Programmer by day, thinks about old games a bit too much by night by making videos on them.

Existentially tired and here for interesting games talk, and not quick dunks or s*itposting.

It's a new !

When you think of cheerful budget blasters for the , Oh No! is probably not what comes to mind.

But Sensible's (unofficial) take on Rip Off happens to be both frenetic and friendly to players at the same time!

Time for a new !

I may not have grown up with them, but 's 8-bit line of micros has a lot of neat games, even if they weren't the first pick for a lot of the 8-bit era.

And seeing there's that new mini hitting the market which might bring some new folks to the fold - here's a selection of games "I Just Think Are Neat", but also don't rely on loads of key controls.

@craiggrannell I'll admit, I'm pretty rubbish at it as well. But I'm not going for showcasing 1337 strategies, just some fun titles that I enjoy.

A shame indeed that he had to cut that many out - kind wish they'd been added, if only to include some balance to the challenge as well 😁

robc,
@robc@mastodon.social avatar

@craiggrannell Of course, the curse of the cart!

I've got US Gold's import tape release here - and I forgot that Synapse did carts over in the States for a bunch of their games. But yeah, it's certainly been a while since I cleared L1, so the extras would probably be wasted on me too :)

New Time!

We've been waiting a heck of a time for it, but Llamasoft: The Jeff Minter Story is finally here, and yes, I had to do a bit of a deep-dive to see if the latest @DigitalEclipse documentary makes for a fun, fluffy and zappy exploration of the early @llamasoft_ox years.

(Obviously the answer is it does. But y'know. Watch to vid to see how <3)

And that nonsense about printing fancy shit on the tapes.

New Time!

Deadly Skies (aka Airforce Delta Storm) takes the air combat action you'd expect from its console counterparts, and squeezes it into your GBA in such a way as to keep the high flying thrills intact.

Even played from an overhead view!

It's the LAST for the year - and it's back to a big cross-platform comparison featuring the game which show what happens when you take a sci-fi wargame, and combine it with some Spacewar-esque action.

Yes, it’s Star Control - focusing specifically on the , , (or ) and versions.

(I don't have an era equivalent PC to capture it off for real hardware purposes).

It's a new and this time (in lieu of a larger edit which some other things got in the way of), I look at Lunaris, a (relatively) modern release which takes the Gravity Shooter formula and ponders enough changes (and orbs) to make for a unique experience, in an under-represented genre on the Rubber Keyed Beast.

Time for a new !

For a machine not really known for its racers, Super Monza GP certainly showed that the humble could handle a great one, despite a few limits.

It's now time for Super Monza GP 2 to take to the track, and see whether extra features are enough to take first place once again!

If I wanted to get an 8-bit what would be the best one?

Is there any practical difference with the XE machines (I like how they look)?

I live in the UK, do I need to get a PAL machine?

I look now and again but always stop short of buying because I don't know WHAT I'm buying :D

robc,
@robc@mastodon.social avatar

@nivrig the best all rounder would be an 800XL - the downside is that you’d need a RAM upgrade for modern games.

The 130XE is enough but its keyboard is TRASH.

Other than RAM, the XLs and XEs are the same machine. The OG 400/800 had a slightly different OS that leads to incompatibilities on some programs.

And you’d probably want a PAL machine - most modern dev is out of Eastern Europe:)

robc,
@robc@mastodon.social avatar

@nivrig For the XL's, there's SYS-CHECK, but it's an external board which connects to the connector on the back.

There's the Ultimate 1mb for the 400/800 which does need a bit of work IIRC (but is internal).

Only used XL/XE's myself (and FWIW, a 130XE is my main one, only 'cause my 800XL is due a RAM replacement), so don't know much more for the earlier ones.

One more bit of fun for this 10 years of video making malarkey!

It's stream time, and I've made a list of 100 C64 games I've covered over the years (good and bad), and fed them into a randomiser.

Let's see what it challenges me to explore again! ❤️

Time for a new - and this one? It's special - double milestone special!

Not only is it episode 100, but it's also 10 years since I started making videos about old games, and it feels apt to cover not only an awesome game, but one which kind of served the first step towards me doing videos.

None other than a GOAT of an arcade to home translation with none other than @llamasoft_ox's LEGENDARY Tempest 2000.

Rendered out the first pass of 100, and next is to proof it.

If all goes well, that'll be going up for early next week which just so happens to be the 10th anniversary of when I started making videos about old games.

Also making plans for a special stream next week to celebrate too.

So keep an eye out on that too!

New time - and it's a look at The Making of Karateka.

Which isn't just about a modern way to play @jmechner's classic, but a natural way to truly get into the details about how this classic came together.

@DigitalEclipse's Gold Master Series is off to a damn great start, and I can't wait for many more to come!

Magnetron for is a shooter which has both an interesting background, and a bit of a reputation.

And whilst not a classic, certainly doesn't deserve said reputation.

After grabbing some footage earlier, I loaded a bunch of random games, and this one - having sat through the C64’s ROM tape routines, then spat out this message before starting.

If that ain’t a 1984 style startup, I don’t know what is! 😉
