People familiar with the hostage negotiations say that it's Egyptian intelligence that changed the terms of the ceasefire proposal without telling anyone, leading Hamas to announce it was agreeing to a deal that didn't in fact exist (said deal would allow Hamas to return dead bodies instead of live hostages). https://edition.cnn.com/2024/05/21/politics/sources-say-they-were-duped-by-egypt-changing-ceasefire-terms-for-hamas/index.html

@Alon What. the fuck.

@Alon Sorry, but I'm still thinking about this: in WHAT WORLD did even the people who lead negotiations for Hamas, individuals not known for their connection with either reality or morality, think 'oh, sure, Israel would be totally cool with us returning dead people rather than living people.'

Let us all celebrate the death anniversary of Christopher Columbus, a man who was such an asshole he was jailed for mistreating Native Americans in the 15th century.

Work is paying, so I ordered an Arnold Palmer with lunch to confirm that I still don't like Arnold Palmers.

I guess I was just looking for a way out from PhD. You know, the PhD that was my dream job. That I was loving so much I was lamenting how quickly the time was going. The one I now can’t bear the thought of

@purplepadma I'm so sorry. PhD programs are absolute psychological destruction, and no one tells you that before you do one, only after you're experiencing it. So in case you're worried it's you: it's not. It's the system.

    @divya No worries! It would have been awesome if true; it's pretty great as a joke.

    Free Book of the Week on Apple Books UK.

    A Witch in Time by Constance Sayers.

    Helen Lambert, freshly divorced from Roger, meets Luke Varner for the first time on a blind date in 2012. Or so she thinks until Luke informs her that they've met before: in France in 1895, then California in 1935, and New Mexico in 1970…

    Charlie would like you to contact his LAWYERS because he was kept out of the bathroom this morning while his mama was showering, which is clearly a HATE CRIME.

    I'm trying to find a good non-paywalled source, but it sounds like it will now be the case in the US that coal power plants have to either close down or capture most of their CO2 (lol) in the next 10ish years?

    If this happens, this seems like pretty good news. The two biggest climate change issues are transportation and fossil fuel based electricity. Closing coal (and natural gas) power plants is harder for individuals to influence politically but it's just as important

    I'm pretty baffled by the people who leave negative reviews on litter boxes being like 'my cat wouldn't use it!' Have you met cats?

    I don't understand how in the Year of Our Lord 2024 [sic] anyone thinks pointing out the right's hypocrisy will mean anything to them. It was never about ideological consistency. It is always about power.

    If you are reacting to the Penguin/DOJ case, as someone pointed out elsewhere: don't believe what a corporation says in an antitrust hearing about being Just A Smol Little Guy. They are massively incentivized to act like they are less successful than they are.

    Also also, maybe don't trust a viral piece of commentary about books and publishing that mentions the concept of a 'Netflix of books' and doesn't once mention libraries (if you know, you know).
