For a simple lift such as at a railway station that only has 2 floors, I suggested a single button marked GO. It's simpler than expecting people to know what button to press.

I have seen this in action at Perth Underground station. https://aus.social/@jessta/112433585648157837

"It's going to be a bloody disaster": Tell me again about how the second road tunnel under Sydney Harbour won't make congestion worse?

"Civil engineer Les Wielinga, a former CEO at the now-defunct Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA), made the fiery comments at a NSW parliamentary inquiry into the bungled Rozelle Interchange.

"The Western Harbour Tunnel, which is under construction, will allow drivers travelling between the inner west and the North Shore to bypass the CBD.

"Entries and exits to the tunnel will lie at the Ernest Street interchange in Cammeray and near the Falcon Street interchange at North Sydney.

"'It's going to be a bloody disaster,' Mr Wielinga told the upper house committee on Friday.

"Paul Forward, another former CEO of the RTA, told the inquiry he was concerned about the project's design.

"'You've now got three motorways coming out into this short area, and whilst I would recognise there are some exit points, some off-ramps, those motorways are now all going into the Lane Cove Tunnel,' he said.

"'A large number of lanes are going into two lanes at the Lane Cove Tunnel. Sounds familiar?'"

By now you may have seen the train v car at Woy Woy level crossing around 6pm on Friday night. It wasn't me as I'm on early mornings now but I have driven that particular service from Sydney to Newcastle. My colleagues who were on board are doing as well as can be expected.

It could have been a lot worse as the car driver at least got out of his car before impact.

erkpod,
@erkpod@aus.social avatar

@kcarruthers I don't know how or why but some guy actually got footage of the point of impact.

Today is a special day. 30 years ago today, I walked into Circular Quay station for the first time as a Station Assistant. I was only initially hired for 6 months. I'm still here.

Fast forward 30 years. Now an intercity driver at Newcastle. Next year will be 20 years as a driver. It's been an interesting ride. A major milestone today.

@timrichards It's 99% good!

Hmm, just read an Age article that began:

"Yep, it’s the most depressing time of year, the day we start back at work, aka Blue Monday if we want even more US culture..."

I've been back at work for two weeks! Who decided that 15 January was back-to-work day?

erkpod,
@erkpod@aus.social avatar

@timrichards Even office workers at my extended place of employment went back last week!

Crikey, I only just noticed this bit at the front of my new passport - right up to date. So if I play a crescendo of trumpets on my phone then read this out loud at US passport control, the TSA agents step back deferentially and let me through? Right?

erkpod,
@erkpod@aus.social avatar

@timrichards That's ironic because I'm pretty sure it doesn't get you through LHR any quicker!!

Been hanging out at the Railfan platform with a great view of Metro & V/line services. A few heritage locos to put the birthday cake on the candles to go along with The Overland & the XPTs for good measure.

Melbourne public transport people: What's the best tram depot to hang out the front of?

erkpod,
@erkpod@aus.social avatar

@jpm @fakeyarratrams They'll say the depot with the cat. LOL

Just found out that Belinda Carlisle won't be dancing in the Australian summer rain as she's injured herself. Tour rescheduled to September/October next year.

I can never remember what SMH is supposed to mean on here, because I always think of "Sydney Morning Herald". What's the other meaning?

Well that was fun. Picked up a carriage worth of primary school kids on my train going on an excursion. Because their entry & exit stations were closest to me, I greeted & farewelled the large group. Some of the kids had never been on a train before & totally enjoyed the experience.

A pity when station precincts go seedy...

Almost 20 years since Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station was completed, the Spencer Street precinct is on the precipice of failure https://www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/spencer-street-s-soul-is-suffering-as-people-pass-through-but-never-stay-20230828-p5e00w.html

@timrichards @ThermiteBeGiants As I discovered last week, there's still a Red Rooster line between the open RR store & the closed one there. 😂😂😂

Gentlemen, THIS is democracy, MANIFEST! 🇦🇺🇨🇳 New piece of the infamous Brisbane man who's only crime was eating a succulent Chinese meal in the early 90s 🍜 Ta-ta! | Prints/tees: https://rb.gy/9r9lx

@timrichards @nordacious Let me find you a clip. This guy is often known as Succulent Chinese Meal Guy or Democracy Manifest Guy.

Arrested by Queensland Police many years ago while eating a succulent Chinese meal in what turned out to be a case of mistaken identity.

    @ppossej There's plenty of high floor trams that should be removed before the W class. If every stop was accessible, that would be great!

    @timrichards@aus.social avatar

    Good ideas. They could start by bringing the pedestrian area between footpath and tram tracks to the same level as the footpath.

    Elizabeth Street in Melbourne could be an inviting boulevard-style entrance to the CBD

    @timrichards The Elizabeth St tram terminus at Flinders St is dangerous & needs to be redesigned. It doesn't help that it still needs to deal with a lot of high floor trams, sadly.

    Here's today's Adelaide bound Ghan (Bolivar loop) & Thursday's Adelaide bound Indian Pacific (Chidda station). Good to see the relevant livery on the lead loco as well for both trains.
