Hey, I'm a #designer & #developer from Germany. I like the open-source spirit and am dipping my toes into decentralisation. I've also always had a knack for #creativeWriting, so that's something I like doing in my time off. Nice to meet you! 😁

That feeling when you really want to get a @frameworkcomputer because you really love what the company is trying to do but can’t justify buying yet another laptop. 😅

Maybe I’ll let myself be swayed all the way once there’s a German keyboard with a super key instead of the Windows key available. 😉

And for what it’s worth, I don’t mind rounded display corners at all. 👌

If I have to take a dedicated server to make my small spaceship game work, I'm seriously considering going with WebRTC instead of Enet for networking...
It's a bit of a dream to just be able to start the game on itch and BAM - you're flying with other people 😄

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@geegaz I’ve been wanting to add WebRTC to one of my projects as well for easy and local multiplayer that doesn’t require a server to function because I think that’s more sustainable in the long run and will keep working even if I drop the project, but unfortunately you do still need servers for negotiating a connection, at least within a browser. 😅

I turned thirty this month and considering the thoughts going through my head at the moment, I thought it fitting to write about them.

https://amxmln.com/blog/2024/turning-thirty/

It might’ve turned out a bit gloomy, but I’m hoping it doesn’t come across as whiny. 😅

Anyway: onwards to a new decade!

Someone told me they'd call me this afternoon, without specifying the time... am I the only one who's pausing everything they do just to be able to take a hypothetical call, or just me? 🙈

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@vdvestelle very relatable. 😅 I get very stressed out about such things. 😅 And no matter how little I do, the calls seem to still come in the most inopportune moments. 🤣

I'm in the process of removing a lot of art from Instagram and other Meta sites, due to their decisions to use our data to feed their AI. Instead, I am planning on only posting art that is protected with Glaze: a sort of overlay that confuses AI scrapers. I'd recommend that all artists and creatives on Twitter and Meta do the same. For more info search TheGlazeProject.

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@chrislewislee is this one glazed? The subtle pattern kind of makes the many details even more interesting to me. 😅

@dosch that’s a Logitech wireless keyboard. I think this one: https://www.logitech.com/en-us/products/keyboards/pebble-keys-2.920-011775.html

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@kepano it looks really interesting! 😊 If only it had symmetrical bezels though…and a bit of a lower price tag. 😅 I wonder if it’ll become available in the EU eventually.

The screen tech looks amazing though! That’s something I’ve always wanted. 👌

I’m invited on an author podcast to talk about SEO. Just the day after I wondered if I should go back to marketing… is that a sign that I should? 😅

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@vdvestelle @beach I think your background gives you an edge over other junior designers. Maybe apply for something above your current qualifications and grow into it? 🤔 “Junior” has such a wide range IMO. Maybe there’s even jobs at smaller companies / startups that would allow you to do both? 😅

Not an expert at all, but it seems to me that you’re really not wanting to go back to just marketing. 😅

i'm struggling. i'd like to build a very simple website for a client. i could just build it with html+css in a couple of days, but she wants to update the content every now and then.

it's more than "just text" where i could use markdown for the content. there are some special components for blockquotes, a timeline, pricing table, etc. required.

usually i like my contentful+astro setup, but for this project it feels like an overkill (because time and budget are limited).

any ideas/thoughts? 🤔

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@lara_amalia maybe check out @mattrbld —it shouldn’t be too different to configure from something like Contentful. I built it to abstract away most of the whole deal around committing to Git after making changes for non-technical users, but that’s still what it does, just from the browser, so you as a developer don’t miss out on any features and stay in control. 😊

Got something you're having a hard time starting on? Just do it for 1 min.

I know. I know.

This sounds silly. But I often find starting the hardest part.

Once I get into it, it's a lot easier to say to myself, "well, self, you're already here. So maybe you can do it for another minute."

(Pssst...also sometimes I drop right into that flow and forget that I said I'd only do it for a minute.)

Where do you guys get your design inspiration from these days? I’m especially interested in and design. I used to use Dribbble a lot in the past, but it seems to have shifted towards illustrative content and there’s just a lot to sift through before finding something in my niche. 🤔

I'm trying out a new terminal (Alacritty). My previous terminal (Warp) would update too frequently (sometimes multiple times a day) requiring a restart. And to make that extra annoying the restarted window would create a duplicate icon in my dock. It was minor annoyances that added up. Also it had features I couldn't disable and did not use or have any interest in using (AI crap). I just finished my config and am pretty happy with how it's looking so far.

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@micah oh interesting! I’ve been using Hyper, but it seems pretty abandoned, so maybe I should give something new a try. 😊 Thanks for sharing. 👍

I know I should probably watch some Google I/O videos but I just do not care about AI in the slightest and I know it's a huge topic this year. Sometimes I wonder if I'm on the wrong career path 🤔 Could also just be burnout though, hard to say.

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@billy I watched the keynote and yeah…I don’t really feel like watching any of the session videos. 😅

There’s a couple interesting summary articles on certain topics (like running on-device models in the browser to add privacy respecting „AI“ features to apps), but if you don’t care about AI at all, there’s not much else. 😅

My is barely half a year old and already the haptic motor seems to be failing? 😳 There’s a sharp clicking sound / rap on the back of my phone on some vibrations. Seems unrelatedly the actual strength of the haptic feedback and only happens about once in every three or four vibrations, but it’s concerning.

I guess I’ll have to have it checked out. 🙄

You can turn off the “x packages are looking for funding” messages that get logged with each npm install by setting

fund = false

in your project’s or user’s npmrc file.

https://domhabersack.com/blog/npm-fund-false

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@domhabersack that’s a neat little trick! I’m not too bothered by the message, but it’s good to know there’s a way to turn it off if that ever changes. 😊

I remember a time when I was excited about , but for a few years now, it’s always felt like a drawn out death rattle with repeating information, cringe jokes and performances, and innovation that feels like it’s trying very hard to convince people of its usefulness when actually it’s just empty promises. 😅

I wish there was a way for a #PWA to schedule a notification on-device without the need of a server.

That’s it, that’s the Toot.

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@billy I can understand the sentiment! I feel like these days we’re 95% there for 80% of use-cases, at least on Android (Safari keeps getting better, but is still a mess).

It can be very frustrating when something like notification scheduling is missing (there even was an origin trial for it in Chrome a while ago, sadly the feature got dropped), but personally, I still think web apps are the future.

For me at least, the benefits still outweigh the issues. 😊

amxmln,
@amxmln@mastodon.design avatar

@billy yeah cross-platform-ness is a big reason I like the web. I feel like it’s the only true way to offer something on almost any platform from the same code base. Plus, using HTML and CSS for UIs just feels right to me. 😅

That being said, I haven’t done much native development, so I can’t really say how things are going on that front.

@gabopsd Procreate and Affinity Designer are great on it, but that’s pretty much it, yeah. 😅
