New toys day. Sadly the bike these are meant for is getting frame repair done. I suppose I could put them on the commuter cyclo for a test drive, though.

Logged in to Stack Overflow for the first time in 10 years to check exactly what have I left there.. Now, since the few answers I've given are CC-BY, so they must attribute them to me, if I make a GDPR data subject request for them to delete all my data, logic dictates that whatever they think about text as personal data, they must delete the answers, because they can't attribute them to me as a deleted account. Right?

osma,
@osma@mas.to avatar

Ah, cute. Stack Overflow's GDPR data subject request form does not work if your browser has an ad blocker active (I think tha's why?) -- there's a badly integrated CAPTCHA at the end of the form which prevents the form from being submitted.

Now, Quora. I haven't posted anything there in 8 years, and very little before that. If I just delete my account, do the posts also get deleted, or do I take the Data Subject Request route there as well?

“Petrostates are perfecting a sinister COP playbook,” said Patrick Galey, a fossil fuel investigator with Global Witness, a human rights NGO. “Just like the UAE, Azerbaijan is planning a massive increase in gas production. Just like the UAE, Azerbaijan plans to legitimize its authoritarian regime by hosting these global talks. And just like the UAE, Azerbaijan appears set to use COP to develop its international business ties."

I'm surprisingly disappointed to find out that Stack Overflow wasn't taking a stand against lazy, truthy auto-generated LLM output in order to give humans better answers and prevent the proliferation of unhelpful noise on the internet, but was instead doing it in order to sell training data free of AI-generated content.

Surprising, because it seemed evident from the beginning this was the reason.

Suomen suhde Eurooppaan on jännä. Ennen vanhaan Eurooppa edusti jotain ylempää, sivistystä sun muuta (ne osaavat siellä sujuvasti vieraita kieliäkin!) - välillä toki muitakin "aatteita". On Thursday #Russia will celebrate Victory Day, its commemoration of the defeat of #Nazi #Germany in 1945. Domestically, this is nostalgia. In the 1970s, Soviet leader Leonid #Brezhnev created a cult of victory. Russia under #Putin has continued the tradition.

Abroad, this is intimidation. We are meant to think that Russia cannot lose.

Russia can lose. And it should lose, for the sake of the world — and for its own sake.

Memory errors in consumer devices such as PCs and phones are not something you hear much about, yet they are probably one of the most common ways these machines fail.

I'll use this thread to explain how this happens, how it affects you and what you can do about it. But I'll also talk about how the industry failed to address it and how we must force them to, for the sake of sustainability. 🧵 1/17

Thanks for an interesting thread! It brought back memories from 90s computing that was full of repeatedly running memory checkers and reseating chips - and how that taught me for a while to only accept motherboards which supported ECC memory. Indeed no longer an option available for our devices.

When I finally pull the trigger, a new 13" iPad Pro w/ 16GB RAM, keyboard & stylus is gonna cost me €3,107. It would be by far the most powerful computer I own.

That's more than twice as much as what I paid for the Mac mini I do all my development on. It even beats out my high-end gaming PC whose GPU alone was €1800.

All of that goes to waste because it’s paired with a simplified, stripped-down OS using the same technology stack and limitations as a $300 Netflix device for your grandparents

osma,
@osma@mas.to avatar

@stroughtonsmith
The only credible argument I see for not allowing macOS on iPad is that the legacy files and folders data management approach really, really, needs to die and be replaced with an object-based, searchable and metadata-rich system for good. Apple has all the assets to execute on that, but i(Pad)OS misses the solution for cross-app data exchange.

An operating system with all the user interface capabilities of the desktop, but without the Finder? That'd be gold.

Autocratic regimes are finding that instead of further repressing their own populations, it's easier to sow disinformation, distrust and dissent to poison liberal democracies, where there are plenty of those willing to profit from spreading their propaganda, and lack of those ready to fight against it.

US Air Force is buying add-on seekers designed to give JDAM-ER glide bombs supplied to Ukraine the ability to zero in on GPS jammers. This would turn one of the weapons most impacted by this countermeasure into one used to directly attack it.

Yep. Kind of like AGM-88 HARM, except optimized to home on 1575 and 1227 MHz radio noise instead of a typical directional radar signal.

Little difference between JDAM and SDB beyond size of the warhead. SDB (thus also GLSDB) being 110 kg while JDAM is 230 to 910 kg. I can see no particular reason why a similar seeker head couldn't be used on the (GL)SDB as well.

A ground based GPS jammer doesn't have beyond-the-horizon reach (well, apart from the missile/glide bomb being above the horizon). Kaliningrad can disrupt positioning on the southern Baltic Sea, and effects on the eastern Ukraine battlefield must be produced by local EW systems.

Besides, Ukraine hitting a military target even on russian territory is not escalation, but defense.

I hadn't realized that a sodium cooled reactor could use the sodium as a heat store to modulate its electrical output to market demand, while still having the reactor running at full power. But apparently that's what the TerraPower design is supposed to do. Now, you could of course place any kind of heat battery between the reactor primary circuit and the turbine secondary circuit, but efficiency matters.
