from HN article the other day

> Intel is changing the chip branding away from the i3/i5/i7 series naming convention

> "This is a good move, the current convention is too confusing for consumers. A 2023 i5 is faster than a 2013 i7? So perplexing!"

yeah, consumers really struggle with this kind of thing like "How can a 2023 BMW M3 be better than a 1997 BMW M5? FIVE IS BIGGER THAN THREE!!!!!!!!!!!!!"

Guys, these are ADVERTISEMENTS.

Companies like ProtonMail are not your friend.

You don't need to boost them.

I thought we didn't want ads here?

So I went to the post office to mail a letter and buy a book of stamps and they were able to give me one stamp off a book they were using at the counter, then walked around for a minute looking for more stamps. She called up someone and asked if there were more stamps and the answer was "no". Also she was the only person in the post office.

And she had to tell people to stay way back because there was a camera timing her customer interactions and it would misreport if people stood too close in line???

What the fuck has the GOP done to our post offices? And how does a post office have no stamps??????

Are surprise engagements appropriate?

An aunt and uncle on my wife's side are having an anniversary party but it's actually a secret engagement party for their son who will propose to his girlfriend IN FRONT OF THE ENTIRE EXTENDED FAMILY

This horrifies me

You go to the store, see a new enticing snack. You purchase it.

Later you get the opportunity to try the snack. It's disappointing. Not inedible, not disgusting -- just disappointing.

Do you eat it anyway?

I guess I should not be surprised that people are outraged that Kristi Noem shot her dog, but man it's really weird to see people say stuff like "it would have been more humane to take it to a vet and have it put down properly"

Uhhh I don't know if you know this, but it's 100% normal and more humane to shoot the dog than to take it to a vet to have them put down. This is how almost everyone who doesn't live in a city handles these situations. My own childhood dog was old and sick -- dad took him to the woods, tied to a tree, shot him, and buried him.

People have this fantasy that pumping harmful chemicals into animals is more humane because they don't like gore. But it's not more humane. It causes fear and stress and pain. It's well known that a firing squad is the most instant and reliable execution method but Americans for some unknown reason think it's too barbaric, but watching someone scream and writhe and gasp for several minutes is not? So weird.

Guns are even used by farm vets sometimes.

I swear yesterday I saw there was some new-ish flag for SLAAC/RTADV that makes the client prefer IPv6 over IPv4

I should have bookmarked that page, search is failing me now

I'm so fed up with how slow Ansible is, Salt is a rotting piece of shit since VMWare took over, and Chef is on a financial dead end where they make it intentionally difficult to run a "chef server" so you have to outsource to their free cloud hosting (LOL? Yeah sure give them full access to your config management), and Puppet has always been written off

I'm going back to CFEngine. It's 1000x as fast as those other solutions, designed to be self-healing, supports everything I care about, has the best inline-file-editing capabilities of anything in existence (really! it's quite magical), has never been hacked (really!), and the "server" component is a simple daemon on a TCP port.

These types of articles try to trick you into setting up a business where you import Chinese garbage and flip it on eBay and Etsy as some "get rich easy" scheme.

It doesn't work, and you'll just end up in tons of debt and sitting in a mounting of bad quality products you can't move. It's almost as bad as MLM schemes

@jon Presto was so good, the Opera Mail client was also the fastest to sync accounts with 500k emails, etc.

Was there a real architectural reason for dropping Presto or was it just the cost of maintaining your own browser engine?

I don't know if the judge is really wrong about this. We'll see what happens but controlling private loans/contracts like this smells like the opposite of a free market. If they want them to stop doing it they should find ways to incentivize them not to. A good first step would be to require some kind of Nutrition Facts type standardized labeling of the contents of loans and credit cards so people with no financial literacy can really understand what it means and help steer them away from being taken advantage of.

Otherwise they need to find a way to inject competition into the market so nobody will want the abusive private industry loans. The Federal Reserve can't do it by law, but the Treasury could. Would it be risky to operate as a creditor to the public? Oh hell yeah, but how much worse could it possibly get than the world we're living in now anyway? lol

Ahh yes, triple the tariffs on Chinese steel and crank the tariffs on Chinese cars to 100%. Continue to punish hardworking Americans by making them pay exorbitant prices for American-made goods instead of giving them access to a free market. Make sure the working class pumps as much of their income as possible back into American billionaire bank accounts instead of Chinese billionaire bank accounts.

Live paycheck to paycheck. Eat bugs. Suffer. For America. :911:

Don't let the Chinese win. It's better to be poor and American than middle class and China benefitted.

Don't forget to vote for the lizard this November.
