In Austin, apartment complexes with fire suppression sprinklers are not required to build a window in every bedroom. Natural light is key to human health.

I was in school before most schools had a free breakfast program. This meant most mornings I did not eat breakfast. By mid morning, it was hard to concentrate. I'd be watching the clock until lunch, which I got for free due to financial hardship. This was alleviated when I went to a school with free breakfast, for which I qualified. I still had ADHD struggles, but at least I wasn't watching the clock anymore, waiting for lunch. There was a brief time where I didn't qualify for free lunch. Lunch looked like a peanut butter sandwich, often without jelly, or buttered bread, and sometimes just a carrot. Subsidized school meals was a lifeline for me. Now some people want to grow the program, so that kids don't fall through the gap like I did, and others want to take it away completely. Children can't learn when they're hungry. And sometimes, those school meals are the only decent meals they have. Summers can be rough.

@hauntedhideaway yes! Free school meals for all kids, and a monthly child allowance for every child. No child* should grow up in poverty.

(*No one should live in poverty, but this is a first step.)

Rolling my eyes hard at this venture capitalist blaming an insulin shortage on reduced pricing when the manufacturer says that competing products aren't the cause.

And yes, every diabetic I know hoards supplies because running out of life -or-death meds because of a shortage or pharmacy/doctor/insurance delay is scary.

Anyone making predictions about eclipse weather this far in advance is full of it. It's not possible to predict this far out.

The kid's phone got wet so we all had to scramble to switch to the omnipod pdm. It's so much harder to do when you're rushing to get back to work and school than when it's a leisurely change for a new device.

All this new diabetes technology makes things better and safer. But it has its downsides, too.

I just got an email from an agency asking me to fill out a recommendation form for a friend, but they sent it with someone else's filled out form instead of a blank. And then sent a blank form in a second email without clawing back the first email.

Really resisting the urge to reply with instructions for recalling email messages in Gmail.

My kid thinks it's wildly unfair (and I tend to agree!) that boys can bring their phones to the school formal dance (because pockets) and girls cannot (no pockets).

lonestarplate,
@lonestarplate@babka.social avatar

@rochelle I refuse to wear clothes without pockets anymore. I have no idea what styles kids wear these days, but I order from eShakti. Everything has pockets.

weirdwriter, to Wikipedia

I'm seriously starting to think everybody that says you should never use as a source or basis for research simply doesn't know how to use Wikipedia. For example, the references, and the external links, are where the real goldmines are at and it's a hell of a lot better than hitting paywalls or LLM garbage!

lonestarplate,
@lonestarplate@babka.social avatar

@weirdwriter the first library science class I took included a paper comparing the accuracy of Wikipedia and Encyclopedia Britannica, and they weren't that different. Both had errors.

There was a lefty zine explaining antisemitism circukating weeks/months ago. But I can't remember what it was called or how to find it.

Anyone remember that?

My husband has these horrible bets with the people at his office This month it's "who can lower their cholesterol the most?"

They all run out & get tested on the 1st then do it again at the end of the month and the person with the biggest drop wins the betting pool.

I keep telling him that's not how "health" works, but he's not listening and watched some video about eating a "shot" of garlic juice, lemon and hot peppers. He says he can "feel it working"🙄

Are there any real tips?

lonestarplate,
@lonestarplate@babka.social avatar

@futurebird these are the foods Mayo Clinic suggests. They're all the ones you would expect.

I impulsively bought frozen pearl onions awhile back. I need to use them up soon before it's 100F/40C again. Anyone have a favorite recipe without red wine or balsamic vinegar?

Whenever you see a news article about that seems unfathomable to you, it's something like this. Something that challenges rigid views on gender, sexuality, or race.

The days where book banning was about bad grammar in Junie B. Jones or potty humor in Captain Underpants aren't what we're dealing with now. Don't let book banners control the conversation by categorizing their efforts as absurd.

I'm sat in a hotel room in a place that has banned The Hobbit from school libraries.

lonestarplate,
@lonestarplate@babka.social avatar

@celesteh I can recommend some vegan food if you have any choice in where you're going. Can't do anything about the terrible book policies. ☹️ Locals mostly hate the book bans.

lonestarplate,
@lonestarplate@babka.social avatar

@celesteh on foot makes it harder. Texas is a driving place.

Hopdoddy- beyond burger or black bean patty on whole wheat

Pei Wei - vegan options online

Firebirds - tons of options. All tortillas, beans, and veggies are ok.

Masala Wok - tons of options. Love the Gobi Manchurian.

Turkish Cafe

Tacodeli if you can get that far. All tortillas are ok as are beans. About half the veg menu is vegan.

lonestarplate,
@lonestarplate@babka.social avatar

@celesteh Dimassi's - love this place. Buffet. Vegan items marked.

Inchin's Bamboo Garden

Is my dad dying? Nobody knows!

lonestarplate,
@lonestarplate@babka.social avatar

@celesteh I've spent a lot of times in US hospitals. They're always too cold (something about infection control and staff comfort). Very likely if you ask about making it warmer, they can either change the temp for his room or give advice on how to manipulate it (keep door open/closed and so on.)

lonestarplate,
@lonestarplate@babka.social avatar

@celesteh I'm glad he's more comfortable and eating. I hope the care at his new home will help him stay that way once he's released from the hospital. ❤️
