nix,

Oh I see. I took your first sentence as meaning you stopped a paragraph in.

I agree that buses are less efficient, I think it’s the best argument for rail.

I will point out, all of St. Louis’ new buses are electric.

nix,

I suggest you read a little farther. They’re arguing in favor of spending the money on buses instead. It’s a train vs bus article.

If Chromebooks are anything to go by, if google had their way you’d only be allowed to search prescreened questions they think are best for you. Can’t have you experiencing anything not advertiser friendly.

nix,

It works about the same as any other app’s group invite link. It can be set to automatically add the person or be treated as a request to join that needs approval.

nix,

Thanks for the detailed reply. Signal does have location sharing and invite links, FWIW.

nix,

What polish and features is signal missing?

nix,

Good thoughts. Did you follow the link to thread that was the tipping point for the blog author? The thread creator was very rude (according to, due to his own mental health situation). We all have different levels of tolerance and patience, but I can totally see why the blog author would be fed up after such a comment, if things were already stressful.

nix,

It had a leak a few years back. Not a huge one, but it’d add up on devices that had a ton of tabs or were always on.

nix,

Anyone using a work or school Chromebook is, actually.

nix,

I’ve heard good things, I’ll wishlist it and grab it in a good sale sometime!

Adding license after some time with no license?

I have previously written a lot of code that is hosted on a public repo on GitHub, but it never had a license. It was written as part of my work while working for a non-commercial academic entity, and I would like to add a license before the link to the repo will be included in something that will be made public, potentially...

nix,

Also not a lawyer, but you can also grant exceptions to the license (if you’re the sole owner of the code), so you can license code one way and let a certain org use it another way.

Which is essentially already what’s happening. The default “license” of something is that you have full ownership and no rights are given to anyone else. You’ve essentially give your company an exception to use it for that project.

nix,

My trick is to choose 3 options, tell them to pick 2 of those, then I pick from those 2.

nix,

Been trying to think of a term for this issue. It’s not quite chicken or egg. But both sides need the other side to incentivize them. If one gets going the other will follow, but they’re waiting for each other. Like some sort of collaborative standoff.

nix,

If you’re interested, there’s a protest for this tomorrow: www.facebook.com/events/896634694988780/

Middle-aged and some what tongue tied (medical condition) anyone else in this situation, and go through with the procedure?

I’m a middle aged guy, who, a few years ago, was off handedly told by a dental hygienist while getting my teeth cleaned, that I was tongue tied. I’ve had a flap of skin under my tongue which holds it down, it isn’t severe, but it does restrict my tongues mobility. For instance, I can’t really stick my tongue out very far...

nix,

Ah I see. Those do seem like issues it could improve. Hope whatever you decide works out well for you.

nix,

Wow, what a tragic mess. Sounds like corporate greed at the root of it. Hope all the displaced people get sorted out. I worry about those that might not have much family…

nix,

Max is a pseudo-mythological figure. It’s never clear in the movies how much time has passed. Word of writers says that he’s multiple people retold as one person in retrospective story, but the movies don’t show that so you can take or leave it. The game has him as an immortal doomed soul.

Whatever is the case, I think it’s pretty clear we’re not supposed to take the story we’re told about Max via the movies as told completely faithfully.

Not at all. I use a tiling WM, and most of my time is spent in text editors or a browser. I just like having everything visible and spaced out automatically for me.

I think tiling WMs just have a lot of overlap with the terminal-heavy crowd. They tend to require some manual set up, and they tend to be very keyboard shortcut heavy. Both things also popular with people that tend to like using terminals.

Also keep in mind most screenshots advertising someone’s set up are to show off, not their regular workflow. It’s like looking at someone’s professional head-shots and wondering if they usually dress like that.

nix,

Not sure if any exist. Recharging by pedal would require adding resistance to the pedaling. The added resistance is fine in a car because they’re so heavy and fast that it’s barely noticeable downhill. But it’d be very noticeable to someone on a bike.

nix,

When you say “safer” can you elaborate on in what sense you mean?

nix,

I think it’s fair to say that secure ways to communicate have largely scaled with our social circles. Without writing you can’t keep in touch at a distance anyway.

nix,

It can’t be ruled out from that picture.

nix,

Absolutely! The easiest way to not throw things away is to just have less things to throw away to begins with.

nix,

Are XMPP or Matrix really any more seachable? I’m all in on FOSS, clearly, but do they fix that complaint? I feel like the real solution is separating chat and longer term info, and putting the longer term info on a wiki or other public and indexable format.

nix,

What do you think is missing/has changed?
