I’ve been having a great time with my new @frameworkcomputer laptop. The flexibility is really unique. First I got to build the laptop myself with parts, and now I get it to be what I want it to be with regards to input and ports and such. I’ll probably swap out the screen bezel for a bolder color, though. The purple is not very purple. Worth the 6 month wait!

@gabek you finally got it! I have the lavender bezel on my 13; it’s pretty muted as well

I've had to stay off the internet for the past day because I didn't have a chance to watch Eurovision live, and instead had to watch it today. I've now watched it, so I can again come back online.

I'm working in the South Bay from a coffee shop today. I don't often work from a coffee shop these days. I also don't often get an iced latte because SF doesn't actually get very warm. But the combination of working from a coffee shop and an iced latte brings me back to all the hours I spent working from coffee shops in Omaha for some reason.

Some last call musings on NA brews for Dry January. So surprised at the tons of options out there! Really hop’d up about it. But it’s late, so here you go before I tap out for the night. (Faux) Cheers! Let’s see how fedi clients like this link with a 🍻 emoji in it https://sheetsj.com/blog/dry-january-beers-%F0%9F%8D%BB/

@jeffsheets Which local shop did you visit? I was hoping for a big selection at Beertopia, but it wasn't much beyond what most grocery stores stock.

A few others I like:

Brewdog has a mix pack with a few good options. I liked their Elvis and Punk AF ones; guessing you'd like the Hazy
Boulevard's Flying Start is a very solid IPA
PBR has a NA option that I like, but then I also liked Heineken Zero :)

I've not found the "hop water" choices all that great. Lagunitas's IPNA > Hoppy Refresher

Since many of you have asked, here's the list of self-hosted services I am running in my HomeLab along with network diagrams and related tutorials!

mattdsteele,
@mattdsteele@carhenge.club avatar

@technotim This was really insightful!

For your GitOps, are you running a self-hosted instance of Gitlab/Github, or using their cloud options? I would expect you'd need the CI runners on-prem to have access to your servers & control plane, but I struggle knowing whether self-hosting the actual Git repos makes sense.

I haven’t yet figured out my New Year’s resolutions. Primarily because I have a pre-order in for the Framework 16, so my personal daily driver machine screen size will change in a few months, and I don’t know what I’ll eventually decide on. But this change in my life will impact me a lot, and I’m sure you’ll be going on this journey with me. 2024 will be a big year, three inches bigger.

mattdsteele,

@gabek Am I reading between the lines that you're using a Framework 13 right now? I'm looking to replace my current (Razer) laptop, and their Ryzen model is looking really solid.

One facet of the recent uptick in Web Components I’ve been tracking is where the interest is coming from.

I’ve been a fan of WCs for a while, and struggled to see why they had such a struggle gaining traction in the “web app” world. I gave a talk back in 2018 about it! https://steele.blue/web-components-arent-weird-anymore/

My theory was the initial tooling (Polymer, reliance on Bower, etc) was too “weird” for React/etc devs, but newer tools like Stencil and Lit would help bridge that gap. That never seemed to happen!

Watching this play out again and again. Caveat emptor if you ignore HOW something is funded. Relying on—let alone building a business on top of—VC-funded hypergrowth-or-bust dependencies is decidedly risky!
