@inquiline We have a cute mallard couple roaming our neighborhood, which our dog is way too interested in investigating. They're quite nonplussed, but nevertheless we keep her at a distance.

At least two-fifths of Roth-era Van Halen lyrics are just DLR having a conversation with the voices in his head:
“Hello, hey you
Who said that?
Baby, how you been?”

In the continued adventures of Glenn Flies A Lot (trip #8 by air in last 14 months), I have a terribly early morning return in a couple days home…and Alaska already put me in first class. The flight, to be fair, will be half empty. I think this is a repositioning flight they do for timing reasons. I earned Alaska status last year and I will take the reward. So far, been offered or given premier and first class on about 70% of flights!

mediageek,
@mediageek@mastodon.social avatar

@glennf As a PNWer I definitely appreciate Alaska status. I barely miss getting upgraded to Premier, at least. I don't know if you do this, but you can usually upgrade yourself to Premier ~24 hours before a flight, rather than wait for it to happen automatically.

I love it when a podcast listener reaches out to tell us about their new book, which is completely up our alley. While I'm sympathetic to the desire to chase a mass audience, my heart is with the joy and power of niche.

On this show I played some of my favorite tracks brought to us by the late Steve Albini (gone too soon). Then I dived into the global jazz fusion sea. Featuring The Jesus Lizard, Murder Inc., PJ Harvey, Shellac, Big Black, The Ex, Melt-Banana, Zeni Geva, Robbie Fulks, Gogol Bordello, Niemen, Happy End.

I have an idea. I would like to build a desk for myself using a slab of wood and a bunch of milk crates.

Milk crates are cheap. You can buy them for $5-$6 each on specialty sites.

I have the perfect spot for it on my third floor, next to a window. I could theoretically fit a 100-inch slab of wood in the spot.

@ernie In the olden days, you'd just nick them from behind a supermarket.

"The walled enclosures that crowded out much of that acre of developed land still reside within an infinite expanse of possibility. There are no limits to the web — if it has borders, they are ever expanding. We may feel as though we are trapped in a tiny, crowded, noisy space, but it is only because we don't see over the walls."

Yes, we CAN have a different web! Hooray @molly0xfff 💯

Also, I might argue we do have a different web now, when we peer over those walls.

I was unaware Daryl Hall did this kind of power pop / post-punk music. Is all of his solo stuff like this? Digging this track rn. 🎸 🤩

@Defiance This is THE Daryl Hall record! Recorded with Robert Fripp producing, then shelved by the label for a few years because they worried it would interfere with the rising popularity of Hall and Oates. He's otherwise never done something quite like it. It was a a bit of a holy grail for a long time, though re-released finally a few years ago and available for streaming, too.

Fripp was recently on Daryl's TV show performing the same track.

Catching up on the Watcher controversy and nobody is talking about the obvious reason this whole mess came up: There were things that they liked making that couldn't get sponsors, and they wanted to make those things.

It's the same reason Neil Young once made Trans. They are stuck with an audience (and an algorithm) that wants one thing and they want to make something else.

mediageek,

@ernie This pretty much sums it up, doesn't it? "A subscription-based business requires an active fandom. And an ad-supported business requires a much bigger, and thus, usually more passive fandom."

Tough to build for both. If you're extremely successful with a huge audience, then you may have an opportunity to tack on subscription. But not necessarily.
