@diyelectromusic, since you're into embedded tech and microcontrollers, you may appreciate this one.

It's a Real-time Operating System kernel I wrote in C and Assembly for AVR chips. My intent was to learn about how operating systems interface with hardware.

I'd like to rewrite it with and finish the task scheduler.

Spent some of the weekend playing with Arduinos + Home Assistant (@homeassistant) to keep a better eye on my plants. Even though it's C++, it's so refreshing compared to shipping modern prod code!

Single file, no tests, no 3rd party dependencies, no infra, just run code & see results immediately (if it works, it's done). And with deep sleep the result should keep running on battery for years untouched. Super fun! ✨

I’m pretty proud of my THX Deep Note sound recreation attempt, which I realized I only posted on Twitter (RIP). So I upload it to Youtube & here. The Mozzi synth library is great and it was fun getting it to do this. And thanks to Mike Rugnetta for getting me near the rabbit hole of the THX sound!

A tiny breadboard hosts a tiny circuitboard and a headphone jack going to a bluetooth speaker. The circuitboard is powered by a phone battery pack via a small red USB cable. A hand plugs the cable into the battery pack to start the sound playing.

Q: any reason to pay the premium for a genuine Arduino Uno rather than a compatible board with good reviews?

I am about to make a simple automatic plant grow system, based on an ESP8266. Luckily I got a from Catnip Electronics https://wemakethings.net/chirp/ at which covers pretty much all of the parameters, I want to measure ^.^

Thanks again to @miceuz who gave it to me for free! :)

Any electronics hackers?

I got this cheap portable video light, and it comes with some preset light animations.

This has a USB-C port, maybe it exposes something more than power?

Maybe it'd be possible to get access to this thing's underlying software and reprogram it? ;)

@unfa man, i'm so with you on this. no, i don't care about portable lights, but i desperately want to learn practical #electronics (got a bachelor's in electronics from those soviet times, useless as i had never touched a live mcu during studies!) and thus try to play with every #arduino howto or tutorial i can find & understand… but there's a huge gap between simple lessons (lady ada) and any «real life» application :-/

still, i don't let hope abandon me :-D

My first mac was an iMac 20" bought in September 2008. It's 16 years old and hasn't been powered on in 8 years but still looks new.

So, why not give it new life as a dedicated emulator machine? 🕹

It has a 2.66 GHz Core 2 Duo (64-bit) and 4 GB of RAM, which should be good.

The 320 GB HDD was OK, but better transplant the 250 GB SSD upgrade out of my first macbook.

When I first booted Ubuntu LTS off an USB stick, I was suprised how smooth it ran. Plus, it supported all the hardware! 😮

1/3 🧵

The iMac showing its innards, but stil with the LCD panel attached (the disk drive is behind it, so it had to be dissassembled next). It has never been opened, so it was pretty dusty, and it smelled of old rags.

I figured that another button would be needed for some games I want to play, and upgraded my custom spinner controller. And why not add a jack for an optional foot pedal?

I can't play the piano to save my life, so the M-Audio pedal I had lying around had been unused forever. It's just a push-button inside.

Code and things now on GitHub: https://github.com/carlosefr/spinner-mouse

So far only APB (1987) really benefits from the pedal, but it's worth it. 🚔

Atari's "APB: All Points Bulletin" from 1987. You play the role of "Officer Bob" on his first days on the job, driving around blazing your siren at litterbugs and chasing criminals. It's not very fun to play if you have to accelerate and operate the siren with one hand while you drive with the other. The original arcade cabinet used a foot pedal for acceleration, and that makes all the difference.

https://www.theverge.com/2023/12/27/24016791/astrohaus-freewrite-alpha-digital-typewriter-e-ink

I have no idea how such a shitty product can exist. Same price buys you a Chromebook; there are plenty of software libre distraction-free writing apps out there (try opening a terminal and typing "vim"?).

Or you could chicken out and buy a Kindle Fire Max 11 with keyboard case for the same price.

Both of these let you type for more than a day on a charge: the only benefit of the freewrite alpha is an 80 hour battery, which is pointless with USB-C charging everywhere.

ottaross,
@ottaross@mastodon.social avatar

@cstross wow - was shocked seeing the product portfolio and the prices. At $60 it might be fair value.

Could surely make one from scratch with an all-in for $40.
