later, the impact I and others wrote about Apple’s ATT has come to pass. The biggest losers have been niche mobile games and D2C e-commerce players who’ve lost targeted advertising.

Big players like Google & Meta have adapted while smaller players like Snap & Twitter haven’t. As with almost all regulation, the incumbents have the resources to adapt while its the smaller players who drown in the sea of red tape and constraints.

@carnage4life For people like me who had to look it up, ATT is Apple's App Tracking Transparency feature, where you can opt out of tracking. Here's a good article on how developers are working to bypass it: https://techcrunch.com/2022/04/08/apple-att-impact-study/

Atlantic Ocean is headed for a tipping point − once melting glaciers shut down the Gulf Stream, we would see extreme within decades, study shows

"The results showed that it’s headed in that direction. If that happened, average temperatures would drop by several degrees in North America, parts of Asia and Europe, and people would see severe and cascading consequences around the world."

https://theconversation.com/atlantic-ocean-is-headed-for-a-tipping-point-once-melting-glaciers-shut-down-the-gulf-stream-we-would-see-extreme-climate-change-within-decades-study-shows-222834

dan613,
@dan613@mstdn.ca avatar

@CelloMomOnCars Note that the decline is only 15% since 1950. The last collapse was at the end of the ice age, and was likely caused by a giant lake forming on an ice sheet. At some point an ice dam broke, releasing all the fresh water into the Atlantic at once. That is unlikely to happen this time. It isn't the end. We still have time to change course. But we do have to change, even if the AMOC is in no danger.

@the5thColumnist @jd The advantage of being a petro state, though, is that our emissions will automatically drop as people stop using our products.

Thoughts on the use of in Mastodon:

Markdown is a simple formatting convention that lets you show formatting intent in a readable and consistent way. So, italics, bold, and code would be formatted appropriately. https://www.markdownguide.org/basic-syntax/

I mostly use italics because I speak like Chandler Bing.

The Glitch variant of Mastodon lets you use Markdown (in the settings), and it outputs the HTML code automatically so if you read my post online you would see formatting.
