German towns have lent their names to two of my rose bushes: Rostock and Uetersen.

@mrundkvist Evening from Skara! I can’t help but notice your Kobo. Are you happy with it? I’ve been looking at ink-devices for a while

mrundkvist,
@mrundkvist@archaeo.social avatar

@Qwaint The Kobo is great! Big beefy online bookstore. And you can config it to turn off entirely after an interval, which makes it slow to start but preserves battery like the Kindle doesn't to my knowledge. I have both.

mrundkvist, to academia
@mrundkvist@archaeo.social avatar

Apparently one of the most common uses of LLMs in #academia is copy editing: cleaning up your #writing on points of spelling, grammar and style. This is wildly unattractive to me. I love writing. My personal style, my personal voice, are extremely high priorities to me. It annoys me no end when a journal editor replaces one of my unconventional style choices with something bland. If an editor ran a paper of mine through an #LLM I would scream bloody murder.

@mrundkvist I agree, but every spell-scheck, every grammar-check etc in Microsoft Word is a result of AI. I would like to find a word-processor that does NOT use AI at all.

mrundkvist,
@mrundkvist@archaeo.social avatar

@ArchaeoIain Sounds like crazy overkill to use that technology for a simple spell check. I use LibreOffice under Ubuntu Linux myself.

The Monday night Irish trad session at Wirström's pub is one of Stockholm's finest musical events, and very long-lived too. For the price of a glass of Sprite you get to hear great live music while sitting crammed in with the music in a 17th century vaulted cellar!

On a populous colonised Mars in 2059, there are still video rental stores. K.S. Robinson's novel "Red Mars" appeared in 1993, two years before I got dial-up #internet access at home.

@metin @mrundkvist Video? Really? Magnetic tape is hardly a suitable medium for the preservation of films

@edgeofeurope @mrundkvist There's a beauty in that. Analog, organic, finite… 😉

Other cities have urban foxes and boars. occasionally has elks in the streets. In my suburb I've often got fallow deer on the lawn outside the kitchen window.

If you want to grow , don't even bother with the whole water and fertiliser thing. Just move to a town with Medieval culture layers, lift a few street cobbles, poke a plant in, and you're done.

So weird that I'm 52 now and have no understanding of how young people have fun. Feels like yesterday when I was 22 and had no understanding of how young people had fun!

At a banquet in the late 1980s, a delegation from the #Visby #Tolkien Society gave the ivy on St. Olaf's ruin to the Stockholm Tolkien Society as a diplomatic gift. I am pleased to report to all my fellow Stockholm Tolkienians that our ivy is doing well.

Despite the serious subject, I can't help but find this funny. Look at this corner of Lärbro churchyard's little Jewish quarter, surrounded by a low shrubbery. It was originally rectangular. But then the parish discovered that the death camp victim they had buried second from the end was a Gentile with an Italian name. 1/2

mrundkvist,
@mrundkvist@archaeo.social avatar

They swapped his Jewish headstone for a cross and added a little loop of shrubbery. Technically this Catholic now rests outside the Jewish quarter, though both of his neighbours are Jews. ♥️ 2/2
