Roku just sent out an update that requires you to submit to arbitration in order to continue to use your device. You cannot (to my knowledge but I'm working on that) circumvent this. Unless you accept the terms, you will always be forced back to the same screen.

This is a device I PAID for and yet this is forcing me into terms I fundamentally disagree with. I should be allowed to return the device over things like this

mogul,
@mogul@mastodon.cloud avatar

@trebach I read Roku's updated terms forbidding you from participating in class action or bringing a lawsuit against the company, and which you can only "Accept" if you want to proceed with watching your TV.

Section 1L says that you can opt-out by writing via physical mail within 30 days, which I'll definitely be doing. Y'all should too.

Photo of section 1L of the updated Roku terms, which explain that to opt out of these new terms, one must mail Roku a physical letter within 30 days of accepting them. Photo of the start of the new Roku terms, presented on screen, in which say that by accepting them, you cannot bring a lawsuit or participate in a class action.

A FIPS-approved default crypto, in a memory-safe programming language, with an OpenSSL compatibility facade on the way!? This is a very exciting development and has huge potential to eliminate certain classes of risk and improve security across the board! I'm going to keep a close eye on this project...

“We are a Republican state — supermajority — in the House and Senate. I represent a constituency that doesn’t want that filth in Oklahoma. You know we are a religious state. We are going to fight and keep that filth out of the state of Oklahoma because we’re a Christian state."

This is what Oklahoma state Sen. Tom Woods said out loud, in a public forum, as a response to question about the state government's obsession with ending LGBTQ rights, specifically in the wake of the murder of a 16-year-old non-binary kid, Nex Benedict, after three bullies smashed that kid's heat against the floor of a high school bathroom, and also, not at all curiously, in the wake of revelations that state policy was being shaped with the counsel of hate-evangelizing online fascist Chaya Raichik.

Yeah, it gets fucking exhausting. But it needs to be said, especially when miserable loathsome fucks like Woods and Raichik show their asses for all to see, that the entirety of the Republican Party is a 100% malice-driven death cult, that THAT is their actual policy, and every Republican you know who might CLAIM to not agree with this venomous violent bile is full-throatedly allied with people who do and who are working diligently to encode this bigotry as law in every state they control. So, please remember, if you have any quibble with rational people calling these people fascists simply because they loudly bleat and work furiously to enact the tenets of fascism on the United States of America in the year 2024 CE, write it down on a post-it and shove it squarely up your ass.

There's no such thing as a "good person" who votes for murderous bullying garbage and blanket dehumanization of people for how they were born, and the notion that Americans have to fight Klan-esque chuds for basic civil rights all over again is exactly the price you pay for giving dogshit-stupid theocratic conservative fucking Brownshirts like Tom Woods power.

There’s a genre of person who can easily recognize the Holodomor as a genocide by the Soviet state against Ukrainians but will deny that the Israeli state’s starvation blockade of Gaza constitutes genocide.

There’s another genre of person who can easily recognize genocide in Gaza but will deny the Holodomor.

In reality, these two genres are just cheering squads for different states—people who have chosen to recognize or deny genocide based on the national identity of the perpetrators. To them, the world is a team sport and what really matters is whether their favored team is scoring points or not.

After listening to the OTM episode below, I've been reflecting on the profusion of LLM-generated garbage on the internet today, how much worse it's going to get, and the resulting effect on search, which has already gotten pretty terrible. And I think the episode, so preoccupied with how LLMs will wreck already-struggling media and the public's grasp on reality, missed something kind of critical... and I'm going to make a hot-take prediction. 1/

https://www.wnycstudios.org/podcasts/otm/episodes/on-the-media-if-you-cant-beat-them-join-them-ai-in-journalism

