Hi everyone. I don’t have ADHD, but someone who joined my family some time ago does (we’ll call him T), and is currently going through some trouble which I find quite perplexing....
Apart from the ADHD, it sounds like it’s time for T to get a lawyer who specializes in child custody issues, and preferably a lawyer who is not afraid to go to court. My wife’s first lawyer presented himself as someone who wanted to work hard to avoid court and resolve things through negotiations that reached a mutually acceptable solution. That’s all well and good if everyone’s trying to work towards a good solution, but her ex-husband was ready to burn it all down because she dared to leave him and that first lawyer was almost a liability in the courtroom even with things that should’ve clearly gone her way. Her new lawyer is a fighter and is able to shut down any crap the ex-husband tries to pull now, and he hasn’t tried anything in a couple years.
Unfortunately, a lawyer like that doesn’t come cheap. You can help lower costs some by trying to do as much as you can gathering and organizing evidence so when you meet with the attorney they don’t have to spend as much time doing that. Most of the evidence gathering falls on the client anyway. The attorney should be able to give guidance on what that evidence should be and how to organize it. You’ll probably want at least 3 copies of everything and have it in binders when going to court or some other meeting that needs evidence. And evidence is key with all of this; he can’t just say the kids were with their mom when they missed school, he’ll need to have papers showing the custody schedule and papers showing their attendance.
All of this sounds like it will be a challenge for T, both financially and organizationally. He will have to find a way for the sake of his girls, and will probably need as much help as you and your family can give him. If the ex-wife is trying to prevent the girls from getting treated for their ADHD that could have bad effects for the girls both short- and long-term. Courts and social services generally take a negative view on obstructing treatment, but T will have to prove that’s happening. And it sounds like the mom has tried to weaponize social services against him. He can succeed in fighting against it but will need to do a lot of work.
This might become the most important fight of his life.
English is my native language. I’m reasonably fluent in some parts of life in French but I feel like if I were to try to have a deeper conversation about something like emotions I would struggle to find the right words. Is that kind of what makes it easier for you non-native speakers that are identifying with this post?
I’m 40 and just started medication for ADHD. When I was in school there were some kids diagnosed with it, but they were the kids bouncing off the wall. I was just told I was a daydreamer, lacked concentration, just needed to focus more because I had so much potential if I could do the work. Instead I just skated by as a B student largely on testing well, but not turning things in. That’s not to say you do or don’t have it, just don’t assume you don’t have it because no one ever mentioned it when you were young.
It looks like they’re releasing a sequel soon, so I’m guessing that’s why it’s free right now. Not the first game on the Mac I have that became unplayable fairly quickly after release. Actually, looking at the release date of 2021 for the game, it was never playable except on older Macs, because macOS Catalina (10.15) was released in 2019 and was the first version of macOS to not support 32-bit applications. So the game was already 2 years out of date.

I think that’s a strong point, especially when you look at devices like smart speakers with voice assistants or TV steaming sticks. Those devices should not be $30. If you consider a 3x markup over the cost of parts to be a pretty standard rule of thumb to remain profitable for a consumer electronic product those devices should be a lot closer to $100. When they’re not it should be raising red flags about the company using information gathered from you to make their profits.
I suppose there’s no guarantee that Apple isn’t also collecting that data, but the pricing on those devices in a competitive market seems a lot more consistent with a company that needs a product to make a profit in a more traditional manner. Of course, they take a cut on subscriptions sold through the device, but I suspect that’s not as reliable per-device as a game console collecting a license fee for every device sold.
I was thinking about how I missed having an indoor thermometer that measures humidity. It’s such a small specific thing, one I’d never think of getting unless pushed to it (which I was by one particularly dry winter). But I like having one now....
Is there a specific model you’re talking about? I’m getting a lot of different results searching online and I’m not sure they’re the same. I’m not a fan of the can opener my wife has, though; its cuts are jagged and uneven and sometimes gets the outside dipping into the food.

He seemed emotional at the end of his performance and I read about how the performance was dedicated to his late father and how he’d promised his dad he’d sing on the Eurovision stage someday. Was he supposed to not be filmed there so he could have a private space for those emotions? Because that would be really awful if the TV crew was insisting on recording that private moment.

Yes, if only because the Peacock app is hit or miss for me depending on the device. It’s good on Xbox but I also have my Xbox on a 4K TV with a soundbar. We don’t really have seating for the people coming to watch in that room today, though. The TV downstairs where we have room is on an Apple TV and the Peacock app specifically seems to be sending channel 1 and 2 of the 5.1 mix to the TV’s stereo speakers instead of the stereo mix, so the vocals are almost inaudible. Peacock is the only app doing this. I forced the Apple TV audio settings to stereo instead of auto, but it seems like it’s making a stereo mix out of the 5.1 mix instead so while it’s improved, it’s still not great. The Peacock app also randomly stops letting us rewind or fast forward, only allowing us to restart the program, change subtitles, or view additional info. I have to back out of the stream and then resume from last watch to rewind or fast forward. Peacock is the only app where I have this problem. I’m debating switching to an old Roku but I think I’ll just move the Xbox and soundbar downstairs because I know it will sound better. Maybe use the Roku with the soundbar but then I’ll be relying on WiFi.
UPDATE: Keeping the Apple TV forced to stereo and using the soundbar seems adequate. Still not sure if Peacock is giving the official stereo mix or the Apple TV is having to force one out of the 5.1 mix, but I’m still confident this is ultimately Peacock delivering the stream wrong.
Can I sue a company for inadequate data protections if my data is breached? I assume I would have to prove damages, and maybe that becomes harder if I can’t tie the victimization to a specific breach. And probably the terms of service make it harder, like I might have to use arbitration and can’t join a class action suit.
