Now I know who's behind the scraper that has been giving a lot of headaches: https://pleroma.envs.net/notice/ATvo35BQNlDY9DQQue

I wonder if some internet sleuths could find where the bot's source code is at; that way, the bot and it's owner can be reported to the company hosting the source code.

This illustrate a huge risk we are are somewhat experiencing at Mastodon Social. I have reiterated that Mastodon Social is way too big to moderate as they do not have a big enough moderation team to keep up with the number of members joining.

If you are new here, Mastodon Social had suffered several SPAM attacks:
https://sakurajima.moe/@chikorita157/110384898422724959
https://sakurajima.moe/@chikorita157/110310771991434168

Also, we had run into issues where NSFW accounts are not using CW, one account posting lolicon, and an account on an Arstechnica toot promoting their Telegram channel for cooking classes.

Now, there are some small and medium size instances that are limiting/silencing Mastodon Social, few are suspending it all together. However, placing limits and suspensions on Mastodon Social have an impact on our users, which is why we won't do it ever. The problem is, Mastodon Social has an outsized influence as there is a lot of users on it and even thinking about doing a block will impact our reach.

I recommend migrating to a small or medium size instance. Why? The experience will be better with better moderation and the local timeline is more useful. Also, your posts won't get hidden on the federated timeline, meaning more reach.

We at Sakurajima (which leads to our landing page website with all the information you need to know before joining) are glad to welcome creators who review and create content around Japanese media and Japanese media fans. We both run a Mastodon and a Calckey server.

If our server don't meet your needs, try looking for another on fedi garden or JoinMastodon. Help reduce the workload of moderators of medium and small servers and migrate to a small or medium server from Mastodon Social.

ivan18rod,

@chikorita157 I still remember making a post after a bot tagged you in a DM. I just wish Eugen would realize how hot the water he got his flagships in is.

ivan18rod,

@chikorita157 Have you proposed that to the flagship admins?

Pixelfed

Sometime this week, I want to give a serious look at creating a Pixelfed account. There are images & poetry I would like to share that I do not want to be granted rights to a third-party host. Right now I am thinking mainly of my Shahai (Photo with accompanying haiku). Maybe other stuff depending on what communities I find there.

Any suggestions of what Pixelfied instance would be good?

#俳句 #川柳

ivan18rod,

@NaraMoore, I would not do Pixelfed.social as I have heard it is a lot like Mastodon.social. I would look at https://pixelfed.org/servers for a list of servers.

ivan18rod,

@NaraMoore 🤔 IDK what to tell you in that case. I know @chikorita157 has https://usuzakuraya.us, but he made it his own instance.

ivan18rod,

@chikorita157 @NaraMoore, how many mods and users does that instance have?

I have been using the term lately to describe downfall, but it's happening to all centralized platforms lately because the era of easy money is coming to an end with interest rates raising. It's a term coined by Cory Doctorow. He describes it as this:

Here is how platforms die: first, they are good to their users; then they abuse their users to make things better for their business customers; finally, they abuse those business customers to claw back all the value for themselves. Then, they die.

I call this enshittification, and it is a seemingly inevitable"consequence arising from the combination of the ease of changing how a platform allocates value, combined with the nature of a “two sided market,” where a platform sits between buyers and sellers, hold each hostage to the other, raking off an ever-larger share of the value that passes between them.
Source

Can the Fediverse be "enshittified." The answer is no as there is no profit motive if you use open source software that uses ActivityPub like Mastodon, Misskey, Akkoma, Calckey, Pixelfed, etc. Servers are run by users or organizations, usually without a profit motive. Most of them receive funding through donations. If one server decides to go to crap or plans to shut down, you can always move to another server. This is why the ActivityPub powered Fediverse can never be enshittified unlike corporate, centralized platforms that are unlikely to turn a profit.

@chikorita157, that is if Mastodon gGmbH doesn't continue centralize the fediverse: https://urusai.social/@ivan18rod/110515024557466453

I think I know what will be rebranded as, but I could be wrong. I may have figured it out because I just had a dream where I was looking at the new UI, and I think I saw the new logo on it.

I think the new name will be FlyKey.

If I do get this wrong, I will delete this post.

ivan18rod,

@kainoa, I'm giving the Calckey rebrand guess another shot. ☝️

Question for you, my fedizen friends...

Is Lemmy good enough to replace daily reddit usage without frustration?

I almost exclusively browse r/all and comment very little. I just want a news feed that is not overloaded with niche topics.

Someone convince me to ditch Reddit

EDIT: The verdict seems to be "no"

ivan18rod,

@neatchee Lemmy still has a few road blocks ahead of it.

@sakurajima I would reply there, but since I don't have a WP account, I'll just reply to this post:

The entire situation is jaw-dropping. I wonder if these meltdowns are companies realized that the fediverse is a competitor to centralized platforms.

ivan18rod,

@chikorita157 I don't see the justification to register there; I probably won't use it much TBH.

It's only half way of 2023 and well, centralized platforms are pretty much going through the process. Here is a summary.

  • - Banning NSFW and deleting anonymous images after a certain period of time
  • - Putting up advertising rules to limit sponsors and kill charity/esports events, before walking that back
  • - The usual decline like the Titanic, too many things to list here.
  • - Overcharging for the API to ridiculous levels to kill off third party apps and alienating (literally) their users
  • - Banning password sharing, unless you pay extra for the privilege of doing so.
  • - Forcing usernames

These are the ones that came on top of my head.

ivan18rod,

@chikorita157 What about YouTube or Facebook/Meta?

ivan18rod,

@chikorita157 I think YT has already been ensh*ttified by its opaque algorithm. I think that's why PeerTube was founded, and I know that's why many educational content creators (with the help of a different company) created Nebula.

The Press really doesn't understand the Fediverse, nor how decentralized social media works -- at all.

Take this article from the BBC. They call 's P92 a potential "greater rival to Bluesky or Mastodon."

No, P92 is joining the same social network that Mastodon is on -- which is called the Fediverse, tied together by a protocol called ActivityPub.

P92 and Mastodon are just two software currently in use with the Fediverse. Right now, I am using Pleroma, which uses ActivityPub. Other times, I'm using Calckey, Friendica, Pixelfed, etc. -- all which use ActivityPub.

And the rival isn't Bluesky. It's AT protocol, which Bluesky would use for their own version of the Fediverse -- but which hasn't happened yet because they're years behind ActivityPub.

You see, with open protocols, having to start "afresh" and "rebuild a community" will be a thing of the past.

Please boost :boost_requested:

As part of a wave of layoffs, I got laid off from my backend development job last month as the company's financials I was working with have been steadily decreasing. I applied for another job shortly after, and after a month of interviews and an honestly great response from their team, at the last minute, they told me that they were focusing their hiring efforts away from the US and towards Singapore. With Calckey donations, I don't have enough money to pay for rent or groceries. So I'm asking to , I'm the lead developer on the Calckey project, and I'm a fullstack, multi-language developer. I have 3+ years of enterprise experience, and I work great on teams as well as solo. Resume and references available upon request.

ivan18rod,

@kainoa Can you send me your resume via Matrix? Depending on what languages/frameworks you are familiar with, I could do some looking for you.
