“Microsoft and Epic launch AI program that drafts patient response at UW Health”

OMFG this sounds like the worst thing ever invented.

(FYI this is Epic Systems of MyChart, not Epic Games of Fortnite.)

This is true for sure — but sometimes you can be prevented by the new owner of what you can disclose. That was my only point last night. We were owed disclosure, but I put that onus primarily on the new owner. It looks now like there is an official statement — better late than never, but like many of you, it has left a bad taste in my mouth for sure. Ice looks promising (hidden bar hasn’t had an update in years so that makes me less comfortable). https://mastodon.social/@lapcatsoftware/112565037324342140

@film_girl Well, acquisitions are negotiated. If the terms are that you can't even disclose the existence of the acquisition, that seems quite suspicious, and you shouldn't agree to those terms. Walk away if necessary. Unless all you care about is the cash...

I am doing fine, hope to be an indie dev forever, have no plans to sell StopTheMadness, and indeed never had an acquisition offer, but if someone totally mad offered me $millions for it, I absolutely would owe my customers an announcement.

Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. It’s a sacred responsibility to run my native code on other people’s computers, and I take that responsibility seriously. Your customers trusted you, and any developer who violates that trust harms all other developers.

I still don't get the point of animated AVIF. AVIF is an image format derived from a video format, AV1. We don't need an extra video version of image format.

One thing you can do with animated AVIF: Animation with an alpha channel.

But… this really just highlights how dumb it is that AV1 doesn't support transparency.

Also, with animated AVIF, the alpha channel is a separate image per frame. It's really bad for compression.

@jaffathecake The point is to have annoying autoplaying videos without any user controls. ;-)

Two updates about the Bartender acquisition:

  1. A comment by MacUpdater about the new Developer ID code signing certificate. Before it became Bartender App LLC it was temporarily App Sub 1 LLC, a name shared by a number of iOS App Store apps.

  2. A tweet from a Chinese software distributor claiming that the new owner of Bartender is https://www.applause.dev/

Bartender app has been acquired.

It’s not clear by whom, though.

Welp, I finally got “Verify Your Recovery Key” on my MacBook Pro after updating to Sonoma. It didn’t appear initially, but for some reason it showed up this morning.

I also see it in Sonoma on my Mac mini and in iOS 17 on my iPad.

WTF is it about?

I can’t believe that stupid shit like this is happening in a supposedly mature operating system.

How far we’ve fallen from Mac OS X two decades ago! https://mastodon.social/@lapcatsoftware/112522005318776673

Safari Gmail arrow keys problem and solution:

When you’re composing a Gmail reply in Safari, navigating between lines with the arrow keys causes the focus to move mysteriously to the “Show trimmed content” widget. I’ve discovered how to stop that, with my Safari extension StopTheMadness Pro.

Bugs always happen in major .0 releases. That’s perfectly understandable.

But here’s what bothers me about Apple nowadays:

  1. Apple keeps pushing out major .0 releases every single year, a nonstop schedule of new bugs.

  2. Software quality doesn’t improve 8-12 months after .0 versions, because Apple is always working on the next major version and also inexplicably pushing out new features year round in the current version, thus introducing even more bugs.

@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

I waited 8 months to install Sonoma, and it’s still buggy as hell! There are no “stable” versions anymore.

TIL geese can hiss at you.

I was out walking and came upon families of geese with a bunch of children, so they couldn’t just fly away. The adults hissed at me like cats.

To forestall the obvious question, no, I don’t have photos or video, because believe it or not, I like to go out and walk without my smartphone.

It was a little scary to be honest but also pretty cool. That may be the closest I’ve ever gotten to geese.

Good news, everyone!

I just received a phone call from an Apple representative. They confirmed that there was indeed a software bug in the bundle pricing calculation, which was fixed yesterday. They also said that affected developers, such as myself, would be compensated for our lost revenue.

That’s all I know for now. I was told that I would also be receiving a follow-up email later.

The conversation was pleasant, and the Apple representative was very nice about it.
