Hate it when arguments (in good fun) with a household member result in a stalemate bc we are both right. Today's edition, please enjoy these 1887 frames of an ostrich running by Eadweard Muybridge

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

The argument started regarding the technical aspects of using photography to adjudicate race winners and the worst part is we will probably have it again after some passage of time

https://www.littleredfeather.com/who-invented-the-photo-finish-camera/

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@pussreboots It started here https://union.place/@inquiline/112466279600470640

And household member was citing images like this one; and I was trying to draw us further back to Muybridge, but frankly it's easy to mix up Edgerton and Muybridge as names, and then also the tennis racket (Edgerton) and the gymnast (Muybridge) confused us further until we sorted it out.

But: what was yours!??!

This contains encouraging news

"if these cross-reactive antibodies do not rapidly wane they may confer some or even substantial protection against a pandemic caused by a related coronavirus"

(but let's be very clear that I am not sharing it for the opening sentence: "The COVID-19 is over, but the virus that caused it is still here, sending thousands of people to the hospital each week and spinning off new variants with depressing regularity" 🙄)

https://medicine.wustl.edu/news/repeat-covid-19-vaccinations-elicit-antibodies-that-neutralize-variants-other-viruses/

@beadsland Agree. I am just still not forgiving or forgetting of the "pandemic is over"-"public health emergency is over" conflation and the you-know-whose CDC and administration that did that.

Yesterday I was waiting for the bus in LA after transferring from 2 trains, and I thought, "wow, it's really good to be in the city. There's so much random beauty and vibes and I can truly be part of humanity up close in all its forms." A couple of minutes passed. Another person came up to the stop, turned to look at me, and started yelling, "YOU CAN TAKE OFF THAT MASK, YOU KNOW! COVID IS OVER! THAT SHIT'S DONE! TAKE OFF THAT MASK!"

Biobot has removed its covid wastewater dashboard and will no longer show covid wastewater data for the US.

~3 weeks after CDC stopped covid hospitalization data.

The page now: https://biobot.io/data/covid-19

Been adding more to teaching & this piece caught my eye. However not sure when I'll be able to read, seems like such a gut-punch:

"intergenerational relationships & shaped by global & aging. I reflect on the dynamics of my relationship with my mother, beginning with my departure from my home & spanning a period of 40 years. I contemplate theoretical models of intergenerational solidarity, ambivalence, & role ambiguity..."

The word "pseduoscientific" isn't as bad as it sounds if you decenter science as a place of truth (or if you also understand science to be a mutable and adapting means of discovery).

Something incapable with the scientific method isn't "false" or "not true".

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

@seachanger And the incentive/reward structures in science also encourage basically falsifying results so you can keep your research going

To @jalcine 's OP, science only came to have the moral cast of truth thru substantial effort, and that "truth" bore the imprint of social structures, and there are some good things as well as some bad things about that edifice getting questioned. We always needed better science, more democratic & accountable

In a different world I might be posting more about people’s talks but that’s not the world in which I find myself.

Howver, today’s plenary was a hastily-organized roundtable on the politics of divestment from people who’ve organized divestment campaigns at and elsewhere, glad it came together

The final challenge: getting masked people to not reflexively lower their masks to speak
