What's blowing me away about this Google AI search thing is that they 100% red-teamed this internally, found a bunch of bullshit like we're finding, and somebody decided to ship it anyway.

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@mattmay i think this is a feature design problem -- somebody said, let's build an AI that overviews the google results you get, and nobody stopped to think why that was a bad idea. even once they saw it. lol. and, yet, that's not even quite true -- they do block some stuff, so they knew it was a problem, but shipped it anyway. for what it's worth, they could solve this with design, "the internet says… " would be a good start. haha

I'm kind of disappointed that the NCAA back pay settlement for D1 athletes only goes back to 2016 -- was my back of the pack performance in D1 track and cc in 2003 worth NOTHING??

Our second panel of the day is all about AI and teams. The panel features Susan Campbell, Marine Carpuat, Stephanie Valencia, and Susannah Paletz. To read more about the work on teams and organizations, check out OTTRS: https://ottrs.ischool.umd.edu #hcil2024

@bwaber @andresmh @susannahpaletz @hcil_umd @merrie @juhokim @msbernst you're right, except, we are contending with lots of framing of AI as partners/collaborators/etc, i agree the tool framing is best … also, hey my former student Stephanie was on that panel!

i talked to a friend who was like, "i have a chip startup", and since it's pittsburgh i had to confirm whether silicon or potato. but, it was silicon. and, i was like, you can just like do that? i'm very software silo'd.

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@marcua i hope so, then you could say, unlike nvidia, you get all that GPU and a bag of chips!

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@wollman @marcua that sounds like a great opportunity! people will endlessly compete and eventually tire on GPUs, but people are gonna need potato chips forever!

I don’t glory in “no sleep til dub dub,” but also, for some of us, it’s definitely real. The amount of work at this time of year is truly staggering. It’s one of the things that brought me back to this company. It reminds me of putting on a show (and I guess in some ways it is)…everyone is coming together to create something bigger than the sum of us. It’s exiting! And exhausting! 💜

the nice thing about ML alignment is once you know your problem, who your thing is for, what context it'll be used in… ML alignment can a/b test the shit out of optimizing your thing for those things

I’m thinking of putting out a yearly report on my toddler, modeled after these LLM expert papers — like there will be a chart on the delta of her math performance from year 3 to year 4, some dubious comparison to gpt4, etc… this is a good idea right?

Well, this will be an interesting way to throw away money. :-) I decided to invest (a small amount) in kagi.com - the search engine I've been using since last year.

I remain very happy having switched, but I still !g (have it direct to google) for geo-related queries, something I hope they'll improve upon in the longer term. I love that I can downrank specific sites like pinterest or geeksforgeeks that annoy the hell out of me.

Most early-stage investments lose, but I'm intrigued to watch. 🤓

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@dave_andersen and, if the whole subscription-based small search thing doesn't work out, they can always sell their index to an AI wannabe! :)

jbigham,
@jbigham@hci.social avatar

@dave_andersen but, they'd have to grow really big right? i feel like i heard that one reason why macs had so many fewer viruses traditionally is because they were second in the market and so who would bother! (and of course much more secure better products ;P)

jbigham,
