I think Angular users may even be worse than React users, on the whole, for using the wrong markup for stuff. Looking at a page with background images on <div>s instead of, well, images and a form made out of <li> and <a> elements with button roles instead of checkboxes and radios. Oh and not even in a <form> element, just a <div>.
@heydon yup, that's a problem that's easy to miss (and hard to correct)... also there's a new control-flow feature which moves them further away from HTML syntax ๐ https://angular.io/guide/control_flow
Just read on BBC News that the new version of ChatGPT can flirt. Who is that for? Who asked for that? Who's interested in being chatted up by an ephemeral cloud of stolen reddit posts? Told by a soulless megazord of pilfered landing pages that it wants to "smash your back doors in ๐ฅต"?
And why is the BBC, of all institutions, letting me know this radically pathetic experience is becoming available?
Currently obsessed with Mudhoney. Many may write them off as "grunge also-rans". Not only was the term 'grunge' coined to describe their sound, but it's not the overdriven DS-1 sound of their more famous peers. It's 60s style germanium fuzz. They were the first grunge band to break the UK, the band's singer, Mark Arm, packages and ships their records himself and--for my money--their post grunge era records are their best. Oh! And they have lyrics about shithead antivaxxers.
@heydon Just banged on their latest album while gardening. Ooof. Good stuff! Was vaguely aware of it coming out and people saying good things about it, but that was up there energy-wise with their early stuff! Thx for rec!
Does anyone have any experience with SVG filters but applied to <canvas>? Before I go down that rabbit hole, does using them with <canvas> improve performance at all, or should I expect the same jankiness?
@heydon nice, Gotoh offers great quality for a fair price! Did you notice a difference when playing? Different bridge can have a huge impact. Also what scale is this one?
sigh I have an American client who is having trouble, they say, being able to convert to ยฃ (their end) for paying me. I have business bank account for my LTD that only accepts ยฃ or โฌ, apparently.
Anyone know of a way around this? A service either they or I could use? I would really prefer not to change bank accounts. Wish I'd know Starling was this limited at the outset.
Another bizarre pattern I keep seeing a lot of is having multiple skip links to different parts of the page. Total overkill. If you actually use headings, there's no real need.
@yatil@heydon Thanks for answering! I'm curious if any other interesting outcomes of that research you did for WAI were published, the only public artifact I could find is https://www.w3.org/WAI/EO/wiki/WAI_Website_Redesign#IA/nav but that seems more like an internal project space rather than something intended for outsiders to look through.
@chudesnov@heydon This was indeed an internal project of the EOWG with specific research for that specific site and problem space. As these findings were not generally applicable (and intentionally not broad enough to make any specific recommendations), and the redesign was basically done parallel to other work, publishing anything would have been misleading or of very limited use. As said before, context matters a lot.
Was just reminded that you can use no headings in a web page and automated tests will pass you for WCAG compliance.
You can't use the wrong heading structure if you use no headings at all! Automated tests can't tell where the structure needs to be broken up into sections because they would have to understand the nature of the content. #a11y
@heydon It would be nice if they could at least give a basic recommendation, like:
Count the number of consecutive paragraphs (with no other structuring elements like lists, tables, etc. in between) โ "Maybe you should introduce headlines to structure the content"
Count the characters inside a single paragraph โ "This seems like a very long paragraph. You should try to spit it up."
Currently apoplectic that the Speech Recognition API hears โfuckโ and outputs ['f***']. You puritanical Christian dickheads are at it again aren't you?
"Well, given matter can neither be created or destroyed, we're actually the same age. The perpetual process of our being recycled is just a little out of sync."
