Spent some of the weekend playing with Arduinos + Home Assistant (@homeassistant) to keep a better eye on my plants. Even though it's C++, it's so refreshing compared to shipping modern prod code!

Single file, no tests, no 3rd party dependencies, no infra, just run code & see results immediately (if it works, it's done). And with deep sleep the result should keep running on battery for years untouched. Super fun! ✨

I went to a kindergarten daddy-child brunch at 10. Everyone started drinking at 11. I walked a friend home at 12 where we drank and ate until 21. Walking home I met a drunk couple who invited me to their house for beer and takoyaki. What a weird day.

This week was a wild ride at work. Solved an OOM disaster where 1.8MB of gzip'd json would decompress into over 600MB of JSON, which balloons into more when deserialized. And brought processing time down on some background jobs from 5 minutes to 3 seconds.

Would you believe me if I said linked lists are not sets and n^n algorithms are bad?

Incidents like these remind me why some tech companies interview for algorithm efficiency.

Shocked to find that apparently almost 1000 people are bitten by snakes each year in Taiwan.

Australia has a reputation for dangerous wildlife, but I can’t imagine 1000 Australians are bitten by snakes each year.

After just getting a baker's dozen of technical books from that are relevant to my work, the first thing was filing them away in

The second thing was rabbitholing into how one could set up an LLM-based system to query all these ebooks I hoarded over time? ... Too much information, too little time to make use of them, and this plan would successfully distract me from the actual needed act of learning and synthesis in my own head. 😅

With the amount of time I've spent recently on setting up SSH keys, setting up passkeys, setting up TOTP codes, setting up hardware keys... it feels like I'm mostly doing security rather than making use of the tools I'm setting up security for.

I guess that's par for the course of the 2024 Internet?

I love the smell of the passage way outside the Akihabara Yodobashi Hibiya exit. It hasn't changed in the 12 years I've been visiting there. It is a mix of breads, pastries, donuts, and custards.

Patching #ZFS kernel module's license info to be able to get back to my files, as the #Linux kernel blocked non-GPL access to some of the previously used functions - and while following up on that, seems like #ArchLinuxARM might be sickly?
Seems like their package sources are unreachable ("internal error"), while the kernel stuck at a version from close to a year ago...
Gonna have to switch distros?
