Anybody have any docs or performance figures for how much CPU is "enough" for routing/firewalling a given amount of bandwidth?

My current core router (Debian box with an i3-4160 and a dual 10G NIC plus some 1G interfaces) is getting long in the tooth and doesn't have enough PCIe lanes to add all the stuff I want, so I'm planning its retirement some time later this year.

I'm targeting ~10 year lifetimes for new builds at this point, so it needs to have the oomph to last through a bunch of network upgrades.

I'm thinking I would be happy with something that could handle 40G or 100G cross-vlan traffic (plus a few hundred Mbps to/from the internet but that's negligible) in a router-on-a-stick configuration.

But I have no idea how much CPU you actually need to do this. Currently eyeing a Xeon 5416S (EDIT: or a 5415+ which is half as many cores but significantly higher Fmax) somewhat arbitrarily, but I have no idea if this is overkill or insufficient.

@azonenberg @gsuberland what, 64MB RAM and 16MB flash not enough for you??? yeah, it won’t do all that but for the static routes plus perhaps the DHCP, it’d do the trick

It’s the start of my European tour! On a ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm now. Tomorrow, it’s an MX204 install in Stockholm, then off to Hamburg to set up a new PoP. The final destination is our new edge location in Barcelona. I think I’m going to see a LOT of chargers over the next week.

Had my eardrum rupture today, bloody mess. I've clearly had a sheltered life since that was the most pain I've ever experienced. Went to urgent care (“come back tomorrow" cost 338€), the very nice super good hotel agreed to extend my stay for two more nights even though they're sold out. So I'm hanging in there.

Trying to debug why image pulls from GitHub Container Repository are slow as molasses from our Nordic servers over IPv6.

Looks like the blobs are being pulled from 2606:50c0:8000::/48 announced by Fastly, and the best path is:

6939 (Hurricane Electric, US)
7473 (Singtel, Singapore)
8966 (Etisalat, United Arab Emirates)

I’ve never been great at this, but once a year I want to boast about something I’m super proud of:

As a 1% for the Planet member, one percent of Richie’s annual sales go towards protecting the environment. Our partner of choice for this is the Finnish Natural Heritage Foundation which uses the funds to buy and conserve old-growth forests here in Finland.

Was looking at the Telo MT1 and it occurs to me that down the road, EVs will just be easier to make, by orders of magnitude, than ICE cars. And that explains how these startups can possibly succeed?

The battery backed part of my home network now:
• MikroTik CRS309 switch/router with optics in all 8 10G ports
• Ubiquiti U6-Lite WiFi 6 access point
• Hue Bridge
• RPi 4B 8GB running UniFi console
• Pentium Silver N6000 mini PC with a 4TB enterprise SSD (with power loss protection), running streaming backups from 20 different Postgres instances and periodically backing up 200 GitHub repositories
• Wi-Tek Solar UPS PoE switch powering all these devices over PoE with a 50Ah 12V LiFePo4 battery

So Google is investing an additional €1 billion into their $3.5B Hamina, Finland data center. The facility will use so much electricity that after the investment, the whole city of Hamina can be heated by the waste heat alone.

It’s not a surprise that the government is hailing this as a huge win and “primarily a significant climate action”. Consuming all those megawatts is significant alright, but maybe not in the way the government talking points imply…

Probably good to know that zeroize doesn't actually, you know, zeroize.
