What even are the frontends other than Mastodon? I'm sticking with CI as my main instance for as long as it's up, but I'd been meaning to set up an instance for a project I've been working on anyway - if Masto's future is uncertain it seems unwise to go that route? But it's also the only one I'm familiar with >_>
@revengeday@mircoxi I mean, there's quite a few different applications that use AP as a base protocol - "front ends" as you called them. Off the top of my head, I can think of
Misskey/Calckey/Firefish/IceShrimp
Akkoma
Pleroma
Pixelfed
Bookwyrm
PeerTube
Some of them are applications that are built for a specific genre or type of content, but they can all talk to each other. Plus there's multiple forks of Mastodon (Home Town and glitch-soc, which we run on CI). And there's a few more that are out there as well.
I'm gonna dig out my old semi-finished spec for an AP alternative. I started it a couple years ago as a portfolio piece before depression hit (and getting mocked for writing it in Python and PHP instead of Rust and Go like the big boys), but I have a sudden urge to finish it
I already have test implementations for full account migration, "lifeboats" for when an instance needs to unexpectedly shut down (so folks can just carry on using it without losing anything on the instance they designated as second choice), and encryption between instances (as well as an E2E DM implementation I'm pretty sure I need to re-work)
The "official" Mastodon instance, whenever I look at it, seems to just be techbros* pretending to nominally care about decentralisation, but only insofar as they can shill their startup by saying it supports ActivityPub. With that in mind I'm not terribly surprised Mastodon has lived long enough to see itself become the villain, since it seems like none of them really interact with other instances either
(* techbros and people dipping their feet in who don't know about other instances yet, but those folks aren't at fault outside of maybe complaining that it's not exactly like Twitter)
While I wait for stuff to download, here's one for the Playstation fans - it's widely agreed that NTSC releases are better than PAL most of the time. Are there any PAL releases that are better than the NTSC version? PS1 and PS2.
So far I know about Ico for PS2 and Digimon World 2003 for PS1, but that's all so far.
@revengeday I've ended up setting up a business account and just saying I'm an invidual, and I think it works? I logged out and sent myself a little bit and the invoice doesn't have my RL name and address on it, but I'm not sure how it'd show up if someone donated through PayPal proper instead of a logged out card payment
I guess I'll just have to give up and hope for the best :blobfoxworried:
@revengeday Ha, absolutely! I've been told that I'm not allowed any more boxes by my family, and have decided that I'm going to completely ignore that in favour of doing something cool
I don't know if we still do intro posts in this day and age, but yolo.
I'm Jess, 29, Bri'ish, and I go by any pronouns (currently questioning - neutral is always safe, experimenting with she/her).
Amateur game dev, terrible web dev, studying for an MSc in CSec and Information Forensics, and WAY too into retro tech.
I'm relatively new to the Fediverse (I kinda gave up on it way back when Mastodon was first getting popular because of how bad the UX was at the time), so I'll still be figuring things out for a little bit while I look around.
