Good news, everyone!

I just received a phone call from an Apple representative. They confirmed that there was indeed a software bug in the bundle pricing calculation, which was fixed yesterday. They also said that affected developers, such as myself, would be compensated for our lost revenue.

That’s all I know for now. I was told that I would also be receiving a follow-up email later.

The conversation was pleasant, and the Apple representative was very nice about it.

If any Googlers are following me:

The Chrome releases RSS feed frequently fails to update.

It still lists May 5 as the latest, even though there have been multiple posts since then.

A lot of people seem to think that large corporations are competent because they make a ton of money.

In fact the opposite is true. Every layer of bureaucracy adds a layer of incompetence to a company. They usually create their best products when they’re much smaller, capture a market, and then cash in on that market for decades, in the process becoming less and less competent over time. Success and size breed incompetence, attract it like flies to shit.

Extreme wealth provides shelter to incompetence. Money can hide a lot of flaws.

Quick question: what are you hoping for Apple to reveal at WWDC this year? I’m writing a piece and it’d be useful to get insight into improvements devs and anyone else hopes Apple makes or new things it introduces (and how they are achieved).

This incredibly inconvenient Safari web inspector bug is still broken in iOS 17.5, two months after I reported it.

The bug was already fixed in the source code, so why wasn’t the fix shipped?!?!?!?!?

It affects me CONSTANTLY. Sigh.

One thing I don’t get: what’s the downside of Apple allowing macOS to run in a VM on iPad? It doesn’t take anything away from those who don’t want to use it. You just ignore the feature and keep using your iPad as-is.

Apple doesn’t even need to build it themselves, just allow the tech they already have to run and be allowed on the App Store, that way someone like Parallels can come along and provide it (which would also allow Linux, Windows, etc)

On Warner Bros (Greta Gerwig?) filing a copyright takedown on this patriarchy discussion:

"you made the fucking movie to get a message across and to get people talking and someone posts a thoughtful video essay about the central issue of the film and you fucking take it down?"

https://kottke.org/24/05/patriarchy-according-to-the-barbie-movie

lapcatsoftware,
@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

@davemark That’s a weird take. The studio made the movie to make money. The director may have had a message, but movie directors aren’t personally issuing copyright takedowns.

lapcatsoftware,
@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

@davemark Sure. But the comment suggested some kind of non-existent hypocrisy.

@aaron_pearce Did you check your financial reports?

lapcatsoftware,
@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

@aaron_pearce I would download All Counties or Regions (Multiple Files) and focus on one country (in my case the US). Each line of the report tells you which product it is.

The lines that say CMA (whatever that means) appear to be associated with bundle purchases.

From a sample size of exactly two, I suspect it may be something to do with the StopTheMadness plugin.

lapcatsoftware,

@joshua No, it doesn’t do that.

I’m not seeing the issue occur myself.

New blog post “Apple started cheating me out of App Store bundle purchases”

TL;DR I've discovered that starting in February, Apple mistakenly subtracts the price of the previously purchased app twice from the proceeds of a "Complete My Bundle" purchase, thereby causing me to take a loss on each such bundle purchase. This accounting change has cost me thousands of dollars over the past few months.

@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

App Store developers:

If you have an app bundle, check your financial reports from the February period and later. It appears there was an accounting change, and you may be losing money on Complete My Bundle purchases!

With a Complete My Bundle purchase, the original app price is listed as a refund. The problem is that now, starting in Feburary, the bundle price is no longer listed at the full price but rather at the discounted price. So the original app price is getting subtracted twice!!!!!!!

lapcatsoftware, to random
@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

Holy shit, I think Apple has fucked up the payments on the upgrade bundles?!? I’m actually LOSING MONEY on them now, because Apple is subtracting the full price of StopTheMadness but only adding the difference with the bundle price.

Apple wasn’t doing that on my statements from 2 months ago.

This discrepancy is costing me thousands of dollars per month! It’s insane.

Have you ever seen someone link to a Bluesky post?

Bluesky may have more users than Mastodon, but it seems a lot less relevant. I’ve personally found nothing interesting on there.

lapcatsoftware,
@lapcatsoftware@mastodon.social avatar

According to these stats, Bluesky has only 150k daily posters and 200k daily “likers”.

That’s a tiny fraction of the so-called “users”.

The trackpad on my M1 MacBook Pro is very frustrating. Frequently it just ignores my movements for a couple seconds, as if there were a dead spot, but there doesn’t seem to be one particular spot, just bad software.

I’ve owned a number of MacBook Pros before, 2006 to 2014, and this problem never happened with the older style trackpad.

“Get ready for another Apple meeting that could have been an email”

I’m going to let loose myself tomorrow morning, with my usual live snarking on Mastodon.

I’m glad about the schedule, because unlike WWDC it won’t interrupt my lunch here in the Central time zone.
