Just got word that there's a big datacenter cooling outage at 350 E Cermak causing hosting/networking outages. It's 130F in the hot rows.

When we were younger, the idea of "having access to all the music" was amazing. But now there's too much music. I feel like streaming services actually stunt your interest in music because there's too much to choose from, so you let the algorithm guess what you may like and it can sometimes work but often not. And then you get stuck in a rut of the same old playlists and start to lose your connection with your collection, because you no longer have a collection to care about.

> Gum disease-related bacteria tied to colorectal cancer

> Why Is Colorectal Cancer Rising Rapidly among Young Adults?

hmmm could it be.... the fake sugars which are fueling a massive colony of a bacterial strain in our guts that should not be there and would not thrive if they didn't keep getting fed daily?? Where else is the huge uptick in IBS and other digestive issues coming from?

Almost all young people are exposed to ultra-processed foods and fake sugars their entire lives now. So many of us born, say, pre-1990 were not exposed to this.

  • Eat more fiber. Take supplements if you need.

  • Consume source of probiotics: fermented foods (sauerkraut, kimchee, etc) and drinks (kombucha, yogurts, kefir, etc)

  • Take probiotic supplements

  • Stay the fuck away from fake sugars. They're not healthy, they're not zero calorie, they're not "diet" anything. It's a scam.

Anatomy of a credit card rewards program https://www.bitsaboutmoney.com/archive/anatomy-of-credit-card-rewards-programs/

This is crazy. They're frothing and fighting over what seems like a small share but in totality it is not. And this has become so complicated because it's such a lucrative business. Debit and credit cards are a scourge on society.

So, this allegedly just happened in Canada. Refused to give a bank customer $3000 cash out of their account. Wanted proof of what it was for first.

Who is the better scientist / engineer?

feld, to random
@feld@bikeshed.party avatar

I wonder how many billions of dollars in salaries and electricity were wasted on engineers re-tooling their development/deployment processes to use "main" instead of "master" as the primary branch

Not a single dollar of that effort reached the pockets of an African American and provided a tangible improvement to their lives. 99% of them don't even know it happened.

Did you know you can "kill" a TCP connection on FreeBSD with a command called "tcpdrop"?

Meta may provide the opportunity for you to once again communicate with your friends and families using Meta services or connect with strangers and businesses without having to give Meta any personal information or use a Meta account.

Is this a good thing?

"But why couldn't they use Linux??" The GPL.

> Beckhoff needed a proven and reliable operating system that would support their product line’s full range of hardware, from ARM to Intel Xeon. Preferring open standards, Beckhoff first looked at Linux as a choice to replace Windows CE but was deterred due to The GNU General Public License that would create additional legal complications for Beckhoff’s customers as well as force Beckhoff to share their proprietary real-time, TwinCAT, which runs in kernel-mode. As a result, Beckhoff determined the need for an open source operating system with a permissive license, allowing them to adapt the kernel to accommodate the TwinCAT real-time without needing to contribute TwinCAT’s source code.
