A decade ago I wrote a Python plug-in (https://gist.github.com/edenwaith/406993d4ca59b058efe6) for TextWrangler/BBEdit to format JSON. Today I learned that BBEdit has a feature which handles this now via the Text > Reformat Document menu.

edenwaith,
@edenwaith@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@robotspacer I learned this from a blog post by Michael Tsai. I’ve tried many text editors, but keep coming back to BBEdit (@bbedit), as it continues to be a Swiss Army knife of usefulness and new surprises.

Years ago, my work made use of LaCie d2 external drives, which I liked a lot and have purchased quite a few. One of them which I used for backups for an old iMac seems to have gotten shocked to death. Fortunately, I was able to quickly disassemble the case, swap the hard drive out with another (functioning) d2 case and discovered that the drive (and its data) is still alive! Very happy to be able to be able to revive a "dead" drive with no proprietary encryption, et cetera.

Sadly, most of the Wii’s network-based services have been discontinued, but the internet browser still works — sort of. In a similar manner in trying to use a PowerBook to browse the web, SSL connections will often fail to load, the browser doesn’t render modern web pages, but at least frogfind.com is there to try and navigate the Web.

Hello. My computer is not working. Can anyone give me some advice?

edenwaith,
@edenwaith@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@alghost @mcc A minimum of three times, of course. And if has no power, disassemble and then reassemble.

If anything, Apple is good about throwing curveballs to keep us guessing and the rumor mill flowing. When there were rumors that a new iPad might feature a brand new M4 chip, that seemed unbelievable since the M3 line was introduced just a little over 6 months ago. Yet, here we are with the new iPad Pro featuring the M4! Now it's time to speculate if the next line of Mac Studio and Pro will skip the M3 family and just go to M4 variants.

I love the subtle jab Apple took towards Epic Games when they briefly featured PubG during today's iPad event.

Need your opinion! Toying with the idea of having 2 endings in Devil's Hideout.

One that's easy to get and is 'okay, game beaten, but it's not all rosy...' and another that's harder to get but is more triumphant.

Would you rather have that, or just one ending that's good? 🙂

edenwaith,
@edenwaith@mastodon.gamedev.place avatar

@cosmicvoid If it is feasible to do so. One of the reasons that KQ6 is one of my favourites of the King’s Quest series is due to the multiple endings.

Bash shell scripting can be useful, but the syntax can be incredibly picky and annoying.

I'm reading through some of Apple's Core Image Programming Guide (https://developer.apple.com/library/archive/documentation/GraphicsImaging/Conceptual/CoreImaging/ci_detect_faces/ci_detect_faces.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP30001185-CH8-SW1), and it is amusing/interesting to see some of the (obviously older) sample code is still in Objective-C. Swift has been the way forward for many years, but this is a case where it is still useful to be able to work with Objective-C.

Never forget Adobe Space Monkey! (Apparently, "Space Monkey" was the code name for Adobe Photoshop CS2. I was able to trigger this alternate splash screen when I launched PS CS2 from another partition/OS on my PowerBook.

Nothing new in the annals of software development, but it seems like every couple of years, another attempt is made at discovering the elusive silver bullet to make creating software easier by some unspecified magnitude. The potential solution? Just write new tools and languages! Genius!

I understand that recipe sites are popular, and hence good places for advertising, but they are also some of the most frustrating websites to ever visit with numerous ads, pop-ups, and someone's life story about the recipe. Here's a new level of frustration: the steps for the recipe are now on another page, or one can download the site's app! No, thanks. This is why I have posted some of my favorite recipes on my blog. No ads or in depth story, just the damn recipe.

For the past several years, I've spent a lot of time and effort in researching computer games: How the old games were built, developing new tools, helping port games to the Mac, writing tutorials on getting old games to run on new hardware, finding Easter eggs, etc. I've finally compiled all of this work on a new Games section on my website for far easier reference to find a given topic.

Today is my birthday!

If you'd like to do something for me for my birthday, would you please reply to this with—or by other means send me— something with colors you liked? Like an image or a video or a link. Music would also be acceptable if it gives you a strong synesthesiac association with color.

If this request confuses you, here are some examples of images with colors I found striking [Artists: Laurie Barmore, Vian Borchert, Erica Aurahack]. But your reply can be whatever colors you like.
