@jhooper -- In my 40's, I had a coworker about the same age and he was a major asshole. He had a tendency to make backhanded compliments and such. I once asked him how he got to his age with all his teeth, and when he found out I was a martial artist, his comments became more careful and polite.
Be fair and kind, but take no bullshit. The reason people are shitty on the internet and on the phone is because they won't suffer the consequences of saying those things face to face.
I don't know how else to say it...
You have to eat less meat, shop/spend less, and drive less.
That is how you can individually help the planet.
That sounds like a crap life, but only if your happiness is tied up with material goods.

If you could always exercise your conscience and walk away from a job that was asking you to do something illegal, without losing your access to food, shelter, and healthcare, how many crimes do you think the corporations would get away with?

I went to visit my dying friend and didn't have the money to do it and got ZERO donations.
I'll figure it out like I always do...
But I've already been down to one meal a day, so I have to skip eating or economize even more on my food/meals.
Geezus, there are too many idiots in power that haven't read anything about social disorder. When you very visually destroy a mostly peaceful collection of protests simply asking that their tuition be invested in a manner that doesn't support the killing of innocent people, you stir the moral outrage of even more people. There are a few (two IIRC) that negotiated and had the students all go home.
There is an obvious correct and safe way to work through this protest and then there is tyranny.
And before the, "but what about"-isms that I know are coming...
There was no violence and there was no nationwide college protest until AFTER the first one was under threat of being broken up USING VIOLENCE.
That is when every college flared up.
Then THEY USE VIOLENCE to put down a few of them...
This is how the escalation happens. Like I said, there are too many idiots in power that haven't read anything about social disorder.
But those students did their reading and studied up.
