nileane,
@nileane@nileane.fr avatar

I'm still not sure if this gets it across well, but this is what I see out the window at work (Chicago area). It's still so smoky out there.

@matt Skies were still a bit hazy today in France. It's mind boggling to me that we’re being affected by the same wildfires on both sides of the Atlantic

I’m struggling to capture impactful photos of it, but the Chicago area is getting hit harder than I’ve ever seen in my life with the smoke from Canada’s wildfires. Gonna try and take some pics this evening since sunset seems to be when you can get the most dramatic photos.

@matt Can you believe me if I tell you that today most of France has hazy skies because of the Canada wildfires? (https://twitter.com/MeteoExpress/status/1673575525389041670)

I woke up today wondering why the light outside seemed so... off

it's a day that ends in "y" so it's a day with a new Keychron keyboard release, and I absolutely refuse to believe this layout is good for anyone. Refuse, I say!

My personal crusade against the "minimized keyboard accessory" control for iPadOS continues.

Today's example: I wanted to create a new folder in the Notes app, but I couldn't because that thing was covering the button. 😡

Alright, my Mastodon CSS tweaks are live on GitHub :) https://github.com/nileane/Mastodon-PeachyTweaks

Available in 2 color variants for now : Lemon 🍋 and Peach 🍑

Tweaks so far include :

  • Set a custom accent color
  • Hide several redundant UI elements
  • Trim down the UI for logged-out visitors
  • Tweaks to profile fields (no 'Joined' field, less obnoxious verified fields)
  • Little fancy things here and there (ie. backdrop blur on headers)
  • The bits of CSS that support my custom About page (https://nileane.fr/about)

Screenshot featuring my tweak to the verified links fields on profile pages
Screenshot showcasing the backdrop blur on column headers
Screenshot showcasing the main UI on the home timeline with the custom accent color

Tried to use two different Parisian taxi companies to get to the airport (it’s raining and we’re in a bit of a bind) and now I see why Uber is so successful.

nileane,
@nileane@nileane.fr avatar

@mergesort I've just never used a taxi in Paris. They have such a bad reputation that I don't know anyone who even tries nowadays.

Listen, I’m not even hard in favor of preemptively blocking Meta’s Project92. But it’s quite telling that @gruber (and others who strongly argue for not doing so) will spend entire blog posts discussing growth opportunities and openness without spending too much time on how incredibly dangerous Facebook has been for marginalized people in the world.

Why would you dismiss that in the name of growth opportunity? Why wouldn’t we like to take a safer approach this time?

https://daringfireball.net/2023/06/more_on_preemptively_blocking

nileane,
@nileane@nileane.fr avatar

I mean, it is no secret that hate speech and far right conservatism have been thriving on Meta’s platforms, and it’s absolutely no secret either that POC and LGBT communities have been very vocal about their valid concerns in this debate. I would even argue that these concerns are central to this discussion.

So this makes me wonder: are you deliberately ignoring them?

If you are not, perhaps it’s time to remember about Allyship lesson N°1: start listening.

@gruber

Contrary to what some think, wishing success for the Fediverse is compatible with keeping the big bullies out the door.

I'm not saying it's necessarily the right approach, I'm not saying chaos will ensue for sure if we let Meta in. I'm saying: it is possible to seek success without having to keep giving the benefit of the doubt to known oppressors.
