Second attempt at the carbonara today. It’s so good, but my god it’s a heavy meal.

"Naming things" is just a semiotic proxy metric, the two real hardest problems in software are understanding yourself and understanding other people.

Watching myself talk is always agonizing, but Carol is such a great speaker and her team's research on code review anxiety and what you can do about it is so good.

Anxiety around code review is an absolutely pervasive part of the experience of being a developer on a team, for people of any degree of experience, and it doesn't need to be that way.

I've proposed the idea to the Signal community that if tools like Recall go out of their way to recognize and ignore DRM'ed content, then messenger programs that want to avoid being recorded should have a small always-on DRM'ed image on display at all times as a defensive measure.

If the tools are there, we might as well put them to good use.

Imagine working for a company that is so well managed, that is so well organized and competently led, that a genuinely felt need for a tool that let you be in three meetings at the same time somehow emerged organically from the working culture as a problem worth solving.

Imagine working somewhere that building a tool that let people be in three meetings at the same time sounded like a good idea.

There are plenty of underappreciated parenting milestones in this world, but getting to a point where you can tell your kid, we're out of this thing, here's a few dollars, please go to the store and get the thing, and they say "no problem" and go to the store and come back with the thing and it's easy and no fuss, that's actually pretty fantastic.

An interesting question: is there such a thing as dazzle camo for compression algorithms?

Another day of downtime because I forgot that updating mod_phpX.Y requires me to update to phpX.Y-sqlite3. Quickly resolved, but.

Is there a way for me to specify local-only dependency changes in apt? As in, to say "I know that out in the world mod_PHP doesn't depend on php-sqlite3 but here on this computer, for reasons it definitely is?

As a sysadmin, community lead, tinkerer and occasional developer, this kind of thing leaves me incredibly envious:

We have no equivalent for this kind of conversation in computing, and I can feel its absence everywhere.

Moving from screen to tmux, this post was very helpful for bootstrapping the experience-tailoring process: https://hamvocke.com/blog/a-guide-to-customizing-your-tmux-conf/

After a quarter century in screen, remapping c-b as the magic prefix key back to c-a, where all my muscle memory wants it, was helpful and pleasant. So are the mouse menus, and the "list the URLs on the screen" function is a nice touch.

I feel like the four-day-workweek proposal lacks both ambition and seasonal nuance.

My proposal is this: "The 30 hour work week".

That is: Five shortened 6 hour days in the winter, when sunlight is scarce and we'd probably rather be indoors more often than not anyway, and four 7.5 hour days in the summer, when the sun gets us moving earlier and we'd rather have an extra full day outside.

"Once more let me remind you what fascism is. It need not wear a brown shirt or a green shirt. It may even wear a dress shirt. Fascism begins the moment a ruling class, fearing the people may use their political democracy to gain economic democracy, begins to destroy political democracy in order to retain its power and special privilege."

Genuinely embarassing that to share gdocs presentation in Google Meet I've gotta do a round trip through another browser window on my own hardware, but I guess that advocating for simple, useful things doesn't give anyone a reason to bark "AI" over and over again until they get promoted.

Prediction: All of the restrictions that get imposed on domain name traffic for security reasons - think of corporate security protocols that block recently registered domains, that kind of thing - those are going to be - and probably should be! - imposed for code dependencies soon.

That NPM package first registered in the last month? Yeah, don't touch that.

Gave a reasonably well received talk today at the IEEE conference on software testing and validation.

“If software is just an idea that we’ve turned into a machine, then validating the software is validating the idea” seemed to land like I’d hoped.

This is a remarkable graph.

You might have heard that "EV sales are slumping", "people are starting to avoid EVs", etc.

That's not what's happening.

What's happening is "Tesla is cratering so hard that it's skewing the aggregate market data."
