Apple Vision Pro might go on your head, but it won’t replace your hat.

@gruber That piece is so awful. “Everyone agrees it’s a TV”? I am interested in one because it will give me back lab bench space but let me have more monitors (and I can use a virtual logic analyzer!).

New bollards at the Walnut Street Apple Store.

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

@gruber @lane There was an epidemic of it in Britain in the 1990s (we called it “ram raiding”) and bollards went up in front of many shops. These days we are installing bollards to stop terrorists driving into pedestrians.

Just listened to an upcoming podcast of me talking about , cars, security, etc. I hate listening to my own voice, but pro tip: at 2x it’s no problem (and the review process takes half the time).

I’m looking for a catch with the new Volvo EX30 EV and I can’t find one. It looks like a de facto EV hot hatch for the price of a petrol hot hatch. https://www.volvocars.com/uk/cars/ex30-electric/

@Pingu I think it’s a Geely platform (not sure if CEVT did all the development).

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

@Pingu Smart is a joint venture between Geely and Mercedes. Geely also owns 10% of Daimler, the holding company of Mercedes.

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

@pjakobs @Pingu That’s not what’s happening at Volvo: all the design engineering is in Göteborg. The supply chain is global, and the assembly can be done anywhere (as Brexiters are discovering in the Find Out phase of their project).

At an agribusiness open day in Cambridgeshire and it’s fascinating. They have a Liz Truss simulator!

Still trying to work out a use case, apart from gaming, for this. Let alone a sizeable market. Maybe it’s “because Apple made it”, a bit like why would anyone currently buy a BMW (who has eyes)?

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

@CrackedWindscreen @thejapantimes I would definitely use it for work. So many displays, frees up a lot of space, makes context switching much easier (multiple reference manuals, code editor, logic analyzer window, plus usual web etc). The only issue is the keyboard, and since I can touch type, it’s possible that can be virtual too.

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

@CrackedWindscreen I have a big PC and huuuge monitor at the moment, and this would basically free up all the benchtop space in my lab.

kentindell,
@kentindell@mastodon.social avatar

@EricPaulDennis @CrackedWindscreen @thejapantimes I’ve been typing for forty years*

@CrackedWindscreen He’s a bit like Marmite - if Marmite were a toxic fraudulent spread made from Apartheid South Africa extract.

One thing I like about getting old is you don’t have to take out your driver’s license, you can just gesture towards your face.

@Kensan @matthew_d_green Yes, but to a civilian it could have looked like the uniform of a well-regulated militia.

    A Mastodon success story! @kentindell heard our episode of The Amp Hour where we were confused about CAN bus and offered to join for an interview as an expert. And my oh my what an expert he is! What an interesting look into CAN bus! From the history up through the most modern usages of CAN in the modern auto. Also car hacking, that's always fun too! 😆

    @bastelwombat @stereo4x4 @chris_gammell There’s a CAN bus orbiting Mars, which I think counts as the furthest one away (I’m not sure if Juno has a CAN bus).

    @glynmoody Don’t talk Britain down! 5p off the bottle of wine that won’t be reflected in retail prices is a benefit of Brexit - and there aren’t many so you can’t afford to spurn them.

    I don't understand this one... if the WhatsApp messages are personal, then either he was using private messaging to do government business, or was using a government account to do private messaging. Either one should be a problem.

    What happened to the need to maintain secure, recorded communication in government?
