Swapped the reset cap on my Mark III, so now I can use the (knockoff) EverDrive on it. 10µF to 0.1µF is all it takes. Thanks to Neto from SMSPower for figuring this out. #retrogaming #sega #mastersystem

The Master EverDrive is loaded into an adapter into the board of the Mark III
The main menu of the EverDrive has successfully loaded, showing a list of folders of ROMs.

leadedsolder,
@leadedsolder@snack.social avatar

@ChartreuseK I was also surprised. the cartridge pinout doesn't offer a reset line on the Mark III (it does on the US SMS,) the everdrives in general seem to be really picky about it. You'll see similar weird behaviour when trying to take a knockoff EverDrive N8 to a real NES or a knockoff Famiclone to a real EverDrive for a similar reason.

FYI, if you are taking apart a Dynalogic Hyperion, there are only six screws to worry about: two flathead captive in the handle, two Phillips on the bottom, and these sneaky Phils on the bottom-side that are SUPER easy to miss.

Don't bother trying to remove the hard-to-reach ones.

New blog post! If you're setting up a BlueSCSI image for your classic Mac, there's lots of little tricks and traps for the first-timer. I'm hoping this entry will make things easier, and you'll also learn how to change your hard drive icon... in Japanese. #retrocomputing #mac68k #bluescsi

I have been reminded again that not everyone knows about the difference between old tantalum capacitors and modern tantalum polymer capacitors.

the whole "tantalum capacitors catch fire" thing occurs due to oxygen production at internal fissure boundaries in the dielectric during breakdown when exposed to overvoltage. heat + oxygen = fire.

tantalum polymer dielectrics absorb oxygen at fissure boundaries instead of producing it, self-healing them against this effect. no fire.

leadedsolder,
@leadedsolder@snack.social avatar

@gsuberland @me_ I don't care about the occasional explosion but I do mind the mystery "oh the power supply rail won't come up because one of the tantalums soaked up too much ripple on cold start and shorted" issue. Is that resolved these days?

leadedsolder,
@leadedsolder@snack.social avatar

@gsuberland @me_ are they more resilient to this abuse now/need less derating than before? I have 22uF/16V caps from 1981 shorting on 5V lines.

leadedsolder,
@leadedsolder@snack.social avatar

@gsuberland @me_ I'll probably replace them with aluminum electrolytics since they're just used for bulk filtering. I assume they were picked for size and not performance reasons.

Just like me, my first-rev PC-6001 RAM/ROM expander cartridge looks good but doesn't work. I think I've missed shorting the MSW1/MSW2 jumper that keeps the computer from working if it's open and the cartridge is detected. Hopefully an easy bodge and then I can enjoy Extended BASIC.

It is truly impressive you can make a ram tester that draws video without using any of the system's actual ram.

New blog post! What's brown, enormous, contains an ashtray and seats two (CPUs?) It's the Fujitsu FM-8, of course. What's wrong with this one? It's been parted out in the pursuit of profit.

Come see if it can be revived: https://www.leadedsolder.com/2024/04/09/fujitsu-fm8-pickup-cpu-repair.html

About a week ago I posted about NewtHack, a Roguelike for Apple Newton that only lets you play level 1 unless you buy a key. I was complaining how so many of these old games/softwares were soft-locked now by asking for codes we can no longer provide.

Someone here sent me a code for an earlier version to try. But now that reply is GONE, apparently deleted. Are you still here, anonymous kind soul? Can you send it to me again?

I found an ancient photo, must be pre-2010 I reckon, of Giles encountering a Scotch egg for the first time at Llandovery castle.

@llamasoft_ox I don't know how castles reproduce, so I took a shot in the dark.

TIL that microprose did an in-house port of Railroad Tycoon to the Macintosh Plus/SE in the early 90s.

it is adorable. they went through an incredible amount of effort to mac-ify the interface, and repainted all of the art in high-res black & white. and the mouse is fully functional, unlike the ms-dos version

best compliment i can give to its porting team: it feels like a genuine maxis game.

Are there any hacks to modern MacOS 14 that forces windows to have an actual title bar at the top of them? You know, an area that contains the application title or document title and allows you to move is easily?

For instance, with Firefox and lots of tabs open, the window itself has no tittle bar at the top. Moving the window is difficult and only possible on the far left or right of the top of the window. It also doesn't identify itself.

Update: see replies!

leadedsolder,
@leadedsolder@snack.social avatar

@paulrickards I often drag the file icon from the title bar to do stuff with the file in Finder, so that missing sucked. It was easy to turn it back on though! Thanks

i don't think i've ever seen this documented anywhere, so here goes:

Myst was built with Apple Hypercard, using a ton of third-party extensions to pull off an extremely atmospheric first person experience.

what is less known is that because Myst is a hypercard stack, it is possible to load the game in black & white mode despite color being a stated system requirement. the result are scenes that have been dithered and posterized from 8-bit colour, down to 1-bit. they look almost like a silhouetted photograph of a georges seurat painting, eery and beautiful in their own way.

@vga256 @spinning_bird I remember my dad having to drop into the script editor to apply some kind of patch to the colourized version. I still need to write up my level editor findings in a thread or miniature blog post or something.

I'm not a huge fan of cassette tape drives in general, but this MZ-700 needs my help. All the belts are there, power is present, but the play button doesn't make it turn. What's going on? Macintosh LC. An objectively terrible and crippled machine, but still surprisingly capable.

16mhz 68020 processor
10mb RAM, no virtual memory
256 colours 640x480 screen

And despite those specs, there is a lot of cooperative multitasking going on!
