@simon_brooke At least in the Netherlands, it's often instead of a normal bike, with no additional use of the bike. So it's both bad for the environment, and for getting enough exercise.

    @mollyquell @holly It's pretty insane if you ask me. Only one of the four cabinets finished the four years. While the Prime Minister should be the one keeping them together.

    I also suspect there are a lot of other reasons they let the cabinet fall.

    I just read this fab article (and subscribed !) on Japanese convenience stores and you should too. It's great.

    One of the most wonderful things about visiting Japan is realizing how things that normally suck (especially in the states) can, with a little work be brilliant. Vending machines, toilets, and kombini (convenience stores) being just three of those things.

    If we priced externalities into the cost of fossil fuels, it’s not a profitable business.

    The cleanup costs in California will be triple the industry’s projected profits, and that doesn’t even include cleaning up CO₂ and CH₄ from the atmosphere.

    @Npars01 @tshirtman @davidho They also get money to transition to greener things. Like generating hydrogen from electricity, why? Because they can get away with it. Not because they need to.

    This whole NICU parent thing has filled me with a million takes—many of which are probably wrong—but one that is really blowing my mind is:

    If the climate movement really wants to get serious about a sustainable society, we need a damn good answer on replacements for medical grade plastics. Modern medicine simply cannot exist at this moment without petrochemicals.

    @mttaggart @Npars01 @justafrog That's fine, but we're still globally at a point we keep using more fossil fuels. So we won't run out of oil to make plastics soon. There will be lots of challenges moving towards near 100% renewables. Currently we still struggle to convince everyone we eventually need to move there.

    [Geek-only:] If someone managed to quietly pwn Dependabot, they could pretty well take over the world in a matter of weeks, amirite? Every time I “review” a Dependabot PR, in the back of my mind there’s a voice saying “I guess I can assume this is all right…”

    @timbray yes, we even auto merge them now, if the build succeeds. Luckily maven is well protected. But still, a bad upgrade could spread fast..

    @johanvos We desperately need something like that in the Netherlands. Just watched Pointer about how our infrastructure doesn't suffice. Schools and companies have to wait up to 10 years to get more power. Delaying moving to more sustainable solutions.

    What's some Kafka configuration that confused you at first? and how did that confusion affect your config strategy?

    @Cerchie I had some weird difference with latency comparing different solutions. It turned out the producer's linger.ms setting has a default, of 0, but Kafka Streams set it to 100, by default. It took some time to conclude this was causing the weird difference.

    @MetGitarenEnZo @stux Ze hebben genoeg abbonees. Maar misschien dat het benodigde aantal omhoog moet. Ik ben het zeker niet met ze eens. Maar alleen al als het een beetje lijkt op het beperken van de vrijheid van dat soort ideeën, kan het juist voor verdere verdeling zorgen.

    @MetGitarenEnZo @stux Wat dan wel? Ik zie het vooral als een probleem, omdat dat weer als voorbeeld gebruikt gaat worden dat ze 'onderdrukt' worden. Of erger nog, dat mensen dingen gaan roepen als dat ze juist gelijk hebben, en het daardoor gestopt worden.

    Wat dan wel een goede oplossing is weet ik niet. We worden aan alle kanten misleid. Zodra je eenmaal een 'verkeerde' richting in bent geslagen, lijkt het lastig terug te komen.

    Misschien maar eens beginnen met onderwijs en zorg..
