Is it time to hop from .social to another instance?

darktable,

Anyone on photog.social have an invite?

darktable,

@jill lack of moderation on mastodon.social it seems

darktable,

@fotografie just running this account is more than enough. We don't need to run an instance.

darktable,

@RGBes do you ever look at the local timeline? There is some wild stuff in there.

orlas, to random

Hi.
Does anyone uses to edit photos. I'm starting to use it and really could use some help.
Thanks.

darktable,

@orlas @tyler those actions are the minimum necessary steps to make a raw image suitable for viewing.

For masks, see the manual: https://docs.darktable.org/usermanual/4.2/en/darkroom/masking-and-blending/masks/

Actually for most things, see the manual.

darktable,

@orlas

Happy editing! 😍

may have marked as deprecated, but we still love it and its color management features! 😍 It is a critical part of our stack.

darktable,

@garrett they've starter talking about it, which is nice. But its still probably several years before a stable implementation and all the tooling catches up.

Contrast that with the discussion on pixls.us that happened some 5 years ago...

darktable,

@Lapineige redshift is likely incompatible with good color management, since it seems to load an ICC profile to do the shift. Stop using redshift when you need critical color accuracy.

darktable,

@Lapineige redshift stupidly applies its ICC profile. You can only apply one ICC profile. That's it.

darktable,

@garrett "soon" 🙃🙃🙃 we still need argyllcms and displaycal to support this new protocol, or some software to be written from scratch to replace those two critical softwares.

darktable,

@Lapineige sorry to hear that, but I don't think darktable can do anything about this.

darktable,

@garrett but the py3 port has made a released they've made a few: https://github.com/eoyilmaz/displaycal-py3/releases

darktable,

@matthegap @garrett for a complete color managed workflow, we need to:

  1. Attach a calibration device
  2. Run calibration software like argyllcms or displaycal
  3. calibration software runs using calibration device and generates an ICC profile to correct your screen
  4. Resulting ICC profile is loaded and used by your system.

Currently only #4 is possible on Wayland. #1-3 are the hard parts.

darktable,

@matthegap we have had reports of graphical glitches under Wayland, but we are not aware of any bugs filed. If you see some graphical glitch, first try X11, and file a bug.

darktable,

@etrigan63 why? It doesn't have the features we need.

darktable,

@etrigan63 people have been saying that x11 is dead for like a decade. But its the only Foss display server with working color management. The Wayland developers know what features we need. The technical discussion happened 5 years ago for color management.

You can see it isn't ready here: https://arewewaylandyet.com/

So its moving in that direction, yes, but its probably still several years away for Wayland to get support and all the tooling to adapt and have a usable stack.

darktable,

@etrigan63 yes but very active development does not mean we are getting the features we need. There was just a dev sprint at ResHat where they talked about HDR and color management. No code was written at this sprint, just talk.

Again, we think it will be several years before Wayland has a working color management stack. We'll evaluate it when it has the features we need. Doing any work to support it now would be a waste of time.

darktable,

@etrigan63 not sure about PNG export, you can ask on pixls.us or open a bug on github if you want help investigating.

This is your irregular reminder are fucking dicks:
https://www.vice.com/en/article/a3xk3p/adobe-tells-users-they-can-get-sued-for-using-old-versions-of-photoshop

> Adobe Tells Users They Can Get Sued for Using Old Versions of Photoshop

We need tools to get to the point where they can replace Adobe tools. Open alternatives are great, but they are sadly not there yet to replace Adobe tools for professionals.

And won't be unless projects like @inkscape get enough funding to develop to a point of being viable alternatives.

Yes, it is in no small part about the money.

darktable,

@patrick_h_lauke @tek_dmn @rysiek the edits do not carry over. Nor would you want them too, since darktable's edit tools are quite different.

darktable,

@patrick_h_lauke @tek_dmn @rysiek yeah but that's what lock in is, right, and I'll be that way for every photo editing app. We don't think there are any raw editors where edits are interchangeable.

At some point you will have to decide not to be locked in anymore, export jpegs/tiffs of your current edits, then accept that you'll need to reedit in your new editor.

Or at some point you'll need to start paying adobe monthly. Maybe thats worth it for you. Maybe not

darktable,

@tek_dmn @patrick_h_lauke @rysiek sure its technically possible, but then you're just chasing them, and adobe makes it difficult to chase them on purpose. Take a look at the PSD file format if you need further proof.

We want to make good tools to edit your photos with, not spend time chasing Adobe formats.

darktable,

@tek_dmn @patrick_h_lauke @rysiek the hardest part will be that Lightroom uses a DCP formulated after the manufacturer's jpeg, and darktable doesn't even try at all to do or replicate that.

darktable,

@rysiek @aerique @tek_dmn @patrick_h_lauke just re-editing your in darktable and making it look good would likely be much faster and easier ;)
