Pretty cool how my old iPod touch from over 10 years ago has nearly 3000 songs loaded up and there's no way for me to recover any of them

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@rootcompute was just thinking the other day, in the pre-smartphone era you could buy songs for a $1 for your iPod but they'd be stuck in your device. Makes no sense, if you paid for the file you should be able to take it wherever you want without iTunes being a middle man.

Still better than streaming tho.

When people complain about #OOP being just an over-engineered mess of indirection, they don't mean OOP. Just the Java ecosystem. #FFS

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@Crell I'm under the impression the JavaScript community is pretty anti-OOP, I find myself frequently discussing the topic with a colleague and his position always end up being "I shouldn't have to have multiple interfaces and classes just to do one simple thing".

So, I gave this brand-new Nintendo Switch to little dude (my nephew) for his 8th birthday a couple years ago, I saw the current condition of it this past weekend and I gotta say, it's the most disgusting console I've ever seen in my life, it's broken in multiple places and the left joycon is jammed so it's impossible getting it all the way down, not to mention it had to be repaired in the past. His excuse? "Well, it's been 4 years already". Fuckin' kids think everything is disposable LOL.

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

That Switch was the first current generation console I bought brand-new, I don't even own a Switch myself 😭

And it's been only 3 years, not 4.

The bottom line: spoil your kids, specially your nephews and nieces, but teach them the value of things, don't be like me.

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer I'd say that's bad but it happens to me all the time too, and I'm supposed to be an adult 😅

I guess the main difference is I'd never trust myself with a $1k phone, I'm just too clumsy.

Also, do iPhones still come with a crystal back? I got a Xiaomi and it's like that, it's a horrible design choice, they gotta bring back all plastic/metal design.

So many "democracies" have been reduced to choosing the lesser of two evils. In many cases (stupid) people are even blatantly deceived to pick the worst of those two evils — I bet you can think of a couple of examples yourself — so needless to say, this shit ain't working.

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@Crell I'm under the impression Churchill had a very short list of alternatives in mind when referring to "all the other ones".

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@Crell Yup. The funny thing is most people believing in democracy can point this as the main issue with communism/socialism, they're so close...

No, , this really is a gotcha, and a stupid one at that.

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@Crell so, basically they're making every single argument to be passed by reference? Yikes. I imagine this will break millions of lines of existing code.

urgh, knee deep in Traits, *Aware interfaces, and Abstract classes.

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@dantleech I can't decide what's worse, traits or interfaces with default implementations. Fortunately we do not have the latter in PHP and I pray we never get it, despite the feature having its usages I can already see people abusing the hell outta it.

Having tasted extension functions in , I really really want them in . I am not sure how that would be even feasible, though. 😞

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@Crell they are extensively used in C# too, I can see how they're useful but I can't get myself to like them, it feels hacky, like adding a method to a class prototype in JavaScript.

This week I went to the gym for the first time since April 2023 and now I cannot even move my limbs properly. It's been 48 hours since the first workout and achiness is going strong. I have never been this sore for so long.

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

I think I rushed this training to failure thing, I can see it puts more stress on the muscles but if I'm so sore I cannot do my next workout then it's pointless.

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@khalidabuhakmeh I lost a lot of muscle after not working out and watching my diet, went from my ideal weight at 190lbs to around 150lbs. It took me years of hard work to get there and suddenly it was gone.

The good thing is I can get there a lot faster now with the knowledge and experience I've accumulated so far, I'm already got my supplements and I'm taking care of my diet but my calories need are high, 3,000 calories per day is a bit too much for an average Joe like me 😅

@sarah great article Sarah, it shines a light on some issues I've come across while working with microservices — which I haven't really enjoyed to be honest. I'm already excited for the next articles.

I presume you'll be covering this at some point in the future but did you start with a monolith and went from there, or this architecture was the result of careful design after considering the application requirements?

Anyone anything good at the moment? I'm still on my PSP kick playing MGS Peace Walker which I think is going to keep me busy for a while. Especially as I'm not great at it 😶.

So happy I picked up a PSP again though. Such a fun console. I maaayyy have also bought Silent Hill Origins. I think that's probably all the games that I definitely want for it, but any suggestions of hidden gems that I should look out for?

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@Hundstrasse I'm playing Jeanne d'Arc right now, it's a very fun tactical RPG.

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@Hundstrasse it's not the kind of game I'd usually pick up but it really got me hooked, I'm already 40+ hours in and I don't even know when it happened.

The gameplay is whatever, your basic move-in-a-grid-and-attack type, but the animated cutscenes and story are top tier 💯.

Wait, the Leafs lost to the Bruins yet again? What the hell is this? An annual tradition? 🙆‍♂️

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

@grmpyprogrammer yikes, I don't follow MLB that closely but I was very excited when the Jays got rid of old guys like Joshn Donaldson and Kevin Pillar and decided to develop their young talent, I expected them to be at least right behind the Yankees and Red Sox in a couple of years, sadly it hasn't worked out that way.

maxalmonte14, to Starwars
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

Let's kick up by watching the original movie. Let's see what I've been missing on all these years.

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

Ok, I planned on watching the whole trilogy on May the 4th but got too busy/tired and ended up just watching the first movie. I gotta say, now I get why George Lucas said this was a movie for 12 year olds, it's just so damn fun! I thought it was going to be all serious and stuff, but no, the comedic tone is not dissimilar from more modern movies (yes, I said that, don't crucify me).

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

I feel like suddenly I properly understand a TON of references that I've been seen during all my life. Goes to show how the first movie is still so influential after almost 50 years of its release.

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

I always thought these guys (the stormtroopers) were the good ones, why? Because they wear a basically all-white armor while the main antagonist wears an all-black one, it was a contrast thing my mind worked out.

Don't judge me, my only experience with Star Wars before watching the movie was the Star Wars Racing game for Nintendo 64 and those shorts they had in Cartoon Network when I was a kid (which I wasn't really into).

maxalmonte14,
@maxalmonte14@indiehackers.social avatar

In conclusion I had a great time watching Star Wars and now I'm asking myself how on Earth I managed to avoid it for 30 years, I convinced myself that I wasn't going to be into it but surprisingly I totally was!

My only criticism of the movie is it could be a little longer, I think they could have used an extra hour for explaining Luke's flying skills better and developing his and Obi-Wan Kenobi's mentor-mentee relation, but that's just me, I tend to like longer movies.