mogul,
@mogul@mastodon.cloud avatar

We have been on a long and seemingly inevitable slide down a slope of "why would I pay for/look at one source for [thing] when the Internet can give me that for free?" And the [thing] I'm mainly thinking about it is "accurate, up to date information". I'm certainly an infovore and an early adopter of all that the internet affords, greedily gobbling up feeds and constantly refreshing social media in a futile attempt to sate my inescapable need to know. 2/

mogul,
@mogul@mastodon.cloud avatar

My helpless addiction to Google News is, I think, exemplary of what will happen. It summarizes across tons of sources and you can click an icon to see the different ways a story it surfaces is covered. But lately it is serving up tons of "Top X things about Y, ranked by Z" articles. Just the worst LLM-generated clickbait imaginable. These are Ys that I'm otherwise intensely interested in, and I won't click through. And there's no way to say "never show me something that starts with "Top X..." 3/

mogul,
@mogul@mastodon.cloud avatar

You might reasonably predict that this model, which has gone from summarizing new, relevant stuff from reputable sources to endlessly emitting a sludge of masticated grey pulp, infused with conspiracy theories infused with artificial life, would destroy any hope of anyone ever seeing an original source again, and drive them out. But I think that sells us all short, because it doesn't reflect how we adopted the Internet in the first place, and doesn't look far enough ahead. 4/

mogul,
@mogul@mastodon.cloud avatar

Because if the Internet is no longer useful, if the free summary of the accumulated content at the end of a search or top of a feed is no longer a source of fresh water, just raw sewage, I think after enough time, we will stop drinking. The Internet as a whole will become the "National Inquirer" of information, something you ridicule other people for consuming. Something they do guiltily, knowing they are licking the bottom of the barrel not caring that they eating something bad for them. 5/

Been trying this out secretly for the past few weeks — a "catch-up" timeline page. Did whole bunch of iterations, where I myself is the guinea pig, but this time reaching a point where I just got to share it out in the public.

  • NOT final design, still very experimental, only on my local machine
  • Instead of algo timeline, this is focused on data-grid-like UI for configuring exactly what I want to see.
  • This honestly could be another full-fledged app/client by itself 🫠

Demo of Catch-up page where it shows the Home/Following timeline with configurable filters and sort options.

mogul,
@mogul@mastodon.cloud avatar

@cheeaun I love how this is shaping up, and group by author does feel more feed-reader-y. I like this idea of also tuning my Follows by who's noisiest, etc.

But! I have been yearning for a way to group posts that all reference the same link. As in "this link is getting a lot of traction among my Follows, and I just want to see what they're all saying about it at once". I don't know if that fits in with the Catch-up concept, or would be better as a thing all by itself.

mogul,
@mogul@mastodon.cloud avatar

@cheeaun Ooooh, I just saw the "top links" bar at the top! I like it, but again... I want to see what my Follows are saying about it when they share it.

HIVE MIND and also maybe BRITISH HIVE MIND, here is what I need, should you have any faves to proffer:

Obscure but hilarious British tv comedies that lasted 1-3 seasons and nobody could be bothered to pick them up for streaming except some dank corner of the streaming universe, like Roku Channel or whatev.

CRITERIA:

  • preferably TVMA or 16+
  • No laugh-tracks (this disqualifies most shows from being good and, frankly, is distracting and archaic and condescending as fuck)
  • not super-popular (basically if it's like Fleabag or Green Wing and on a mainstream streaming service and internationally recognized as brilliant, I will pretty likely have seen it
  • made roughly 2008ish to present
  • has NOTHING WHATSOEVER to do with Ricky Gervais
  • narrative storytelling e.g. NOT faux-documentary

As some guidance, here are shows of the ilk I am in the market for (and thus have already seen [AND RECOMMEND]):

Plebs
Bluestone 42
Crazyhead
Porters
London Irish
Toast of London
Zomboat
Cockroaches
Fresh Meat
White Van Man
Time Wasters
Back
Upstart Crow
Sirens
Raised by Wolves
Detectorists
The Bleak Old Shop of Stuff

Any suggestions welcome and thank you! 🍻
