My current workflow includes using a #windows Virtual Machine for the sole purpose of running #Microsoft Office and #OneDrive , and this clunky solution is still leagues better than actually running Windows on nearly every measure.
The pain the limited time I spend in that wee VM window underscores how bad Windows has gotten over the years.
@mpjgregoire LibreOffice is 99.99% of the way there on compatibility for my purposes. The track changes, citations, and layout are totally cross-compatible, but equations have been getting mangled between the two.
I thought I heard that OneDrive for linux was mothballed a while ago, but I'll give it a second look! I'd have to keep the VM for other things, but it'd still help.
What the Victoria Bridge in #montreal looked like in 1859 vs. 2009. Turns out the bridge was once a tubular bridge made of prefabbed iron sections built in the UK.
Elections Quebec is scrapping it's pilot programme for online municipal elections.
I haven't a clue the number of times experts like @mattblaze need to outline the dangers and risks of internet-based elections before policy makers get the message.
I'm happy they came to the right conclusion, but it beggars belief how they ever thought it was viable.
Everything on the #IndieWeb wiki looks insanely cool, and there is a lot of documentation, but am I the only one who hasn't a clue how to adopt 99% of what is on there?
#ActivityPub and #Fedi might be hard for folks to grok at first, but the on-ramp for #WebMentions for me looks like the Cliff's of Dover.
That said, I am acknowledging that plenty of folks are using IndieWeb to make truly insane things. I just want in! :P
@jszym Here you can see how I added #indieweb properties/functionality to my static site and graded my site using #indiemark. A lot of the “advanced” capabilities are either difficult to implement (especially using a static site) or poorly specified.
I wasn't too worried about the 30cm of snow that were originally forecasted, but the prospect of another Ice Storm like the one we had last spring is making me pretty down.
Already double checking my UPSs and charging my battery banks.
@jszym Not too worried about freezing rain during transition. It is to be foloowed by real rain which will melt any ice on branches quickly. (and temperatured will be well above 0.
The new @notjustbikes video on #montreal is very fair and pretty comprehensive, but despite that I have to say as a Montrealer I don't really come away with all the same conclusions.
All the facts are right, but then dubbing it "most disappointing city" and "not a great" city are pretty heartbreaking, and IMHO pretty unfair characterisations of the city.
What I see when I look at the video is the incredible speed with which Montreal is changing for the better.
@jszym I visit great cities in Europe on a regular basis. Not only are they farther ahead than Montréal, they're improving faster.
This means that the gap between them is only going to widen. That is why I do not believe that Montréal is a great city.
The "most disappointing city" was, as I stated in the video, only because the city was oversold in content I watched and read online, not because of the city itself.
Finally, when I evaluate a city, I judge what it IS, not what it MIGHT BECOME.
@jszym
I guess this is what @notjustbikes does, but from my perspective it's an excessively transportation-centric view of #Montréal. I like the bike infrastructure of the city, but what makes Montréal great is the food, the music, the festivals, the museums, the universities, the architecture.
I wish that the reviewer would come in January, then he'd have a different view of the importance of bikes, cars and transit in this climate. It's easy to criticise the Underground City in September.
I think the most unexpected thing I've learned from studying networks of protein-interactions is something called the Friendship Paradox
The major implication is that, on average, your friends are more popular than you. They also, on avg, have had more sexual partners.
If you're starting to feel personally attacked, don't worry, it's just a case of sampling bias and high-degree networks. There's a bunch of math that can explain this but it's also intuitive imho [1/2]
I always thought editing video on #linux would be awful, but I've had to film a number of screencasts over the last couple of years and @OBSProject + @kdenlive is probably the best experience I've had ever (and it's all #FLOSS ).
No more messing around with Camtasia or Premiere! It's a delight.
