Apparently, live isn't available in the US. But that's okay. I'm team Jako (Armenia, I think) all the way, but I'm pretty sure she's not gonna make it.

I'll just catch the recap after the fact.

Lol. Wanted to remove some of my answers from and can't login suddenly.

A cew hours ago everything was fine. Password reset doesn't work.

I guess they'll do everything to keep the content for OpenAI. 💩

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@kaiserkiwi Be careful - I'm seeing reports of people that have attempted to remove their answers or even adding lines like "I do not consent to this content being indexed by AI" and not only having those edits/removals reset, but also having their accounts suspended by the moderators.

SO are being real dicks about this whole thing.

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@marta @kaiserkiwi I saw some mention of that as well, and the answers weren't quite clear. It has something to do with the fact that the SO TOS has carve-outs for the fact that any posts there become SO property in perpetuity, and that once an answer has been accepted, it would somehow "break the functionality of the site" (paraphrased).

I don't know any more than that, as I'm certainly no expert on copyright and privacy law in the US, much less the GDPR, but the way that the SO mods have been going after people attempting to either remove content or poison their "AI" data set suggests that they're going to go to the mat to put this to the test.

I guess we'll just have to wait and see how this pans out. I really do hope that it does violate the GDPR, so maybe that can help put a stop to this insanity.

Just as an example of just how bad my web design sense truly is, I've been agonizing for the last 2 hours about how best to display the following information on my digital garden notes:

  • published date
  • last updated date
  • status (how "complete" the note is)
  • read time

I've got last updated and read times in there, and it doesn't look bad. But I absolutely can't decide whether or not to put original publishing date in there, and whether to just use tags for the status versus a dedicated line of text. And, assuming that I want all that stuff actually in there, where would be the best place to put it and how it should be formatted.

The irony, of course, is that the whole point of a digital garden is to learn over time and have the site be fairly mutable as it (and I) grow.

This is why I should not be anywhere near a front-end. I can't even make the simplest decisions about information arrangement and layout of same.

:bec_sigh:

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@kaiserkiwi Thanks for the offer! I think I was able to finally come up with something that I'm happy with within the confines of the Quartz framework. I got all the dates on there that I wanted, and just decided to use multi-layer hashtags for the status (like status/PROTOTYPE) so that some of Quartz's tag features and search would work like I want.

Maybe later I'll devise some images or something to provide more of a visual signal about the status than just a hashtag.

But now that the offer of help is out there, I may take you up on that in the future! :bec_wink:

As a team effort between my toddler and my robot vacuum cleaner, I now have an injured foot. 😅

A toy building block was lying around and the robot vacuum cleaner pushed it against a connection ledge of the floor. I didn't see it because it's about the same colour as the floor and I ran into it at full speed.

It's bleeding and hurts like hell. Keep your fingers crossed that it's nothing serious. 🙃

German stand-up comedians be like: „Remember Corona? Toilet paper?!“

A hall filled with almost 25,000 people laughs and claps wildly as if it's the funniest thing in the world.

SynAck,

@revengeday Was that it? that's the whole joke? I mean, what's funny about that?

Now if it was accompanied by a photo of the comedian doing a duckface or the "Icy Hot Stuntaz" pose in front of a giant mountain of TP that they had hoarded, that might be pretty funny.

But mainly just sad.

My favorite privacy-related quotes from the movie Anon (which, if you haven't seen it, you absolutely should, like, right now):

The Girl: "It's not that I have something to hide. I have nothing I want you to see."

The Girl: "You invade my privacy, it's nothing. I try to get it back, it's a crime."

Josef Kenik (a cop): "We rely on transparency. We can't control what we can't see. We require persistent identity."

The Girl: "We close our eyes to pray, cry, kiss, dream....or break the law."

I need to get these on some t-shirts or something.

Being on the left side of the political spectrum is so exhausting.

It's not that you only fight nazis, capitalism and conservatives.

No you also have to fight with other left people.
People that think you're too left.
People that think you're not left enough.

Every time you say or do something there are mostly dissenting voices.

