Wednesday next week (June 5th) at 9:00am pacific, @andypiper and I are going to host another Fediverse Developer Network meetup.

You are all invited, particularly if you are a developer new to ActivityPub and the fediverse, or if you have an existing implementation and are interested in the first round of test results from https://feditest.org/

Details are on https://fedidevs.org

"Well shit, we just need to blog more".

The Verge on why they redesigned their site in 2022. And that was before the Twitter takeover!

Ghost has a (pretty funny) update on their development.

The fediverse is like a startup in many ways.

Some days you are totally elated about all the amazing things that are becoming possible and within reach. We are changing the world!

Some other days you are in the depth of despair that this is never going to work and how could you possibly ever have thought otherwise.

This week definitely is the former. A movement is forming, good people are coming out of hiding and are getting excited and involved. So glad to be part of it!!

I have a 3D avatar that's connected to the Fediverse!

HTC's Viviverse virtual world turned on their Fediverse connection yesterday I think.

This is actually major news. HTC is a major company!!

Say Hi to @j12t from Mastodon or some other Fedivesre application (not Threads yet)

I am glad smart quotes has been enabled on @threads! I believe @joinmastodon is working on implementing this too, although I am not sure when it will be available.

RE: https://www.threads.net/

johannes.ernst,

How would one express this over ActivityPub?

FediTest, the test framework and test suite for the , is progressing. Major update this week.

And then you go through the ActivityStreams standard (which is one of the standards the is built on) and find your own name in the Acknowledgements section.

Among what looks like 1000 other people. But nevertheless ...

This @verge article points out that many would-be Twitter alternatives have gone down, but the ones still standing all connect to the fediverse. Hmm, I sense a pattern?

There were 3 sessions on the at Internet Identity Workshop this week. 2 by me, on Identity in the Fediverse and on FediTest, and one by dmitri@social.coop on Data Portability.

To my surprise, many attendees were not or only very marginally aware of the Fediverse. And this is a highly technical adjacent community and was actually one of the roots of decentralized social back 15+ years ago.

We need to communicate what it is and why it matters much more broadly than we have so far.

Talking about FediTest and Fediverse testing @feditest at Internet Identity Workshop today. Thanks @kudrix for the photo! iiw

Kudos to @timothyjchambers who is encouraging so many Threads users to turn on fediverse sharing.

EU legislation is working. More people use web browsers that aren’t market leaders.

Active measures and disinformation are out in full force.

Remember: don't believe anything you read on social media, and don't believe any photos or videos either unless it's extremely well sourced.

What about an IIW session next week where we remind each other what we wanted the to be ≈15 years ago before the big platforms took over and it all became non-viable since?

Which parts of the vision are again relevant and can we make them happen this time around now that we have a resurgence of the ?

johannes.ernst, to random

There are 17 people on the W3C’s Social Web Incubator Community Group today, and the discussion is mostly about active work documenting things such as WebFinger use and Http Signatures use with ActivityPub.

I’m so happy about this. The fediverse can only thrive if the underlying standards are actively maintained, and now things are actually moving. Took a bunch of work by a bunch of people, but here we are. Onwards!

This is a serious allegation.

people you need to get the executives under control, otherwise all the goodwill you are putting into this project is for nought.

Hey @threads, consider adding a rel=http://webfinger.net/rel/profile-page entry to your WebFinger. It makes it easier to find human-readable profile pages from a fediverse handle. The profile URL that goes with a handle is hardly secret.

Use case: create clickable links from handles as we do on FediForum.org E.g. We can easily link to https://social.coop/@J12t given @j12t, but need to write Threads-specific code to do so to, say, https://www.threads.net/@pcottle from @pcottle .

johannes.ernst,

No # as I understand it. There are some examples here for comparison: https://fedidevs.org/reference/webfinger/

johannes.ernst,

I don't think so. rfc7033#section-4.4.4 says "URI link relation type values are compared using the "Simple String Comparison" algorithm", but these two URLs aren't the same according to that algorithm, which does not include HTTP GET operations.

I started a thread over at https://matrix.to/#/!uHqAjmOtrLtidOiczC:matrix.org/$W55eqLnnuEhxfxZqB7J1U7lLkKYGjO3UzHZmW1kOMiA where one person so far has agreed with me :-)
