My latest tech history column is now up on Every!

In 1981, Don Estridge broke every rule IBM had to create the IBM PC. He invented an entire industry and gifted it to the company he loved.

IBM never forgave him for it. This is his story. https://every.to/the-crazy-ones/the-misfit-who-built-the-ibm-pc

There must be capitalists or economists who can see that we've made the switch from low-hanging-fruit consumption to self-consumption. Cory Doctorow obviously sees it, but he's neither. Tyler Cowen or Nassim Taleb maybe? Has either written about this phenomenon? Cowen has The Great Stagnation, which is Part 1. Taleb has Incerto, but I've only read part of book 1. Does he write about the shift to self-consumption?

@sarajw @freakazoid a lot of it is about acceptable alternatives being available.

A lot of people read that piece as suggesting that everyone from Twitter would suddenly go to the same place.

That's not what's happening. Social Media is fragmenting as the costs and barriers to entry for niche micro-platforms are lower now.

Doing the final edits on my next tech column this lunchtime, and the real lesson in this one is just how badly IBM fucked up their PC business right from the start.

They never wanted it, and when they got it they were so keen to use it for managerial positioning that they fucked it all up.

Have had to read a lot of book reviews in academic journals this week for reasons.

Amazing how many of them can be summarised as:

"this book is factually accurate but also makes our area of study seem too interesting to normal people. Not recommended."

Also known as disassembly day. The point where you redo a bunch of stuff, now you know it all works, to improve cable management.