As I said. Exhausting.

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@kaiserkiwi Hmmmm, interesting. I've experienced this also.

Funny thing is, I grew up fundamentalist Christian conservative, so very right (although the right wasn't nearly as far right wack-a-doo like they are now), and this was the number one argument that Republicans had about Democrats over here in the US. They would always say that the Dems were bad because they wanted to "control your thoughts" and "tell you how to talk" and this is where the whole idea of "culture wars" stemmed from.

I'm no longer Republican nor conservative, but it's kind of interesting to see that the right wingers were actually kind of right on this front. The biggest enemy that the left actually has is itself in so many cases. If they could just agree with the same cohesiveness as the right does, they'd be a lot more formidable.

Whatever you want to say about Gen X, they really knew how to market themselves. 😆

SynAck,

@atomicpoet Who knew that not giving a shit about anything and slacking off would be such a great marketing tool?

I guess we did too good of a job because now we consistently get left out of generation charts and battles between "olds" and "youngs".

But that's okay, because reality bites. I'm gonna go watch TV.

mircoxi, to random
@mircoxi@corteximplant.com avatar

What even are the frontends other than Mastodon? I'm sticking with CI as my main instance for as long as it's up, but I'd been meaning to set up an instance for a project I've been working on anyway - if Masto's future is uncertain it seems unwise to go that route? But it's also the only one I'm familiar with >_>

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@revengeday @mircoxi I mean, there's quite a few different applications that use AP as a base protocol - "front ends" as you called them. Off the top of my head, I can think of

  • Misskey/Calckey/Firefish/IceShrimp
  • Akkoma
  • Pleroma
  • Pixelfed
  • Bookwyrm
  • PeerTube

Some of them are applications that are built for a specific genre or type of content, but they can all talk to each other. Plus there's multiple forks of Mastodon (Home Town and glitch-soc, which we run on CI). And there's a few more that are out there as well.

I still think Mastodon should have stories. I know this is an unpopular opinion here, but sometimes I wish to share something fleeting.

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@kaiserkiwi Pardon my ignorance here, but I've never messed with anything like stories. I always either immediately turned them off on other platforms or never used them in the first place.

What would stories add to mastodon that uploading video into a threaded toot doesn't allow? I'm curious to know what I might have been missing out on.

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@kaiserkiwi ah, okay. So kinda like the Snapchat way of doing things, or like Signal where you can post something and then it goes away after a while.

Gotcha.

So ideally in your mind, it would be something that you could set per toot instead of using the feature that deletes all your old posts of a certain age.

That makes sense to me. It could go right next to the ability to disable comments on a toot. Seems like a good safety and security feature, honestly. "Temporary Toots".

I'm looking forward to try these.

So many people say Buldak stuff is extremely hot but I was a bit disappointed from the sauce itself. Some people said the Ramen are much hotter.

Wish me luck. 😁

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@kaiserkiwi @chaotin Well, I hope that you get the same reaction we have. I'll be a little disappointed if you come back and say, "meh, it wasn't spicy enough."

I'll have to turn in my Super Spicy Food Consumer membership card if you do. :kekw:

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@chaotin @kaiserkiwi I guess I never posted the picture of the black one I had, did I? Oh well.

The other difference that may or may not come into play here is that I haven't had the straight ramen noodles that you boil in your own pot. Mine came in heat-n-eat bowls so that the water level and everything was (I guess) calibrated for maximum heat. I don't know if that makes any difference, but I just wanted to point that out.

(really, I'm just hedging my bets in case you can handle spicier food than me. :kekw: :kekw: :holdthepain:)

SynAck,
@SynAck@corteximplant.com avatar

@kaiserkiwi @chaotin Maybe you're one of those people who lacks capsaicin receptors - you'd be in good company, as Lorde is one of them. :holdthepain:

8,000 SHU (Scoville Heat Units) is roughly the equivalent of a fresh, uncooked, and un-pickled jalapeno. So if raw jalapenos don't do anything for you, the red 2X Heat Buldak might not either.

Now I'm super curious to see how it turns out! 🤔
