Booked an Interrail Pass to travel to #emfcamp, a hacker camp in the UK! #emf2024

Getting excited! 😆 This will be the first time I use the Channel Tunnel!

@blinry Make sure you don't miss it! I wouldn't believe it if it hadn't happened to myself, but it's surprisingly easy to miss

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

• Edelstahl. So. viel. Edelstahl.

• Dampfgarer.

can anyone recommend a card printer for credit card size plastic cards?

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@flora We have an Evolis Primacy at work which works quite well – if and when it works at all. It's a real headache to set up, even with Windows. No idea how good the Linux compatibility is.

Maybe @digitalcourage can make a recommendation? I know you people have a setup for printing your picture ID cards

As fixes for the current and are not reliably available yet, keep in mind that a workaround exists for those of you who don’t need support for the ISO-2022-CN-EXT character set: https://rockylinux.org/news/glibc-vulnerability-april-2024/

This should be quite straightforward to apply on most machines – except those running . If you do use NixOS, my solution might help you bridge the gap until the proper fix is upstream: https://git.brokentech.cloud/mart-w/nixos-workaround-cve-2024-2961

Thanks @hexa for pointing me in the right direction!

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@sandro Good to know, thank you! I don't do that, so that isn't relevant to me personally, but I can see how it would impact others. I'll add a notice to the readme.

Do you have a better idea? My initial approach was to use overlays or somehow override glibc for PHP specifically, but being glibc, that would trigger massive builds of otherwise cached packages for a mere config change. That's when I was made aware of replaceRuntimeDependencies, which seemed to be a good tradeoff.

Gib es hier sowas wie... Bodenreinigungsspezialisten?

Danke fuers rege Teilen. 🙏

mart_w, (edited )
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

does it count as a subtoot to simply say "i'm going to be good and not subtoot"

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@jacqueline Honestly, I think it might be the wording or lack of context in the first poll. I needed to read it at least five times before I felt like I understood what you're even asking, and I'm still only 90 % certain I got it right. Maybe other people were just as confused.

Granted, English isn't my first language. But that's true for many people here.

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@jacqueline Just to be sure: You're referring to those cases where someone explicitly asks people not to reply to their toot and some people reply anyway just to show that they "would have replied" if they weren't asked not to. And you asked if that by itself qualifies as a reply. Right?

... Right? 😅

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@jacqueline Ah, I see now. Thanks for the explanation!

Also, I approve of your scientific process. It's clear that you put a lot of thought into your methodology

entropy strikes again: one of two drives in my nas failed a smart test

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@exchgr How dare you overlook that there's WD Red, WD Red Plus, and WD Red Pro, and only the latter two are actually suited for being put into servers. It's so straightforward and totally doesn't undermine having a colour-coded system in the first place!

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@exchgr Did you check if you're covered by warranty? There should 3 years of warranty on your model. Maybe you can them replaced.

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@exchgr Sure, but maybe you can sell the new one to get a bit of your money back.

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@exchgr Ooo, you're using btrfs? I was gonna ask how you plan to extend your filesystem to 8 TB.

... do keep backups though, and please keep us updated 😇

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@exchgr But wouldn't that leave you with a new 8 TB array, an old disk that's failing SMART, and an old disk that has already been part of a mixed-size btrfs array? The last part is what worries me, but maybe Synology is doing some extra cleverness to avoid btrfs problems. Actually, they must be, otherwise they couldn't sell this product

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@exchgr Even though you upgraded to 7200 rpm? Now that's surprising.

Maybe it's a resonance frequency thing, though. I'm running four WD Red Plus at 5400 rpm, and while they've never been particularly loud, they got a lot quiter once I moved them from a compact free-standing NAS enclosure (like I assume you have) to a bigger one. If it is about the frequency, it would make sense for the rotation speed to make a big difference.

mart_w,
@mart_w@chaos.social avatar

@exchgr Might also have to do with the fact that they're actually just better drives than the standard WD Reds. I've never had them, so no idea how loud they get.
