“I thought the Pro apps on the iPad Pro would materialize after i bought it”

“I thought I'd actually use this very expensive exercise bike I bought”

I hereby trademark the term:

"Exercise bike for the mind”.

@schwa Gold. I really only have 1 or 2 occasional things I reach for a Mac for when I’m on the road. Everything else is better on iPad. So I use Screens most of the time and my 16-inch Pro sits at home unless it’s “one of those days” where it’s a laptop heavy task day (usually low level network engineering work). Great balance I reckon. Would I welcome a hypervisor on the Pro to make even more work there however? 1000%.

@schwa Nice. I’m close on some days! I’d be very happy if Apple extended just the Pro line to support some more Pro industries (see previous comment re: hyper visors). But I agree buying it without eyes open and expecting change is silly. As I said - there’s enough things I prefer on iPad that I happily own both.

Who had “Apple made a thinner iPad Pro so that your accessories no longer work” in their Apple event bingo card?

I fucking did. 5.1mm vs 5.3mm is idiotic.

I’m going to ride my current iPad Pro until it dies.

@schwa No reason to upgrade any 2018+ Pro unless WWDC unlocks hypervisors etc. Also, this is a more legit change to new KB with function row etc. Worst time was when the M1 12.9 didn’t fit the case of previous one but the 11-inch did.

@schwa I guess it’s similar to how we buy a new kb each time we buy a new MacBook. 🤷‍♂️ every 3-4 years it’s fine if you view it as one purchase. My wife is still perfectly happy with a 2018 11-inch Pro. Still forsee no reason to update it and won’t begrudge getting a new KB when she does.

If I ever switch away from using an iPhone, it would cause a massive cascading
effect on nearly every part of my digital (and some physical) life.

Simply because, if I could ever bring myself to break out of Apple's walled
garden, I would want to steer clear of anything similar. I wouldn't want to just
replace everything Apple with everything Google, for example.

And yet, as much as I can imagine this would be hard work, I wouldn't say it's ... https://chrishannah.me/micro/2024-04-26-00-30

@chrishannah The only thing really locking me to iOS is iMessage. Whilst there are other apps I love, and I have no beef with iPhone itself (and don’t thin I’d choose anything else anyway as long as iPhone is so good), only iMessage would be a “problem” to move away from.

Internet Recovery is going to take 11 minutes to start. God the late-era Intel Macs are such garbage. And yet I cannot quite justify getting my mom a new laptop when she uses an iPad more and has barely used this one over the last 5 years.

@film_girl pretty sure that progress bar is based on the download speed of the network more than anything else.

john,

@film_girl Sure - but think of how hard Apple’s CDN is hit this time of year. ;)

Do any electronics buffs know how/if I could buy a small number of very small, custom color e-ink displays somewhere? Is there any company that let's you specify desired dimensions of the display?

john,
@john@cleary.au avatar

@danielpunkass I’d reach out to the suppliers on AliExpress.

I am begging Apple PR to understand that absolutely nobody is insane enough to put a fucking iMac on a kitchen island while you are cooking. end the madness

@sdw I’ve seen it IRL.
