A 600dB truck horn, for when you need to deafen God from across the universe https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005006139224416.html

liamvhogan,
@liamvhogan@aus.social avatar

@ThermiteBeGiants @jpm I’m picturing installing this on my motorbike but having to add extra padding so that I don’t liquefy myself through the seat

liamvhogan,
@liamvhogan@aus.social avatar

@ThermiteBeGiants @jpm also isn’t there a theoretical limit to decibels relating to the atmosphere, topping out at like 190dB where it’s ‘noise of a Saturn rocket engine’

liamvhogan,
@liamvhogan@aus.social avatar

@jpm @ThermiteBeGiants I was right, it’s logarithmic, apparently every 10dB is an order of magnitude greater, and Saturn V was ~205dB. So maybe the 12v horn is that much mathematically louder than the Apollo rockets but probably it’s not

One of the mysteries of rap history is how the Beastie Boys managed to avoid any major diss battles, with anyone, despite being at best really annoying brats and at worst, historically huge misogynists and dickheads. These three should be studied by peace and conflict experts

Chainsaws have a pull cord to start the engine, and it’s designed for roughly the arm pull length of an adult man. If you don’t have that it doesn’t matter how strong you are, you’ll struggle to start it. ‘Design aspects of material objects’ with Liam

The Montague Street Bridge might have its fans and it does have winning truck-chomping ways, but for my money it’s Shire people yeeting expensive cars into the Hacking River at Audley that is the greater traffic spectacle

Next to Sydney FC winning things there is no greater spectacle in Australian soccer than Melbourne Victory losing and being salty about it

It depresses me a great deal that nobody in NSW Planning said ‘the reason DA assessessment at council level is so slow is because the regulatory system is incredibly demanding and complicated, mostly subjective, with high stakes and serious penalties at many of the steps’ when someone said ‘why don’t we get an AI to do it’

It escapes very few observers here, that the use cases for AI always seem to be work practices with less subjective social status (which is not the same thing as value).

DA assessment in NSW and most Australian councils is done by more junior planners, earlier in their careers, before they move up to strategic planning. There are more women planners doing that work.

Was I fucking drunk when I designed this board? I completely missed 2 GPIOs to control a LED and a switch on the schematic, and I used the wrong SERCOM for the I2C lines which means I now need to swap SCL and SDA.

This thing is a fucking mess.

I’ve said before that the most precious part of the Web are the pre-Facebook forums run by enthusiasts of specific domains (say, owners of a model of motorbike). There’ll be knowledge there from crusty old riders that means the difference between success and failure at doing what you want to do.

It’s exactly this kind of specific knowledge, like knowing the right steps and way to adjust the valve clearances on a bike, that is threatened by AI content mills, because an LLM doesn’t know if it’s 0.15mm or 15mm, and doesn’t care

I understand that some of you enjoy smart houses to program functionality and I appreciate that we live in a free society but my kettle and toaster and washing machine and fridge live under sufferance. I don’t even like that they have clocks. Why does a microwave need to know what time it is
