I was in school before most schools had a free breakfast program. This meant most mornings I did not eat breakfast. By mid morning, it was hard to concentrate. I'd be watching the clock until lunch, which I got for free due to financial hardship. This was alleviated when I went to a school with free breakfast, for which I qualified. I still had ADHD struggles, but at least I wasn't watching the clock anymore, waiting for lunch. There was a brief time where I didn't qualify for free lunch. Lunch looked like a peanut butter sandwich, often without jelly, or buttered bread, and sometimes just a carrot. Subsidized school meals was a lifeline for me. Now some people want to grow the program, so that kids don't fall through the gap like I did, and others want to take it away completely. Children can't learn when they're hungry. And sometimes, those school meals are the only decent meals they have. Summers can be rough.
Rolling my eyes hard at this venture capitalist blaming an insulin shortage on reduced pricing when the manufacturer says that competing products aren't the cause.
And yes, every diabetic I know hoards supplies because running out of life -or-death meds because of a shortage or pharmacy/doctor/insurance delay is scary.
My kid thinks it's wildly unfair (and I tend to agree!) that boys can bring their phones to the school formal dance (because pockets) and girls cannot (no pockets).
@rochelle I refuse to wear clothes without pockets anymore. I have no idea what styles kids wear these days, but I order from eShakti. Everything has pockets.
I'm seriously starting to think everybody that says you should never use #Wikipedia as a source or basis for research simply doesn't know how to use Wikipedia. For example, the references, and the external links, are where the real goldmines are at and it's a hell of a lot better than hitting paywalls or LLM garbage!
@weirdwriter the first library science class I took included a paper comparing the accuracy of Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica, and they weren't that different. Both had errors.
My husband has these horrible bets with the people at his office This month it's "who can lower their cholesterol the most?"
They all run out & get tested on the 1st then do it again at the end of the month and the person with the biggest drop wins the betting pool.
I keep telling him that's not how "health" works, but he's not listening and watched some video about eating a "shot" of garlic juice, lemon and hot peppers. He says he can "feel it working"🙄
@celesteh I've spent a lot of times in US hospitals. They're always too cold (something about infection control and staff comfort). Very likely if you ask about making it warmer, they can either change the temp for his room or give advice on how to manipulate it (keep door open/closed and so on.)
@celesteh I'm glad he's more comfortable and eating. I hope the care at his new home will help him stay that way once he's released from the hospital. ❤️
@celesteh I can recommend some vegan food if you have any choice in where you're going. Can't do anything about the terrible book policies. ☹️ Locals mostly hate the book bans.
